Laurence Fox libel trial

newnamethanks · 22/11/2023 18:07

Laurence Fox has been sued for libel by two people he described as paedophiles in a twitter spat. They described LF as racist. Trial began today, suing and counter-suing. Mr Fox arrived with his - written thus (daily mail) in single quotes - 'girlfriend'. Odd description.

I haven’t said it was a good idea. I just said I didn’t think his intentions were racist (or homophobic for that matter). I have no reason to disbelieve his explanation.

Fox defended changing his profile picture to an image of an LGBT pride 'progress' flag in the shape of a Swastika.
He said: 'I've got no objection actually to the rainbow flag because of the persecution homosexuals suffered until quite recently.
What I object to is inclusion of the black line for Black Lives Matter and the brown line which is meant to represent all brown people, and the blue and pink line which is meant to represent transgenderism.
Ms Skinner said the tweet was overtly hostile to black and brown people and offensive to Jewish people.
Ms Skinner referred to a tweet where Fox objected to football fans being arrested for chanting 'get your face out' to a Qatari waitress with her face covered.
'You're celebrating there the abuse of a Qatari waitress,' she said.
'I thought it was quite funny,' Fox replied.
Ms Skinner asked if it was offensive when Fox posted photographs of himself and his children 'blacked up' with a face app.
Fox replied: 'It certainly wasn't offensive to my own partner who's mixed race.'

would have tagged @Delightfuldays but i suspect there's some name changing going on so she would have gotten the message anyways😂

Do you think it's likely that a teacher would keep their job if they posted a swastika? Do you think a politician would keep the whip if they posted a swastika? Do you think a doctor could post it, or a civil servant, or anyone in a professional job with standards to uphold? Or do you understand that posting a swastika is generally considered to be abhorrent and something that most people would condemn?

Halllooo · 29/11/2023 20:53

‘just said I didn’t think his intentions were racist (or homophobic for that matter)’

he's both. He knows it, you know it, I know it.
He doesn’t care. It’s not illegal to be racist or homophobic or even such a twat that your twatyness is visible from space- you only get in trouble when you start trying to harm others…

Halllooo · 29/11/2023 20:55

‘Ms Skinner asked if it was offensive when Fox posted photographs of himself and his children 'blacked up' with a face app.’

fucking hell. I see why Billie keeps the kids away from him as much as possible.
Imagine THAT being your dad.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 20:59

I haven't changed my name at all.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 21:01

I just can't be bothered to carry on with the discussion as people start being rude and nasty.

bombastix · 29/11/2023 21:02

Fox can say all he likes that he's not a homophobe or a racist. That's his view, but it's not actually his decision, because in presenting all of his idiocy to the work, people will make their own judgment. He can't complain, because the option was clearly not to do any of these things at all. He enjoys being contrary but rejects the obvious consequences as to how he is perceived. Ridiculous

Or you've run out of ways to defend racist actions.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 21:06

@TheOtherSideOfTheStory yes that's it 🙄

newnamethanks · 29/11/2023 21:08

Rude and nasty of course, how upsetting. But not Nazi apologists.

I'm not a Nazi apologist. Do not call me that. It is extremely offensive.

What you say is true, though I’m not sure it would result in instant dismissal. Possibly a disciplinary depending on the job. But I don’t think that’s the point really. LF isn’t a professional. If he has some unsavoury opinions, does it matter if he brings the acting profession into disrepute?

Do I think the pride swastika is abhorrent? I wouldn’t say that. Horrible, crass, offensive yes. If he was actually a Nazi or was proposing some kind of persecutory ideology I would find it abhorrent.

Anisette · 29/11/2023 21:11

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 17:05

It was racist. She used the colour of his skin as a reason to shut his opinion down.

Blatantly she didn't shut him down, as he interrupted her. The colour of his skin was 100% relevant to his assessment of whether racism is a problem in the UK. Anyone would be entitled to be concerned that a while male cannot give an accurate view on black people's experience of racism. If LF had been able to give a logical, reasoned response on why he claims to believe that that concern would be misplaced, I'm sure everyone in the studio and indeed the wider audience would have been happy to hear him out. The trouble is, he didn't make any effort whatsoever to do that.

My point wasn't about bringing the profession into disrepute; it's just to say that posting a swastika brings about negative consequences. Fox can't really complain about losing opportunities and popularity - anyone posting that would face consequences. That it would be disciplinary in professional workplaces just illustrates that it is a serious matter, and everyone is well aware of that. And it's treated so seriously for a reason - the connotations of the swastika are shocking to anyone decent.

I'm sure it's a complete coincidence that 'Twatman' is trending on Twitter.

Twitter at its absolute finest. Up there with Wagatha Christie 😂

I've just done a quick research. So he has retweeted a pride flag in the shape of a swastika to support pride. He thought this was ok as the British flag had been posted in the shape of a swastika by lots of people before.
There is some more stuff on it but my understanding is that he has t posted the swastika shape in support of Nazis but to support Gay people as their flag was hijacked by Trans people
All a bit complicated. But the intention. As far as I can see was not racist. But very bad taste.

Oh, how delightfully naive of him. Not.

He knows perfectly well that there is nothing OK about posting a swastika, there is no way that he believed that it could ever be anything other than deeply offensive. Having had a rather expensive education, it is also impossible to believe that he didn't know that the Nazis persecuted gay people including the use of torture, the death sentence, and imprisonment in concentration camps where the majority died.

It's not "bad taste" and it's not remotely supportive of Pride. It's horribly homophobic and transphobic.

This is getting a bit reminiscent of Johnson supporters who used to paint themselves regularly into corners where their only defence against accusations that he lied was to say that he genuinely believed what he was saying. Yes, both Fox and Johnson supporters are apparently perfectly happy to depict their heroes as utter fools in order to avoid facing the reality of just how horrible they are.

Calling someone a Nazi apologist is offensive.
