All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

Gosh. I mean to each their own but that seems dirtier to me than socks - all that sweat in your trainers!

anyway if I went out in the cold with no coat and no socks I would definitely get chilled to my bones like you did. Glad you’re feeling better now.

Imagwine · 26/11/2023 21:31

How can socks be dirtier than manky sweaty shoes? At least socks can be washed.

Hercisback · 26/11/2023 21:40

How are socks dirtier than sweaty trainers? That makes no sense.
No wonder you're freezing!

In future, beds aren't that good for warming up in, you need to get active.

LaDamaDeElche · 26/11/2023 21:40

Glad to hear you’ve warned up OP. Obviously you got a bit cold. For the people who don’t understand viruses on this thread - the OP can’t get sick by getting cold, she can just feel cold. You’re all a bit out of touch with the old wives tales.

Draculasteachest · 25/11/2023 14:55

I'm West of London and it turned very cold here, yesterday. I bet a lot of the country is the same.
Didn't a study a few years ago show that getting cold and or/wet for a prolonged period can sort of activate respiratory viruses that you may be carrying?
Hope you feel better soon.

@Draculasteachest

I'm pretty sure research doesn't include 15 minutes total nipping between shops/the car etc in the 'prolongued' group!!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/11/2023 21:41

That's nuts! The point of a washing machine is to make things clean. So the socks are clean and your trainers stay cleaner, because they have clean docks between your feet and them. Do you also go commando because you don't like the idea of your knickers going in the washing machine?! Same logic!

HurkleDurkling · 26/11/2023 21:42

Lots of hot drinks and soup. If you don’t have a bath, soak your feet in a basin of hot water. Get to a bed asap wear a hat or scarf and socks. ( you’ll not look good but it will keep you warmer. Take a paracetamol. If needed put Vick on your feet. Get a good sleep. You’ll be fine.

GwenGhost · 26/11/2023 13:34

How do you think people get hypothermia? Being inappropriately dressed for the environment you are in in pretty much exactly how most cases happen. Hypothermia just means your core body temperature has got too low. You don’t need to be outdoors naked in the sub zero temperatures for it to happen to you.

@GwenGhost

no, but you're not going to get hypothermia nipping been warm shops for 15 mins.

you might get a bit cold, but meh.

It's the best place to get active!!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 26/11/2023 21:52

@187s your logic is messed up.

socks are dirty. socks goong in the washing machine is eww.

but trainers being worn barefoot is fine.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

being cold for 15 minutes isn't going to Do anything except make you feel cold.

as you can see you'll warm up again & life moves on.

HungryandIknowit · 26/11/2023 21:54

Trainers and no socks. YABU

JustJoinedRightNow · 26/11/2023 22:15

🤮 trainers and no socks

RampantIvy · 26/11/2023 22:22

They are dirty… I hate the idea of them going in the washing machine! That said, i did buy a pair today just for bedtime only!

Your reasoning is flawed. Do you wash your sweaty trainers after every wear like you would a pair of socks or knickers?

Your trainers would be cleaner if you wore socks.

Stop being so silly.

HeWhoMustNotBeNamed · 26/11/2023 22:38

Sorry OP but I need to add to the cacophony of people weirded out by your lack of socks. I'm just imagining you going to visit friends and taking your bare feet out of your trainers that have been sweated in and never washed 🤢

How on earth is that cleaner than washing your socks?

It was -1. I’m not really one for wearing layers so this has really surprised me.

@WrongSwanson no bath but have tried lots of hot drinks and it’s not making a difference

Long, very warm soak. Lie there and read a bit. You've not done permanent damage, but you do need to give your poor nervous system time to recover, and get the blood flowing up near the surface of your body again.

mathanxiety · 27/11/2023 01:21

187s · 26/11/2023 21:14

@queenmeadhbh ive just never worn them. They are dirty… I hate the idea of them going in the washing machine! That said, i did buy a pair today just for bedtime only!

What do you put in your washing machine then?

Clothes that are clean already?

The point of socks is to cushion your feet, keep them warm in cold weather, save your footwear from sweat and foot odour, and save your feet from bacteria in your footwear.

You wear them and then put them in the washing machine. Detergent and water restore them to cleanliness.

Ukrainebaby23 · 27/11/2023 05:46

TheChippendenSpook · 25/11/2023 14:24

If I'm that cold, I have to get completely changed. It's weird but it like the cold air gets trapped in what I'm wearing.

Yes, totally agree, change clothing not just put warm stuff on top. No idea why, but its the only way.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/11/2023 08:09

"I don't own socks because they make the washing machine dirty" is quite possibly one of the maddest things I have ever read on Mumsnet.

Mr Monkey is a regular distance runner and this time of year our washing machine fills up with wet and muddy running socks. So far we have no suffered any ill effects of dirty things being put in a machine whose whole purpose is to clean things.

Packetofcrispsplease · 27/11/2023 09:32

Oh dear 😅 check your temperature in case you’re coming down with some virus .
Have a bowl of soup , that will heat you up and put on some layers and thick socks .
The other week here it was mild weather probably 11 or 12c so I went out in thick cotton dress , tights , boots and chunky cardigan .
No coat , I was only going from car into supermarket.
I wouldn’t venture out without coat otherwise .

Packetofcrispsplease · 27/11/2023 09:35

littleblackcat27 · 25/11/2023 15:43

I’m loving all the tips on how to get warm - especially the weird ginger one!

The OP has not even said she’s put an extra jumper on when she got back.!?!

Ginger 🫚 tea instantly warms me up !
In fact I wouldn’t drink it on a mild / warm day or in an over heated house .
id flush tomato red 🤣

toxic44 · 27/11/2023 10:21

Move around, as in swinging your arms, jogging on the spot. Put on hat and gloves. Hot drinks. Rub your arms and legs to stimulate the circulation. You don't get warm by sitting still.

RavenhairedRachel · 27/11/2023 11:38

I doubt you will die from hypothermia. We went out to a Christmas Market on Saturday which was cold we went in a few pubs afterwards and judging by the young women in skimpy dresses and strappy sandals they didn't look worried.
