bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

My baby name was 'stolen' by a family member living in the UK. I live in Ireland and the name is a derivative of an Irish bog standard name. So maybe for them it was more unusual than it is here.

Unfortunately the middle name they gave the child was the English version of the name they stole. So translated it's like for example Ricky Richard Smith or Eddie Edward Smith.

When I heard it I thought, ok they think I've great taste which is flattering but couldn't they have googled it before pairing it with the middle name?

So, out of 8 BILLION people, only a few have this name? Wow.

Passepartoute · 23/11/2023 13:54

My aunt tells us how she went through her entire school and university career with no-one else around with the same unique name as her.

Now, not so much, as the name is Eleanor.

No name is truly unique, OP.

Anetaaa · 23/11/2023 13:54

Oh that's quite funny Grin

YABU.
You don't own the name.
I moved abroad to a small village several years ago now. My name is fairly common in the UK but not here. There are now at least 7 kids in this village and the neighbouring village with my name. The first child with my name was born about a year after I arrived. I think the parents just liked the name and decided to use it. Then others followed suit.
I don't own my name and nor do the first parents in the village who called the child that.

Branwells77 · 23/11/2023 14:34

Please grow up for your child’s sake you have no rights over a name your being pathetic and it terrifies me that people like you are having children

MzHz · 23/11/2023 14:54

@catphone I don’t think there’s any point in being pissed off, it’s happened and the kids won’t see each other in the future

I get it. My son’s name is the only person I’ve ever met with it, likewise anyone who meets him. It’s cultural so while there are lots of them worldwide I’m sure, not in western world

he only ever had his first name on any tags I sewed into his clothes.

Doomscroller · 23/11/2023 14:57

I gave my daughter a name that isn't particularly popular, and she has only met one other little girl and one little boy with her name in her life. She was OVERJOYED both times to meet someone with her name.
Your child may not mind at all having others with her name.

I understand how people can feel protective over unusual names though. I used to call my daughter by nickname-only in public when she was a baby to try and avoid any other kids with her name in the same school year. I was also rather hormonal and acknowledge that was odd behaviour 😂😂

Is it Seamus James or Sean John?

AnAussieMum · 23/11/2023 15:56

So what?
Its a name.
I "stole" all 3 of my girls names
1st I saw a beautiful baby on a friends Facebook page named Amaya loved and stole it.
2nd I went to a travel agent and her name was Tiaan I loved it and stole it but spelt it tiarne.
3rd we were at a play centre and i heard a mum calling her little girl Siara so I stole that one too!
I'm a proud name stealer!

trainboundfornowhere · 23/11/2023 16:20

I think I’ll name a daughter Rhodora Marsaili Aldith Felice Olwen just so nobody copies me. I would never really name my daughter that and I can understand you feeling a little sad but theft it is not. The little girls parents may have looking for an unusual name too and liked the same one you did. Nobody owns a name.

stichguru · 23/11/2023 16:49
  1. how much did you pay to get that name?

  2. what do you call your child now her name has been copied?

  3. nothing

  4. the same as before

When someone doesn't take something that neither you you or you child own's you literally nothing to be annoyed about.

Barbie46 · 23/11/2023 17:11

Someone also did this to us, except blatantly told us they were stealing the name. Small town and someone in the same friendship group. You have every right to be annoyed. I was so upset for months. Also got torn apart on mumsnet.

But you don’t own the name (even if you made it up). It’s one of those things that you just can’t take ownership of. Personally I’d be flattered if people ‘stole’ the names of my children. One name is more unusual than the other and my son was thrilled to meet another one at Uni.

Winnipeggy · 23/11/2023 17:25

Well, you're certainly unreasonable to still be annoyed

Catza · 23/11/2023 17:27

More than anything I feel sorry for the child whose parents pick unique names. They are subjected to a lifetime of telling people their name story and how to spell it. And yes, being annoyed about someone else picking the same name is a waste of human life.

Elfandwellbeing · 23/11/2023 17:28

Surely you are messing about with this one. Jesus wept …. who has the emotion to get het up about this…. she copied me waaaaHH WAAAAHHH

Damnloginpopup · 23/11/2023 17:35

Of the 200 or so pupils in our Y11 there isn't a single Sarah, Clare or Lisa. No Michael, John or Robert either.

Who'd have thought it eh? There's some fucking bizarre names though, @and some bizarre spellings (or is it illiteracy?) of the more common 'unique' ones.

The world's gone mad I tell ya.

SnowflakeSparkles · 22/11/2023 20:46

Is it Loveday?

I really wanted to name my DD that; she was born in 2015. It was sadly vetoed by DP but I'll save it for if we have an accidental baby later in life or a female pet 😅

Wasn't there an old film (B/W) with a little girl called Loveday?

I think David Kossoff was in it.

Or she might have been called Lovejoy . . . 🤔. I like Lovejoy.

neilyoungismyhero · 23/11/2023 17:41

Get a grip

1982G · 23/11/2023 17:45

Perhaps those parents found the name in the same way you did. Names are not exclusive. This is ridiculous.

Andthereyougo · 23/11/2023 17:45

Did you copyright the name? You may have redress under the law. Speak to a solicitor, I’m sure they’d be very happy to discuss this with you for an hour at the usual rate.

emziecy · 23/11/2023 17:47

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 22/11/2023 17:23

She didn't 'take' the name though, did it? It's just a name. I know three people (who also know eachother) who called their kid Josh. Is that allowed though because it's more of a normal name?

How dare those infidels steal MY youngest son's name?! The audacity. I'm off to speak to my lawyer..... 🤣

Emotionalsupportviper · 23/11/2023 17:53

Tiredalwaystired · 23/11/2023 03:33

Did you get the name from American Gothic? That was out around that time, so I’m not surprised a few sprouted up!

Gorgeous name by the way.

Edited

It is a nice name.

It means "a dog".

There was a TV detective called Caleb Cluff in the old days of B/W telly. He was a down-to-earth Yorkshireman. I loved it.

<wonders if it is available on the Tube of You>
