Laurence Fox libel trial

newnamethanks · 22/11/2023 18:07

Laurence Fox has been sued for libel by two people he described as paedophiles in a twitter spat. They described LF as racist. Trial began today, suing and counter-suing. Mr Fox arrived with his - written thus (daily mail) in single quotes - 'girlfriend'. Odd description.

Agree he does do trollish stirring, but also he makes serious points. I think calling the academic racist was making a serious point. And I agree that if you’re libellous you risk being sued. I imagine he was making a (fairly childish) point - you call me a racist so I’m going call you something just as mean and (in his mind) unfounded. He’s bonkers really but I appreciate public figures who are not all about being careful and likeable. For me, he doesn’t cross the line into inciting violence or actually discriminating against anyone.

LF calls himself a Colour Blind Liberal that in itself is problematic and imo racist "not seeing" colour is dismissive.

I know. I'm really annoyed that I feel like I can't watch old episodes of Lewis again.

Me too. It seems such bad luck on Kevin Whateley, Rebecca Front and Clare Holman that they are missing out on repeat fees because viewer figures have plummeted directly due to Fox.

Relax @Lilacanemone , LF, as already mentioned, is counter-suing. The court will decide whether the completely - famous for it - non racist LF is, or is not.

He's got a problem there that is not just limited to whether the court accepts he is a racist or not. To succeed in a counterclaim he will have to show that his reputation has been damaged, i.e. that he has been "lowered in the eyes of right-thinking people". And he's buggered his reputation all by himself. How can it have been damaged or lowered when he has already ensured it is on the floor?

Turns out the woman he was with yesterday is a white conspiracy theorist who blacked up to accompany him. Not racist at all eh? Fucking hell.

I hope the barristers acting for his opponents have taken due note and use it for cross-examination purposes.

I actually think he’s an amazing actor. I loved him in Victoria.

As a human being - scum

An actor whom he attacked for being untalented has pointed out how he went up against Laurence Fox in an audition for the part of a young man who was the son of a character played by James Fox. Yes, in a competition as to who should pay Laurence Fox's own father's son, the other actor won.

Lilacanemone · 25/11/2023 00:00

No. No, he hasn’t. Although I’m really not surprised at this response on MN which seems to have its fair share of shouty lefties and trouble makers who are always looking to be offended and cancel people for stupid things such as breathing the wrong.

A number of clearly proven examples of his racism have been posted upthread. Why do you think they are not racist?

Anisette · 28/11/2023 17:22

I wish him good luck in losing his trial and the rest of his money. His barrister is earning the easiest ££££££ possible.

I hope for his lawyers' sakes that they've taken money in advance. If or when he has to pay damages and costs to his opponents, I rather doubt there will be much left.

It definitely does distract if it isn’t historically accurate. If it was accurate then he’s showing his ignorance I guess. Anyway each to his own.

But it was historically accurate - and it's telling that he picked on the people with dark skin as 'historically inaccurate', not the white people from Australia, New Zealand or Canada who were also there.

If I see something on TV that I think isn't quite right, I look up whether it is in fact inaccurate. We have this amazing thing called 'the internet' which I'm sure Laurence Fox is well able to use.

But he chose not to, he spouted a load of racist bollocks online instead.

I have. I found him utterly odious. He gives me incel vibes. Blaming everyone else and it will all be their fault when he finally explodes and kicks right off. Poor poor thing, his ex wife keeps his children from him blah blah blah.

There was that utter whingefest when he became too unlikeable for GBeebies too.

There is, however, now a small part of me that now wants to see LF play Batman.

newnamethanks · 28/11/2023 18:34

Twatman is the correct spelling I'm told. Frankly, if we're relying on Hollywood to supply us with reliable historical information then we're all stuffed. LF is a whinging brat. I believe his legal fees are being funded by some of his 'friends of Liberty'. I hope they've got deep pockets.

A whinging brat indeed !

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 28/11/2023 19:08

Lawrence has really brought all this upon himself.

Will he learn from it?

No.

newnamethanks · 28/11/2023 22:12

He'll learn from it if he's got to pay his own legal fees. And any damages. And fund the inevitable panicky appeal. 🍿

Myfabby · 28/11/2023 22:18

from today..

'I was in panic. [after Question Time] I wasn't expecting such a huge backlash but it was temporary.
'We were right in the middle of the BLM craze so I thought not being on the side of the BLM thing might be a bit of a problem for me as an actor.'
'The effect on my life had been devastating. I'd suddenly become overnight a bit of a celebrity and people coming up to me on the street and saying whopee! or not whopee.
'I'd had some experience of fame with my former wife because she was very popular - but not myself.
'Despite what I say I am quite shy out on the street. Being too anxious to go out and get a pint of milk, that's pretty devastating.
'The serious harm done to me had nothing to do with Question Time, it certainly effected my prospects at that time.
'I thought wow I didn't realise the whole of the world was intolerant of certain views.
'It's quite shocking when overnight I became a topic of conversation in everyone's living room.

I wonder if the "friends of Liberty" are prepared to cough up the other side's fees if or when he loses.

RafaistheKingofClay · 28/11/2023 22:59

Is that the question time appearance where he called a mixed race woman racist on national television because she said he was a white privileged man? Ironic.

newnamethanks · 28/11/2023 23:35

Dear Lord above. Well, he's just a tender wee soul after all. And we scared him with our intolerance of his intolerant views. Ho hum.

But what she said was racist.

newnamethanks · 29/11/2023 06:38

Mr Laurence Fox. Actor from the 'acting aristocracy', the Fox family. Educated at a top rank public school. Offered a career on a plate. Previously married to established actor and singer in same profession. White, male. I know facts are unfashionable but they are not malleable,, as some people appear to believe. Laurence Fox is a privileged white male. That's a fact and not a racist slur.

being called white and privileged isn't racist however many times the white and privileged say it.

Myfabby · 29/11/2023 08:07

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 02:40

But what she said was racist.

It wasn't. It was fact. He is massively privileged and that comes from a mix of things as described upstream. Skin colour primarily, but his family of origin, private schooling etc. I mean how else would this mid rate actor be so deluded he had a chance at being Batman.

White Privilege is..

Merriam Webster: The set of social and economic advantages that white people have by virtue of their race.
Oxford Languages: Inherent advantages possessed by a white person on the basis of their race in a society characterized by racial inequality and injustice.
Cambridge: The fact of people with white skin having advantages in society that other people do not have.

newnamethanks · 29/11/2023 08:17

Correction: Fox is exceptionally privileged, far beyond the privilege generally understood to be accorded to white males.

You can present critical race theory as fact as much as you like but it isn’t fact, it’s a theory and a contested one too.

Whether the QT response was racist or not I’m not sure - the lady called him white and kind of implied there was something wrong with that, or things that a ‘privileged, white man’ couldn’t understand. If it isn’t racist it’s certainly rude and divisive. And saying it’s a fact isn’t helpful really - plenty of racists state things that are ‘facts’, but the intention and tone matters.
