Is it just becoming the norm? How is everyone affording it in a cost of living crisis?

Are we entering the complicated area too of whether certain looks are culturally appropriated? The jury swings all over the place on dreadlocks for instance. But Rachel Dolesal and Jesy Nelson were unequivocally hauled over the media coals for their blackface looks. Do filled lips do the same thing?
Discuss..

I don't think so because I would guess that the aim of a lot of women who go for lip fillers is to look like a young Brigitte Bardot or Debbie Harry.
Unfortunately, it seems to be the case that the treatment can rarely give the person that 'bee sting' or 'cupid's bow' pout.

explainthistomeplease · 24/11/2023 09:40

Really? @Christmasspud - do you think many 20 year olds have heard of let alone dote on the style of Bardot or Harry? I'm 57 and think Debbie is the epitome of beauty and cool. But Bardot is too old a reference for me to want to emulate in any way.

Loubelle70 · 24/11/2023 09:41

I have no problem with plastic surgery, botox etc if it makes YOU feel better and improves self esteem. There will be obvious bad plastic surgery ...we can all identify that at times..and good plastic surgery/procedures. Its no reflection on the woman..we all want to feel good. Just unlucky if we get a crap beautician or plastic surgeon..or these things always come with risks. Or... some women want the larger lips look..its all fine!!! Its just knowing risks

There is certainly a school of thought that says beauty standards have evolved so much over the last decade or so, away from whiteness and thinness (like the supermodels of old) towards fetishising aspects of blackness such as filler and BBLs. Except it seems that too much blackness could never be embraced, which is why you see so many white celebs criticised for blackfishing but seemingly opting for a more “mixed race” aesthetic.

The Kardashians are a great example of this, at least three of whom have embraced filler and BBLs to a massive extent, and having children with black men. I won’t go into it any deeper but there’s a lot of discussion online about how the Kardashians really dictated the cultural zeitgeist for so many years, and curiously they seem to be dissolving their filler, removing their BBLs and dating white men…

I don't know how many 20 year olds have heard of Bardot but that's irrelevant. I am saying that that sort of look is what (I would guess) they are trying to achieve. That classic pout, and rather french, pout.

Even filler that isn’t noticeable in photos tends to be noticeable in real life. Filled lips have a rigidity or slight rubbery look as they move, and the skin lacks the natural lines and wrinkles that everyone has.

This is it, isn't it? So many women are adjusting their faces to look good in selfies, and they believe they look like that all the time. But they don't. What might look good on a photo, including heavy makeup, looks ridiculous in real life.

RiderofRohan · 24/11/2023 10:14

Jellycats4life · 24/11/2023 09:18

FWIW I believe it’s a filler technique that came from Russia (you also hear about “Russian lashes”). It doesn’t relate to emulating the face of a Russian woman.

I understand that some filling techniques came from Russia, but isn't it something to do with the lips being attributed to Russian dolls?

Which just illustrates the point that people would rather associate the lips with a doll or Angelina Jolie (however uncommon this type of lip is naturally found in white women) than recognise big lips are a normal feature in Black women.

African features are ugly until they become trendy, and then suddenly they aren't African any more.

explainthistomeplease · 24/11/2023 10:16

@Jellycats4life I suspect you might be right,
It's not Bardot or a French pout they're trying to emulate - it's the behemoth of a beauty standard which is thrust upon you g women who follow the likes of the Kardashians. And then if we interrogate what the Kardashians are trying to achieve, where does that leave us?

Jellycats4life · 24/11/2023 10:24

Yes, you’re spot on of course @RiderofRohan. Which links perfectly with what I’ve said about modern beauty standards, Kardashians and the fetishisation of black features. Which, incidentally, I learned about via black women on Tiktok.

Saggypants · 23/11/2023 00:25

It's fashion, it'll pass like everything else does.

It might be cheap but add in brows, nails, tan, hair etc and it's a small fortune every month to get that 'look' which is on trend. I worry how many young women are missing out on the opportunity to build wealth while they're still at home with no dependents, because of all the money being frittered away on this stuff.

Oh… absolutely. I have younger friends who spend a lot of money on beauty stuff (nails, waxing, tats, Botox) and complain they can’t afford to buy a house yet. I feel like giving them a shake

Sartre · 24/11/2023 12:38

Some women don’t look so bad with it, Kylie Jenner looks better with it for example. It only looks dreadful when they take it too far and end up with fish lips.

zinfi · 24/11/2023 13:12

I was just going to disagree with with you, but see you've already said that it's rarely achieved. I agree. They might be going for that sort of look but the most common lips I see have been so obviously overfilled (probably how I noticed them) any old way that they don't resemble any natural lips that I've ever seen.

zinfi · 24/11/2023 13:19

Yes Russian lips is just a different technique. I think it's supposed to be better for migration and can give those defined edges. Personally I think that's the better one of you have a defined Cupid's bow. It's also more expensive (finer needles used etc).

Though obviously it's not good for everyone. I think a good aesthetician will sometimes use a mix of techniques and discuss with the client. Or you can get 1.4 ml for £50 just plain injected in, no questions asked, and those I think account for most of the bad lips.

@Albioncreed I can imagine it does add up to a lot, but the average first time buyer deposit needed last year was around £60,000. Would you say your younger friends were spending that sort of money on the 'look'? Even over a decade?

Hi, I see where you are coming from.

but I live in Scotland. Locally there are 2 bed flats for £70k. With a £7k deposit you could buy a flat, paying £400 a month mortgage.

to rent the same type of flat you are looking £700 pcm.

so, it’s much more beneficial to try and save for a few years and reap rewards later.

Diymesss · 24/11/2023 14:10

@Albioncreed wow - for those kind of prices I can see how saving up a deposit might be doable! I think in other places it can seem so unobtainable that people just give up and concentrate on enjoying their lives as much as they can.

My mum (who is Nigerian) finds it hilarious because when she was growing up in London in the 70s, having big lips was ugly and African, and she was told this regularly. I also saw lip fillers advertised as 'Russian lips' the other day and I thought way to whitewash everything.

The technique is Russian. Don't make everything about race - you'll exhaust yourself

I'm guessing from someone who doesn't deal with exhausting racism regularly but likes to comment on issues all the same.

But maybe educate yourself before doing so:
'The name is coined from the look of the lips you often see on Russian stacking dolls. The dolls that are also known as Babushka dolls. As well as being called Russian Lips, you may also hear them referred to as 'doll lips'

zinfi · 24/11/2023 18:06

Forgive me for sticking my oar in, but I don't think think Wensleydale said that it had no connection to Russian dolls, which is the look it is probably is based on.

It is the name of the technique, and as I've said before it's a very good technique to use if you have a defined, prominent Cupid's bow or 'm' so you don't lose that definition. IMO

I have lips shaped just like those, so if I decided to that's the filler technique I'd request in a consultation.

Absolutely! In London… well… unless in a very high paid job (ie 3x national average) or help from parents:/ inheritance I think you could save and save forever and still be chasing your tail

Loubelle70 · 22/11/2023 22:23

Ive noticed this too .. lip filler isnt expensive really.

It’s about £200 every 3-6 months. That’s an extortionate price to look so ridiculous.

AntonFeckoff · 24/11/2023 20:42

The ‘Russian technique’ lips look odd to me, raised, as if they’ve been stuck on.

Anotherparkingthread · 24/11/2023 00:36

Fucking hell. The comments on here. 'blow job lips' ... 'make a 25 year old look like mutton.' ... 'tarty'.

And yet apparently home of the feminist rebellion. I image all of you would be absolutely fine with your husband's, sons, and fathers etc talking about women in such a way. What about men in general talking about women's bodies that way?absolutely vile. You should lead by example.

The words used in this thread to describe women on this thread are dehumanising. It's not for you to like and their choices on how they choose to alter their appearance are of no consequence to you. The language you have used is no different to vile language used to demonise women for wearing short skirts.

I'm fucking appalled that grown women go around talking about other women like this.

I actually think the delusion that lip filler looks nice is body dysmorphia/ mental health issues.

Christ 🙄

Christ? What’s Christ about it?

The lengths women will go to for this one ideal look of beauty is insane. It just doesn’t work for everyone and women are becoming (very bad) clones of this one ideal. It’s ruining the unique beauty of women everywhere. It’s sad and a horrible industry.
