AIBU to think that if your HB level comes back at 4.7 the doctor should have done more than give iron tablets?

witchypaws · 22/11/2023 20:47

To add it doesn't surprise me as my own doctors missed that I was neutropenic. For 8 years
A locum GP saw my results, charted all the prior ones and sent me to haematology as an emergency. My neutrophils were 0.3 when I was seen

hazelnutlatte · 22/11/2023 20:50

Are you sure that's your hb and not your ferritin level? I Work in a GP practice - the lab would phone us urgently with a hb that low and an ambulance would be called.

AnneValentine · 22/11/2023 20:52

glad you’ve gone in.

hazelnutlatte · 22/11/2023 20:53

Sorry ignore my post querying if its your ferritin level - I've just noticed your update. Hope you are ok

Sexnotgender · 22/11/2023 20:58

Glad you’re in A&E, that’s scarily low.

whatfreshheck · 22/11/2023 21:05

Hells bells, 4.7 is critically low. Anything under 11 is classed as an emergency. Glad you are in A&E and they are sorting you.

amoobaa · 22/11/2023 21:11

I was given a lot of drugs and a blood transfusion when I dropped to 70… yours is worse, so I hope you’re getting the treatment you need. I’m so sorry… that GP needs investigating!

Underthesea65 · 22/11/2023 21:27

Hi all, sorry I haven't been able to read through all the messages yet, but my bloods are back and confirmed my Hb is 4.7. they have ordered my blood and they are starting with 4 pints.
Looks like I'm here for a while. DH is away home to get me some pyjamas etc

therealcookiemonster · 22/11/2023 21:52

@Underthesea65 just read your update.... honestly it's bonkers.

normally patients are semi conscious at 4.7! very glad you are OK

this is so serious!

my lowest was 5, and I could barely talk

vipersnest1 · 22/11/2023 21:58

@Underthesea65, it's almost like you're making it up, isn't it? NOT.
The posters who think OP is lying need to keep their sticky fingers from posting on this thread and report instead. I'm sure MNHQ will be glad to confirm or deny.
Anyhoo, @Underthesea65, you're in the right place now and getting the right treatment. I'm glad you listened to the sensible people on here. As the relatively sensible PPs have suggested, you really do need investigations into how and why you've become so anaemic. I hope you feel better soon.

Exasperateddonut · 22/11/2023 22:01

I was given pills at 9.2 and felt like absolute shite. You poor poor sod. Hope the transfusion makes you feel fabulous :)

Riverlee · 22/11/2023 22:01

Glad you being treated.

NotManyDaysTilChristmas · 22/11/2023 22:05

God, poor you, so glad to hear you’re being treated urgently now though. Best wishes.

iolaus · 22/11/2023 22:16

Mine went down to 5.5 before I was admitted and had a blood transfusion - didn't realise how ill I felt until I was better if that makes sense

TUrned out mine was due to pernicious anaemia and coeliac disease

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/11/2023 22:20

Blimey. Please make sure they thoroughly investigate the cause of this. Unless you’ve recently been in an accident or had surgery they need to be ruling out stuff like malabsorption issues.

handyandie · 22/11/2023 22:24

4 units!!! OP please ask if they have consulted the on call haematologist, because unless you have been actively bleeding it is dangerous to give you that much. They need to test iron, b12 and folate, if there is a b12 or folate deficiency it's dangerous to give that much blood.

Just spotted your message. Yes I have been actively bleeding. They don't know the cause yet, I was in hospital in February getting blood too. Was told within 2 weeks I would have an appointment with a consultant and still haven't heard anything. Phoned them and was told I was on the list and would have to wait my turn. Hoping that now I'm in again for the exact same thing, they might hurry up a bit, but I know they're stretched beyond belief

handyandie · 23/11/2023 07:26

@Underthesea65 that's a relief, I hope they can source and stop the bleed.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/11/2023 07:54

You poor thing. I hope you are feeling better soon. You really need to make a complaint to your GP surgery about this.l

OP, don't let them fob you off. you need proper investigations. if they discharge you this time with no answers and no concrete plan, please go straight to PALS.

there is something serious going on and you are at real risk of harm if remains untreated.

Underthesea65 · 23/11/2023 14:40

Hi all. Just a quick update. Still here. consultant has been to see me. They said they want more investigations done but there are no beds and there are at least 50 people ahead of me. I'm still getting blood and they want to do iron infusions as well. I'm in a side bay in a and e and it is unreal. They haven't even offered me food. DH went to shop and got me a few bits. I've never seen anything like this.

OP posts:
Silvers11 · 23/11/2023 15:25

Was wondering how things are doing @Underthesea65. At least they haven't thrown you out, but a side bay in A and E isn't ideal. Hope they can find you a bed on a ward before too long. Thinking of you

Thank you. Yes I'm just glad to be getting blood. Honestly felt like I was dying

OP posts:
peanutbutt · 23/11/2023 16:09

Good grief. You'll be short of breath, exhausted, your legs will feel like lead. Please escalate this: I was under 70, and I had two transfusions and discharged on 200mg ferrous sulphate three times a day.

Are you losing blood anywhere ? Heavy periods. You shouldn't be reading this anyway, you should be in a hospital.

Firefly2009 · 23/11/2023 16:13

I think you need a blood transfusion
