bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

Every name that you have ever heard has been 'copied' from someone else.

Or maybe not! A very young new mother was asked what her daughter's name would be and she said something no-one had heard of, when asked where it was from she said she'd heard an advert for a deodorant and liked it the name.

You're just guessing. Are you upset that your daughter is no longer 'unique'?

The child will always be unique but its annoying when people copy anything.
Yes most names are shared by someone else but clearly you pick a name that's attractive to you, fits your family and your ideas about your child.
Picking a unique name in a small community setting clearly identifies you as an unimaginative twat. How many people in Hollywood would think its ok to call their kid Apple?

It was a small place where everyone knew everyone, the parent knew of my DDs name and when she eventually had her own child she took it

Took it? She removed it from your child by force so that you child doesn't have the name now?

I have a really common first name but I have never met anyone else even close to my age with it. They’re all starting to die off now and it hasn’t come back into fashion.
If you had named your child Sarah or Stephanie I bet they’d be the only one in their class.

Alan Bennett did a brilliant monologue on this subject that I haven't been able to find. It was about the more recent Jacobs and Samuels being middle-class rather than their working-class forebears - and the Gertrudes and Ednas being unlikely to make a comeback.
If anyone knows where to find it, I'd be grateful.

Well didn't you take it? 😂

Topsyturvy78 · 22/11/2023 18:22

FFS you don't own a name. It's just a name get over yourself. My name wasn't popular when I was growing up I hated it. I never met anyone else with the same name as me until I was in secondary school. I wanted to be called Karen.🤣🤣🤣

clarebear111 · 22/11/2023 18:22

How I wish this was my biggest problem.

When I was pregnant with DS1(18) I thought I had come across an unusual name. Mentioned it to DH who had never met anyone called it.
That name is Evie, fucking everywhere now.

Surely Evie is still uncommon for boys? (Ds?)

Evie wasn’t that uncommon 18 years ago

reallyfedup123 · 22/11/2023 18:23

This reminds me of my SIL who for many years went around saying my sister copied her sons name! I was too embarrassed to actually say I didn’t know her sons name so could my sister know? It was a very common name but apparently my sister copied her. It’s so immature.

reallyfedup123 · 22/11/2023 18:24

I obviously know her sons name now but at the time I didn’t - before I married DH

Zebedee55 · 22/11/2023 18:25

Names are up to the parents. No one owns them. 🙄

Moonshine5 · 22/11/2023 18:28

Lol
Is this a joke?
You sound entitled.
Unless you invented the name (and even then...)

Respectfully get a grip

Twister99 · 22/11/2023 18:28
Hmm
OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 22/11/2023 18:29

My son has a less common name. A mum named her son the same name as she really liked his. I was honoured!!

Orangeoranges42 · 22/11/2023 18:30

so you didn’t know as soon as this child was born?
not that much of a close nit community where everyone knows everyone by sounds of it.
ps you ‘copied’ someone in the first place

I appreciate its disappointing but come on.

AnneValentine · 22/11/2023 18:31

If you wanted to keep the name a secret you shouldn’t have named your child it.

GoonieGang · 22/11/2023 18:32

You were probably not unreasonable to be annoyed at the time but YDABU to still be annoyed a few years afterwards.
It happens, you didn’t copyright the name. Be flattered that someone else loved the name enough to use it.
Your child is unique regardless of name.

TolkiensFallow · 22/11/2023 18:32

Unless you invented the name then you’re being unreasonable. Names come in and out of fashion.

I wonder if it's Egypt, which inspired the thread earlier🤷🏼‍♀️

🤣🤣🤣
I think Egypt’s parents won’t have to worry about anyone copying .

Do head lice even give each other names?

Jem57 · 22/11/2023 18:33

Did you patent it??

CremeEggSupremacy · 22/11/2023 18:33

I envy your life if that's the kind of thing you have time to be annoyed about

Dontcallmescarface · 22/11/2023 18:34

When I moved back to my home village over 20 years ago DD was the only one, both in primary and, later on, in secondary school to have that name....now there's at least one girl with the same name in most years. I like to think of myself as a trailblazer. 😃

Dixiechickonhols · 22/11/2023 18:34

How do you know she copied? Unless it really is a unique one off Tootsie-Jae style name then it’s just a name.
I’m a leader in a girls activity 100 girls and several of same names - I think it’s effect of small area and similar folk. They all have similar tastes and gravitate to same names - so might only be top 500 nationally but in that area it’s top 20.

LiveatCityHall · 22/11/2023 18:35

My son has an unusual name. However if he moved to Wales his name would be incredibly common. Especially if you lived near Beddgelert in Caenarfon.
My name was also very unusual when I wad a child. I am now 49 and it's as common as Claire or Sarah. YABU.
