Is this acceptable acceptable supermarket behaviour?

Nipped to the local supermarket for a few bit (yes I mean wine)

Bloke in front of me at the checkout has 3 loose green peppers, lovely assistant on the till looks bemused and says they don't sell loose peppers - only in packs if 3. Bloke responds that packs have red, yellow and green peppers and he only wants green do he's opened 3 packs and taken the green ones.

Lovely checkout assistant says cannot scan them - bloke then gets the opened empty packaging from his pocket and tells her to can barcode!

Is it me or is this totally bonkers?

Would you do this?

Yes, or go to a shop that actually sells loose peppers. It's not like they can sell the other 6 peppers from those opened packs now is it?

I'd happily buy a pack of yellow/red with no green. Others have said they would also.

He was being unreasonable. Who even likes green peppers.

So true 🤣

Pipistrellus · 25/11/2023 21:39

What happened to shops reducing unnecessary plastic packaging?

Differentstarts · 25/11/2023 21:43

He's an arsehole let me guess he was about 50 years old. Purposely picked a young female checkout operator to go to and was hoping for it to be an argument so he could shout at her for 10 minutes about how she should sell loose fruit and veg.

HanSB · 25/11/2023 21:52

Why is loose not the main option anymore, why does everything need to be pre-packaged? It's pretty silly that he opened the packets up but I can understand his frustration (though green are the worst colour of peppers)

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 25/11/2023 21:52

I wouldn't do it.

coveredindoghairs · 25/11/2023 21:53

No, that's not remotely acceptable. You can't just go unpackaging things and taking out what you want, when things are packed and marked for sale as a group.

I hope she didn't let him get away with that nonsense!

Hecate01 · 25/11/2023 21:57

And this kind of behaviour is why we pay more for our food. It's one of the reasons I quit retail, unfortunately this entitled behaviour is more common than people realise.

I think it’s weird the store doesn’t sell loose peppers. The guy is supposed to by 3x the amount of peppers than he needs to get the ones he wants.

That's not weird at all. Lots of small Co-Op style "local" supermarkets have limited ranges of that sort of thing. I know that my local Co-Op doesn't sell loose fruit and veg at all, it's all pre-packed.

Of course it's not acceptable, and I can just imagine the cashier's bemused face.

Wrongsideofpennines · 25/11/2023 22:03

What a plank. You just don't do this. There are plenty of times you might have to buy something you don't want to get something you do. Multipacks of yoghurt, crisps, coffee Minstrels, the Bounty in Celebrations.

RudsyFarmer · 25/11/2023 22:06

So what happened in the end?

I'd love to take the bountys out of one pack and refill it with the Malteser ones from the other pack that would be amazing 😍 but I'm not a thief or an asshole

So what happened in the end?

I would imagine she sold them to him to keep the peace and 6 perfectly good peppers got thrown away

OnionOnionH · 25/11/2023 22:12

I think you should be able to buy loose fruit and veg, irrespective of the shop size. Packaged just encourages food waste.

MadeOfAllWork · 25/11/2023 22:12

I some countries it is acceptable to separate multi packs of things like beer or water. I’ve seen it in Greece and Germany.

The Bounties are the best ones.

The Bounties are the best ones.

I don't mind them at all. But the galaxy truffles were the absolute best.

MadeOfAllWork · 25/11/2023 22:26

I might go in and open a tub of Celebrations and take out all the Malteaser. It’s clearly fine as some people don’t like them.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 25/11/2023 22:31

And did she scan it?

This is part of the problem though. If this is a small store that doesn’t sell loose veg then they might not be able to put single items through the till.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2023 19:53

I never actually noticed a difference in flavour between the colours. Is there meant to be a difference 🤔

Yes they range in bitter to sweet.

wannabetraveler · 25/11/2023 22:51

I only learned recently that the peppers are different colored because they're picked at different levels of ripeness. So if a red pepper were picked much earlier it would be green.

mind blown.

Holidayhell22 · 25/11/2023 22:53

Another one here who would take the yellow ones.
In fact I really like orange too.

mathanxiety · 25/11/2023 22:58

I think this was fine.

Supermarkets that package peppers like that are annoying. It's stupid to make customers feel they're being forced to buy food they don't need in order to get food they do need.

I don't buy veg in my local Aldi because they package it all.
