AIBU to think that if your HB level comes back at 4.7 the doctor should have done more than give iron tablets?

Are you absolutely sure it was 4.7?!?! I'm pretty sure below 5 is organ failure!!

shivawn · 22/11/2023 19:39

I would expect more yes, like an urgent trip to A&E.

Are you talking about yourself? You must feel horrific?

Yes absolutely sure. I've actually just rang out of hours. Waiting for them to phone me back
I'm fainting up to 20 times a day and feel so so unwell

I definitely didn't. I know with how unwell I feel.its happened before, although not as bad as before as it was 4.1 then

If it’s that low you need to be in A&E. I can’t even say you must feel like death warmed up because you must be fucking freezing.

NoImRenlea · 22/11/2023 19:50

You need to get to A&E then

I was speaking to a friend last weekend who was below 5 and she just had a lot of fainting episodes. Her GP however organised urgent tests at the hospital, so yes OP, the doctor should have done more than just give you iron tablets.

Famousperson2023 · 22/11/2023 20:05

If it’s really 4.7 you need to get yourself to A&E prompto as you are at risk of having a cardiac arrest.(A&E dr).

Pip47 · 22/11/2023 20:06

Think you should ring 111 or go to A&E and say you think they’ve made a mistake

TheUsualChaos · 22/11/2023 20:06

YANBU but I'm also not surprised as all my GP ever does is prescribe iron. My Hb is not as low as yours though and they should be taking it v seriously.

Kathy34 · 22/11/2023 20:07

Yep. I hit 6.3 and was sent to ae for a blood transfusion. They also set me up with a hemotoligist, oncologist and gynecologist. They need to figure out why your so low

Have you some kind of haematology background? To drop down below 5 is extremely low. You must have had transfusions in the past?

My HB recently dropped to 9.8 due to pregnancy related anemia and I felt absolutely awful, I was so fatigued, getting faint and out of breath just climbing the stairs so I can't even begin to imagine how you're feeling.

steff13 · 22/11/2023 20:08

Mine was nine and my doctor gave me iron infusions. Here the standard to get infusions is 30 or less.

monsteramunch · 22/11/2023 20:11

Please just get yourself to A&E OP, this isn't something worth fucking about with. Really hope you're ok.

Below 30? You must be using a different measuring system. Normal HB for a women is 12-16.

spiderlight · 22/11/2023 20:14

When mine was 6, I was given a transfusion.

Nap1983 · 22/11/2023 20:15

Thats extremely low… I would go to A&E you prob need a few units of blood. A&E at my hospital sent police to someones home who had a slightly lower but similar HB for a welfare check and to bring in. Id be very concerned why its as low as that tbh…

Underthesea65 · 22/11/2023 20:16

Out of hours doctor phoned back pretty quickly and I'm currently in a and e. They have taken blood and have marked as urgent. Will keep you all updated when I can. Thank you all for your replies

12 = 120
16 = 160
both scales seem to be used

scoobydoo1971 · 22/11/2023 20:23

I have anaemia, and on iron replacement. The worst reading was about 7, at which point I got a transfusion as having lots of surgery. You need the same and don't take no for an answer from the GP. Iron tablets are not enough if you are that low, and don't drive as you risk cognitive confusion/ fainting. You also need to find out why you are so low...diet, periods, internal bleeding? Consultant referral and thyroid check should be minimal care for you.

Yekaterinap · 22/11/2023 20:39

If that gp has left you with a level like that, he wants sacked.

Devonshiregal · 22/11/2023 20:40

youll have to be given a transfusion or two. Why are you so low? Your doctor is insane. There is some real issue with doctors in this country cockblocking iron infusions. Why?! It’s madness. They tell you to take pills which past a certain point just won’t do enough.

DONT leave without treatment. That level can cause heart attacks. You’re very sick and for some reason women are just experienced ted to toddle on and fuck off with severely low iron. Hope you feel better soon.

witchypaws · 22/11/2023 20:46

My dad was 4 and the doctor sent an ambulance and drove over himself as he was so concerned
He found my dad mid shift "can I not finish work before I go in? Yes I suppose I do feel a bit tired" Hmm
2 blood transfusions and he was feeling much better

MargaretThursday · 22/11/2023 20:47

I was similar with dd1 and the Dr said if I hadn't been pregnant I'd have had a blood transfusion.
I was on serious amounts of iron tablets and regular blood tests. But my iron levels came up pretty quickly, which was a good thing.
