All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

Is this a serious post? You haven’t worn enough clothes outside and are now cold and wondering what to do?

The lack of common sense is astounding isn't it.

Ivyiris · 26/11/2023 18:21

I was like this for ages yesterday as had been out for ages. Took me ages to heat up

Ivyiris · 26/11/2023 18:23

Should add I was dressed in warm clothing just struggled to heat up

Ineke · 26/11/2023 18:24

Have a hot bath if you can, if not stand with legs slightly apart and swing your arms by twisting one way and then the other, this will get the blood flowing through to your fingertips. Then cover up under a blanket with a hot water battle

mynewusername2023 · 26/11/2023 18:35

Just be careful having a hot shower or bath. I was sat in freezing and windy weather for a few hours and had a hot shower to warm myself up when I got home and it caused windburn. Had to spend a few hours with savlon all over my legs to try and heal it as we're on holiday. It was the wind that was the killer.

For anyone still invested in this thread I can confirm I am now back to normal.

I’d be spending less time on mumsnet and putting on every item of clothing I owned. 🤣

Good 🥰

Sennelier1 · 26/11/2023 18:41

What I need when I am totally cold through to the bone is not only an extra blanket but also extra weight on me. So then I put a heavy quilt on the bed, on top of the usual bedding. It works for me, as if the weight closes in on me to allow my body to warm up. Maybe worth a try?

pollymere · 26/11/2023 18:49

Sounds like you caught a chill 😞. FYI, I went to the shops yesterday wearing a vest, long sleeve top, cardigan, thick coat, boots, snood and woolly hat... You do need to wrap up warm and take care when it gets cold. I had a warm drink under a blanket with a hot water bottle when I got back too!

Have you bought socks, though?

It truly is astounding, and also slightly worrying. People saying OP might be ill because she got cold - bizarre.
Stop Press - going outside in cold weather with light clothes on makes you feel…….cold!! Who knew?!!!

What is a “chill” exactly?

3luckystars · 26/11/2023 19:10

Good. Wear a hat the next time it really helps.

LimePi · 26/11/2023 19:11

I used to live in pretty cold country and this was pretty stupid thing to do.
you need a hot bath or a very long hot shower, and hot cups of tea

Blueskiesforecast · 26/11/2023 19:23

As others have said, hot bath is the only way. Sauna also works if near a gym!**

Sillyname63 · 26/11/2023 19:31

As your Gran would have said " you'll pay for that when you are older"😂
Lesson learnt hopefully, leave a coat /thick cardigan in the car.
Hopefully you are feeling better / warmer today.

Xmasbaby11 · 26/11/2023 19:42

This happens to me these days (I'm 47) - I put it down to my underactive thyroid as I don't regulate myself well. I find if I get very cold it takes time to warm up and feel comfortable. I have learnt this the hard way - if I am already cold, it can take me an hour to warm up in bed even with all the layers and a heated throw. I really have to make sure I stay warm and don't let myself get that cold. It's really weird as I never used to be like this and would be too embarrassed to tell anyone!

lilkitten · 26/11/2023 19:45

I work outside sometimes, I do forget to layer up as much as I could on the legs. I worked on Friday evening, I would describe it as feeling like I was cold to the bone. I was on the sofa in a quilt afterwards, went to bed in extra layers, it took until morning for me to get properly warmed up again

HowNice23 · 26/11/2023 19:58

I got this cold once. I genuinely think my bones got cold and it took a very hot bath and a good few hours to try to infuse some heat back in!

MrsMarzetti · 26/11/2023 20:31

Glad to hear you are back to normal. Hope you have put a coat in the car and bought some socks.

Ok your refusal to explain how and why you don’t own socks is making me think this is a wind up.

@queenmeadhbh ive just never worn them. They are dirty… I hate the idea of them going in the washing machine! That said, i did buy a pair today just for bedtime only!
