Is this acceptable acceptable supermarket behaviour?

Nipped to the local supermarket for a few bit (yes I mean wine)

Bloke in front of me at the checkout has 3 loose green peppers, lovely assistant on the till looks bemused and says they don't sell loose peppers - only in packs if 3. Bloke responds that packs have red, yellow and green peppers and he only wants green do he's opened 3 packs and taken the green ones.

Lovely checkout assistant says cannot scan them - bloke then gets the opened empty packaging from his pocket and tells her to can barcode!

Is it me or is this totally bonkers?

Would you do this?

Did she scan the barcode and let him have them? I’ve sort of done this with limes. Empty crates where the loose limes normally are and only wanting one I’ve ripped open a netted bag of multiple limes just to get the one I want. I’ve seen others snap the stalks off broccoli where you’re paying by weight.

It’s not so unusual that small stores only sell prepackaged vegetables.

It’s not acceptable to open them to get the ones he wants. If he wasn’t to select the colours then he should go to a store that sells them loose.

Would it be ok if someone opened the Haribo to get the ones they wanted?

Individually wrapped haribo in an easily countable number like a pack of three, and taking the least popular variety so you'd easily find a happy buyer for the others?

@AuroraForever
I've done the same where there are no loose items left

TinklingToadstools · 25/11/2023 21:04

You can see why supermarkets are pushing the online side of their business, Customers pick up fruit and veg, squeeze it, bruise it, drop it on floor, start eating it, then put it back, same with bakery items it's disgusting.

I never actually noticed a difference in flavour between the colours. Is there meant to be a difference 🤔

There is a difference, yes.

Seriously? You think a red pepper tastes the same as a green? They are picked at different stages of ripeness. Green is bitter. Red is sweet.

rwalker · 25/11/2023 19:56

He was being a twat you wouldn’t open 3 multi packs of crisps because you wanted 6 packs of salt and vinegar

they should of charged him for 3 lots of 3 peppers

This. Even though I would be happy to bag 3 reds.

Maybe he is in the elimination phase of the Low FODMAP diet? It is an infuriating diet and I remember when I did it I was only allowed green peppers and not red, yellow or orange ones. If that's the case then he is probably peed off with the diet and taking his frustration out on the shop assistant.

Only those cursed with IBS would understand.

Umm, nope. I have ibs and have had to do the low FODMAP diet. I never used it as an excuse to essentially damage supermarket property.

He was being unreasonable. Who even likes green peppers.

YABU Green peppers are the best

1vandal2 · 25/11/2023 21:15

There is a reason supermarkets don't just rip open multi packs when they run out and it's to do with possible different country of origins, dates and stock control. No multi packs will come in to replace them if they aren't sold as multipacks and cause shrink which causes prices to go up on other goods... Not to mention it is criminal damage.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2023 21:19

@SweetFemaleAttitude I just chop peppers up and bung them in mixed into whatever I am cooking - so that's why I have never really noticed a difference.
I might do a taste test one day 🙂

coldcallerbaiter · 25/11/2023 21:22

He has damaged their goods and left the other peppers to go to waste on the shelf. He should be charged for each pack. Of course nothing will get done for the criminal behaviour but they should at least refuse to serve him.

clary · 25/11/2023 21:28

Not the point but who would want three green peppers? No no not ever

but yy not Ok by the pepper man.

MidnightOnceMore · 25/11/2023 21:28

People are amazing! I guess the assistant didn't know what to do.

Pipistrellus · 25/11/2023 21:29

coldcallerbaiter · 25/11/2023 21:23

Really?

The alternative would be that they would lose a customer if there are multiple gaps on the shelves. I'd go elsewhere for at least a few weeks, there's no point if they don't have what I need. Or, I open a pack of sweet potatoes, take one, put the rest in the empty loose section for someone else.

This! Green peppers are the worst out of the four pepper colours!

I was thinking of the big mixed bags. Pick out all the ones I want and leave the bag open.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/11/2023 21:31

I've never understood why you can't take a couple of cans or bottles out of a six-pack in the UK, the way you can in other countries.

Not really comparable to packs of three

DaisyDoor · 25/11/2023 21:33

I might start opening boxes of chocolates and taking out all the violet creams.

WhatYouWearing · 25/11/2023 21:33

So if pies come in a box of two and you've got three people for dinner it's okay to open half a packet? He was just being a twat. Wonder what he expected her to scan initially.

HaveYouTriedListening · 25/11/2023 21:35

Correct

BooBooBaloo · 25/11/2023 21:35

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/11/2023 19:49

I think it’s weird the store doesn’t sell loose peppers. The guy is supposed to by 3x the amount of peppers than he needs to get the ones he wants.

Yes, or go to a shop that actually sells loose peppers. It's not like they can sell the other 6 peppers from those opened packs now is it?

MadeOfAllWork · 25/11/2023 21:35

Pipistrellus · 25/11/2023 21:32

It doesn’t really matter. You can’t open a packet of anything just to pick out the ones you want.
