bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

You can’t claim a name. DD make was incredibly unusual when she was born 16 years ago but it’s really grown in popularity now and is in the top 100. Surely if you like the name it doesn’t matter

People are insane when it comes to names IMO 😂

When I had DS (now 3), a girl from my town who was a couple of school years below me sent me a private message on social media telling me that she thought I was out of order for having not only copied her sons first name, but also his middle name 😅😂
I’d never spoken to the girl in my life and only vaguely knew who she was through other people. Had no idea she even had a child but he was 2 when my DS was born apparently.

Both first and middle names are common boys names. DSs middle name is spelled differently to hers and is directly after a family member. I now occasionally bump into her at playgroups etc as she has a second child and she is very frosty with me 😅

I really don’t see the issue myself but she ain’t happy 😂

Get a cat and name it after her second child.

Shout for it loudly whenever you are near her (even if it is safely shut up in the kitchen).

Keep talking about what an incredible coincidence it is.

So what?
Its a name.
I "stole" all 3 of my girls names
1st I saw a beautiful baby on a friends Facebook page named Amaya loved and stole it.
2nd I went to a travel agent and her name was Tiaan I loved it and stole it but spelt it tiarne.
3rd we were at a play centre and i heard a mum calling her little girl Siara so I stole that one too!
I'm a proud name stealer!

I don't know how you sleep at night with all that on your conscience!

😂

Dobbybigearsdog · 23/11/2023 18:02

It isn’t star bar - deville is it? The mum was so proud when she told us all

Lukey666 · 23/11/2023 18:04

you are being very unreasonable. You do not own a name.

bitchatty · 23/11/2023 18:06

did you ask her whether she liked her name?

Alan Bennett did a brilliant monologue on this subject that I haven't been able to find. It was about the more recent Jacobs and Samuels being middle-class rather than their working-class forebears - and the Gertrudes and Ednas being unlikely to make a comeback.
If anyone knows where to find it, I'd be grateful.

BodgerSparkins · 23/11/2023 18:09

I find I really like a name and suddenly it becomes popular, it's not that I have uniquely wonderful taste, it's that I am responding to something in the zeitgeist / confirmation bias.

I predict Daphne over the next few years is going to sky rocket 😆

PerspiringElizabeth · 23/11/2023 18:13

Someone saw my son’s name on his peg at nursery and used it for their new baby. It’s the risk you run when you utilise your impeccable taste 👌🏻

PortalooSunset · 23/11/2023 18:14

The fact there are "very few others" with the same name means you didn't make it up therefore your child may not be the only one they were aware of.

Does it bother your child or just you @catphone?

luw7797 · 23/11/2023 18:21

I understand the annoyance but you don’t own a name no matter how unique. Try to take it as a compliment, glass half full and all that, you can’t make the other parents change the name. Your child and this other child are unlikely to cross paths as adults and her name will still be unique.

Sage71 · 23/11/2023 18:23

Did you make it up and then have it trademarked? Since when did anyone own the rights to a name exclusively, totally ridiculous and yes YABU.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 23/11/2023 18:26

Barbie46 · 23/11/2023 17:11

Someone also did this to us, except blatantly told us they were stealing the name. Small town and someone in the same friendship group. You have every right to be annoyed. I was so upset for months. Also got torn apart on mumsnet.

Nobody "owns" a name, therefore it can't be stolen.

Honestly, I've never met anyone in real life so immature about names. What does it matter?

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 23/11/2023 18:29

I don't think this is going quite the way OP thought it would 😂

HomeschoolMum88 · 23/11/2023 18:43

My friend was in a similar situation but she laughed about it!

Lighten up.

Did you get the name from American Gothic? That was out around that time, so I’m not surprised a few sprouted up!

Gorgeous name by the way.

Edited

Omg I LOVED American Gothic! Sheriff Buuuck! Merrlyyyn! 🤣

housethatbuiltme · 23/11/2023 12:52

She maybe googled it... if you google something and none or one person comes up its likely pretty rare. Most names even rare ones will bring back lots of hits.

There was a woman on an American reality show called StarWishi... according to google it seems she maybe the only person linked to that name.

Google will only bring up stuff that is connected to the Internet. My husband works as a highly specialised data analyst. He uses a range of demographic data, especially from developing countries. It's interesting to see what is recorded, by whom and for what purpose but also where there are huge black holes in data collection- even in developed countries (therefore what is available to Google) So it's possible there are only a few people in the world with the same name as OP's child, or the example you gave, but I think it's unlikely. She will have heard it from somewhere, ergo it's likely more than 4 or 5 other people among the 8 billion people on the planet have too.

Justanothermum42 · 23/11/2023 18:57

Get a grip! It’s a name. Can you prove that she ‘obviously copied it’ from you? Even if she did, why are you being annoyed?! Be flattered that she liked your child’s name enough to use it. In my son’s year there are 4 Lucy’s (out of 50 kids). 3 of them live super close to each other (it’s a tiny village). Shall those parents also be annoyed with each other ?!

Ramalangadingdong · 23/11/2023 18:58

I have never thought about my name being unique but this thread has made me realise that I have only ever met two others. And I am not young so well done, mum.

DRS1970 · 23/11/2023 19:01

Cripes, you can't own a name. What are you planning next, copyrighting a colour, patenting a food... Move on with your life - let it go....

Buggathis · 23/11/2023 19:04

Just wow 🙈

Edinvillian · 23/11/2023 19:15

I get you! We names our daughter a very unique name, in fact we made it up. A guy from school named his the same name a couple of years later. I was fuming. It wasn't even a 'real' name. My son has a more common name and I couldn't give a monkeys if others copy it as we didn't make that one up.

Wasn't there an old film (B/W) with a little girl called Loveday?

I think David Kossoff was in it.

Or she might have been called Lovejoy . . . 🤔. I like Lovejoy.

There was a Loveday Carey Lewis in Rosamund Pilchers Coming Home. It was a book and TV adaptation though not sure about film.

I'm curious since Tiaan is a male name pronounce tee-an (like Ian with a 't') are you pronouncing it the same way?

I never seen it before so wouldn't think to pronounce Tiarne as Tiaan, I would assume it was more like Tee-are-nee (kind of like Daphne).
