bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

It was a small place where everyone knew everyone, the parent knew of my DDs name and when she eventually had her own child she took it

Your poor nameless child.

Surgarblossom · 22/11/2023 18:35

Oh dear 😅
I've heard it all now!

Borth · 22/11/2023 18:35

Ah, the old it’s our name entitlement.

My son has a less common name. A mum named her son the same name as she really liked his. I was honoured!!

Great attitude! That's a lovely way to think about it.

🤣 You crazy

Daphnis156 · 22/11/2023 18:36

So thanks to you the name is now as common as muck.

Tee hee...

Greenpolkadot · 22/11/2023 18:36

Ffs...
I guess your life,,, and your daughter's is ruined now her name is tarnished.

Justme68 · 22/11/2023 18:38

No body owns a name !

itsnotmeitsu · 22/11/2023 18:38

I don't often come across people with my first name, even though I wouldn't have thought of it as an unusual one. I actually like meeting someone who has the same first name. What was a bit disconcerting was during a covid lockdown, when we were still having to queue ouside supermarkets. Once inside there was a tannoy announcement asking for '??' to go to the customer services desk. I thought I'd done something wrong, eg walked the wrong way down a one-way aisle. When I said I'd been called over the tannoy it turned out one of the supermarket managers had the same first and surname as me.

Fraca · 22/11/2023 18:39

My Dd has an unusual name. I never came across anyone else with it until she was about 9 when I discovered an old classmate of mine, who I'd lost touch with, had called her daughter the same name. I thought this was really nice as we'd been such good friends at school.

And then Dd got engaged to a man who had the same surname as my old classmate - so not only did both our girls have the same first name, they had the same surname too! (Or rather they would have, if Dd had actually gone on to marry the bloke in question but that's another story).

Eybyegum · 22/11/2023 18:41

DS has a very uncommon name ( but not unique or misspelled). I’ve only met 2 others, one was his best friend in a very small primary class and the other was DD boyfriend as a teenager. DD has what we thought was an uncommon name, 24 years ago, but soon found out was the most popular girls name most years. Despite that she was only at high school with one other.

Lifeomars · 22/11/2023 18:42

I have an unusual name , one of my neighbours called her daughter after me saying it was such a nice name. I was flattered and delighted

Silvers11 · 22/11/2023 18:42

LoL!! First world problem!! Not even a problem in fact. We pick names for our children that we like. If the other woman DID get the name from hearing your daughter's name then it is simply because she liked it too. That's why names come into and out of fashion.

MsPavlichenko · 22/11/2023 18:42

Even if all this is true nobody “ took” the name. It doesn’t belong to you or anybody else.

Wednesday6 · 22/11/2023 18:43

X Æ A-12 ?

Intelligenthair · 22/11/2023 18:43

I called my child Bogroll and no-one’s ever nicked it.

DON’T YOU ALL STEAL IT NOW.

Cupcakekiller · 22/11/2023 18:43

Well you must've heard it somewhere else first unless you made it up? 🤣

SouthLondonMum22 · 22/11/2023 18:44

lightisnotwhite · 22/11/2023 18:20

The child will always be unique but its annoying when people copy anything.
Yes most names are shared by someone else but clearly you pick a name that's attractive to you, fits your family and your ideas about your child.
Picking a unique name in a small community setting clearly identifies you as an unimaginative twat. How many people in Hollywood would think its ok to call their kid Apple?

It's funny that Apple is your example considering they actually got it from one of their producer (I think that's right) friends calling their daughter Apple.

Mirabai · 22/11/2023 18:44

I know you copied a celebrity’s child’s name and thought you would be the only one. You even told yourself that Shiloh/Marlow/Brooklyn was your own idea.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2023 18:45

Unless you made the name up, you also copied it from somewhere.

SeaUrchinHat · 22/11/2023 18:45

Presumably you made the name up yourself OP, otherwise why would you be so outraged?

A lesson learnt: a quick call to the Intellectual Property Office before the birth could've saved you from all this heartache...

Dear oh dear. Just when you think you've heard it all.

Concannon88 · 22/11/2023 18:45

Obviously heard of and copied her name? I highly doubt it. I'm always surprised at the number of mums who claim their child has a name no one else has ever heard of. Its bs. Tell us her name and I promise you lots of people will have heard it before.

Monkeypopcorn · 22/11/2023 18:47

I thought both my children's name were really unique. Didn't know a single other person with else with them and chose them for personal reasons that mean something to me but wouldn't make sense for anyone else. Both names appeared in the top 20 for baby names the next year. Both have younger children in their school with the same name. Never occured to me that they'd copied me or that I should be annoyed! It's just one of those things?

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/11/2023 18:47

@catphone

why does your child’s name need to be so unique and uncommon? Some might say the quest for an uncommon name is actually quite common …

Not even during covid? you must have a great anti-theft system
