Is it just becoming the norm? How is everyone affording it in a cost of living crisis?

No. If people want to have whatever put in their face it's up to them to research it and take some sort of accountability if it all goes wrong

Doesn't work in rl though does it?

Society has a responsibility to protect the stupid from themselves. It's needed, for lots of reasons.

Fair point. I shall reflect on my position.

I don't think saying things like "look like they want a dick in their gob" is really out of concern for wider impact or dodgy practitioners.

I don't either. It's like something Bernard bloody Manning would say.

People can do what they want with their appearance, and other people can discuss it and have views on it as long as they are polite to the person.

I'm quite rough and ready looking most days - jeans, top, trainers, no makeup and my hair is at an awkward growing out stage. I'm sure others think I look scruffy.

But I wouldn't expect to turn up to a job interview or wedding or funeral looking like this and for people to think my appearance is just as appropriate as those in more formal attire.

I have naturally full lips, I wonder if people think I've had filler, I hope not! I was called BJ lips in school it wasn't nice at all!

The fact that injectables are not regulated properly is in itself misogynistic. In any other circumstance where you'd be getting your face injected there is regulation and only certain professionals can carry it out. The reason this industry is not regulated is probably because people see injectables as 'just silly little beauty treatments where silly little women do silly things to themselves'. An extension of 'normal' beauty treatments/enhancements, not considered a medical intervention despite potential necrosis of tissue if they go wrong. This is the same for many 'beauty treatments' though. Nail technicians are also not regulated, and nail work carried out badly/with low quality products can also result in damage to nail beds but again - who cares, silly women and their silly nails.

See - this makes me think we should tackle the issue of people thinking it's appropriate to call someone BJ lips rather than the lip filler industry.

JessieLongleg · 23/11/2023 11:19

As someone with naturally big lips i can always see fillers. Some on here say well if it doesn't hurt anybody else then why not. This fad was pushed through porn as well as already being over sexualised. I'm a natural blonde with a big pointy bum. Men and women took too much interest before I was too old to realise why. In the 80-90s I was laughed at and bullied for these features even the blond lashes. As they have got more popular the kind of white men that find me attractive have become more sleazy. I really do have a resting pout face ! It was so strange being rejected by the culture I was born into but then realising there are other cultures that value my features highly. So glad I live in London.

Another thing I noticed all of a sudden I looked rich as it was presumed my lips were fake. Because I'm a white girl. People still ask now if I'm part black because of my lips, wide nose etc. Women with fillers never ask me if I'm natural lol

Before bigger lips got popular there was more women reducing the size of them and they were mainly non white women.

Some of these comments are really cringe early in the thread, especially the one that mentions "younger teenagers aren't getting lip fillers". Firstly, ofcourse they aren't, secondly, why are you pit fighting young women who have 0 interest in you against each other. Some people want lip filler, some don't. If it's so ugly and horrifying let them crack on. I personally think the overweight look is unattractive but I don't make threads about hideous they look despite it being a choice to be so.

KimberleyClark · 23/11/2023 12:09

I don’t have naturally big lips. I have a small mouth. On the plus side my lips are a nice shape and colour and well defined. I won’t be messing around with them.

buttons55 · 23/11/2023 12:40

@KimberleyClark @AlwaysGinPlease ahh thank you I was always self conscious of my big lips and teeth but now I'm in my 30s it seems to be the trend 😅

Lemmoella · 23/11/2023 12:47

It’s not ok to use the language like blow job lips and all sorts of offensive terms.

This completely ruins the valid debate about the ethics of the unregulated practice of fillers. If practitioners were all properly regulated you would not find women paying them to mutilate their faces dangerously with injectables. I will always stand by my comments that it is very hard to be objective about your own appearance and people who lack in self confidence may go to extreme lengths of changing their appearance and lose all sight of what normal or not strange would look like. I am pretty sure that women do not set out to look odd strange or stretched that’s not their intention, however the practitioners and society can mislead them into believing it does look ok and is completely normal to have giant shiny lumpy lips. Chrissy Tiegan has always been very beautiful but from a side profile she looks very strange now, she has had so much work done.

buttons55 · 23/11/2023 13:07

Personally when it was called BJ lips it was 20 years ago in school so I'm hoping times have changed a little since then! Boys in my year also put up page 3, topless nuts magazine photos in the common room. I think that would cause uproar if it happened these days

AntonFeckoff · 23/11/2023 13:15

Some women have always had lips with what PPs talk about as telltale signs of lip fillers. Just Google vintage lipstick ads. Some women have a bit of a ridge naturally, or a pale vermillion border (including me). Look at Maura Tierney in the 90s and early 00s.

The BJ comments are disgusting. Really out of order. I'm surprised to hear people come out with that sort of thing, in reference to women's lips, on a site like this.

My lips are like those naturally. Though ironically those sorts of lips suit filler (small amount) because it doesn't change their look drastically, if that makes sense.

Lemmoella · 23/11/2023 13:48

@Jellycats4life yes I mean, I feel sad looking at this as I’m quite sure it wasn’t her intention to have this look but a surgeon or practitioner did it anyway? The filler can be reversed but she had buccal fat removal which can’t be. If we can’t tell women when to stop, out of concern who can? Just let people carry on even if they look bizarre but are somewhat unaware and have lost touch with reality?

My lips look very normal

Lip fillers don't automatically mean duck lips

First rule of mumsnet - don’t post selfies if you’re young and attractive. It just isn’t worth the venom.

AntonFeckoff · 23/11/2023 13:51

@User0224 exactly. Your lips look fab and I wouldnt have guessed you’d had filler@suntannedsnowballs. Sorry to hear about your accident.

babbygabby · 23/11/2023 14:03

the buccal fat removal thing confuses me, what happens when you get older?

Timewentfast · 23/11/2023 14:06

I just feel sad at all the 'work' women are getting done these days. (yes I'm old). If I watch films from the seventies or early eighties it's amazing how different people look. No breast implants, no lip fillers, etc. Women looked like real women in the street looked. I mean they were on TV so they were probably considered ' attractive' at the time but they still looked real.

Most young women are attractive just by virtue of the fact they are young and still have that lovely fresh, dewy look that you lose as you get older. Such a shame they are not allowed to be young and natural anymore (I mean I know they are......but so much pressure to look a certain way with lip fillers, fake eyelashes, fake tan )

buttons55 · 23/11/2023 14:13

Honestly I think some women like the fake look and that's entirely up to them, some women don't want it done to look natural. It's not my preference and if I was them I would be worried about how it would look when I'm older and I stop having fillers, or have to have implants out, etc but each to their own I guess!

Colette88 · 23/11/2023 06:29

I think girls WANT you to notice, like I'm paying for it so I want you to know I can afford it

That is so true....not lip filler but one of my friends had a boob job, and tbf they looked very natural as they weren't 'high set'. She doesn't like them and said and I quote "I want faker looking boobs, I paid good money for these boobs and want people to know I did'....she only had a boob job due to vast weight loss, so I thought the aim was to put back what she lost, not to look like a porn star!
