All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

Have a hot shower 🤷‍♀️

Do not do this!

Had shower, food, drink, heating on, in bed.

Still cold

You need a really long hot shower until you feel warmed through. Then you need a hot water bottle in bed. If not a gas or electric fire near you would do. Some brandy would help.

I’ve pulled my mum out of hypothermia twice, it does work.

Mirabai · 25/11/2023 21:02

Not if you’ve been out and got chilled. That’s the cause.

But she can't get warm again, hours later. That's concerning.

KateLawsonDidIt · 25/11/2023 21:04

There's some daft shit on MN tonight !!

No not really, I think she just hasn’t been in the shower long enough. You have to stay in until you can feel you’re warmed up. And then you need a hottie. If anything she may have a thyroid issue.

Unless she has an infection of some kind she’s not likely to have sepsis.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 25/11/2023 21:07

Do the hoovering/dance around your house. Exercise is the only thing that genuinely truly warms me up. If I hide under blankets etc with cold feet Ill still have cold feet hours later. Movement works much more efficiently.

Lex345 · 25/11/2023 21:10

You cannot "catch" sepsis. Sepsis is a disregulated, extreme response of the body to infection. Rigors (shaking/shivering) can happen in sepsis, or in the case of infection, due to hyperthermia ie too hot.

A bath would have been better as water typically takes heat away from the body-you would need to submerge in a temperature around normal body temp to add/maintain heat.

Add layers paying particular attention to the areas we lose heat from quickest-head, under arms, feet and groin.

That being said, this has been going on a while now for the length of time it seems you were out poorly dressed but not completely exposed in barely sub zero temps.

If you are layered up hours later and still feeling extremely cold, it may be worth calling 111 for advice.

Siha345 · 25/11/2023 21:14

I’ve always thought that you can’t get ill from being cold, you need bacteria or a virus. However an ex boyfriend had a job where he would sometimes have to go in and out all day and it was apparently well known among them all that that’s when you get ill 🤷‍♀️

Have you had a big hot dinner? You will need fuel to keep you warm. Have you tried moving around to get your blood pumping? Things like running on the spot with high knees, squat jumps, star jumps, anything that will make you out of breath quickly

Differentstarts · 25/11/2023 21:19

heldinadream · 25/11/2023 20:45

@187s are you feeling ill at all or just cold? Shivering and feeling cold CAN be a sepsis symptom.
I suggest you call 111.
Are you alone?

A tad dramatic 🙄

HeadNorth · 25/11/2023 21:20

How can you live somewhere the temperature goes down to -1 and not own socks ???

TheClitterati · 25/11/2023 21:23

I swim in the sea today and got really cold. It was "feels like 1degree" in the wind.

It's ok to get cold, you just need to warm up properly afterwards. Put warm layers on, move around a bit, drink something hot.

Scruffington · 25/11/2023 21:25

If you were in a Victorian novel you'd quickly develop a fever which would then naturally lead to insanity, and as a gibbering wreck you'd then be confined to an asylum for the rest of your days.

You need movement. Try half an hour's hoovering or dancing or something more fun.

Dancing is much more appealing than my squat jump suggestion further up 😂

Nowherenew · 25/11/2023 21:45

If I have ‘cold bones’ (where I feel cold inside and no amount of layers or hot drinks can warm me up) then the best way is to have a hot shower and then put on layers and have a hot drink.

Its the hot shower that makes the difference.

Scarletttulips · 25/11/2023 21:52

Sounds like Hypothermia, please seek help.

Niallig32839 · 25/11/2023 21:57

Once I get really cold to my bones the only thing that makes it go away is going to bed to sleep and I wake up feeling warmed up

tiredandolderthanithought · 25/11/2023 22:01

Cannot underhand anyone who doesn't own socks!! If I have cold feet I stay cold for ages!!!' Get some socks!

Differentstarts · 25/11/2023 22:04

No it doesn't it sounds like she needs to dress appropriately for the season. No coat and no socks will make you feel cold its winter.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 25/11/2023 22:04

I’m another one that finds when I’m really cold the only thing that helps is a hot bath.

queenmeadhbh · 25/11/2023 22:05

please come back and tell us if you just wear shoes and boots with bare feet or if for some mad reason you only ever wear skirts and dresses with tights hence no socks?

i hate when I get bone cold - hot food and bed with hot water bottle (and another person ideally).

TTCnewbies · 25/11/2023 22:06

Is this a joke? Why don't you own socks? What do you wear under shoes?

StBrides · 25/11/2023 22:08

You're just chilled through, it can happen easily in just a short time as you've found.
Hot food / drink, hot bath, snuggle on with a couple of hot water bottles or a heated blanket. You'll warm up.

You can also try some star jumps to get your blood moving

PortalooSunset · 25/11/2023 22:13

How the actual can anyone not own socks?!

I've read you're op again @187s and I think if you literally were only wearing a bra and a thin top then you'd be lucky not to have hypothermia or been arrested

HungryandIknowit · 25/11/2023 22:14

I'm really surprised at the number of people who regularly get very cold from being outdoors. Get some merino thermals and alpaca socks. You will not regret it.
