bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

Completely ridiculous. How could she have copied. No one owns a name. I feel bad for kids with unusual names, a lifetime of spelling it and mispronunciation.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/11/2023 21:55

Is this the name? That would be unusual!

Tbf that is a wonderful name.

FrustatedAgain · 23/11/2023 12:16

That's how names get popular, people hear them and like them, then they use them!

Ramalangadingdong · 23/11/2023 12:16

I love the fact that it was your dd who informed you of the theft. Bless her.

MrsPCR · 23/11/2023 12:16

I hold my hands up, my daughter has quite a rare name, but it is very much copied! I met a mum through my eldest, and her sister's name is my daughter's name! Completely stole it. Had never even considered that name before she talked about her sister (who I have never met!) My friend still talks to me. She actually kind of likes it.

I just hope my friend hasn't shared her sister's name with too many other people, but no doubt they'll be 5 [name] in my daughter's year group come school, even though most people don't know a [name]. I'll be fumin' 😅

Sadandhurt23 · 23/11/2023 12:17

@VickyEadieofThigh That's what I cant work out. 🤦🏻

Notmetoo · 23/11/2023 12:21

Names are not subject to copyright. Anyone can use any name.
Why does it matter?

MusicAndPassionWereAlwaysTheFashion · 23/11/2023 12:26

Unless you have made up a name like Andreyadelila YABVU.

No one owns a name. Why eldest was once in a class with a girl with a name I had never heard of. Some expat moved back to our town from abroad and she had the same name. Apparently both mums had given it to them to be unique.

Yabu is quite unique - pretty too.

Ramalangadingdong · 23/11/2023 12:38

Gwyneth Paltrow must have been fuming when she named her dd Apple then had the unique name stolen. Now everybody has a computer with the same name.

GreyhpundGirl · 22/11/2023 19:42

I'm.a teacher. 'Unique' names often aren't unique at all. You obviously heard it from somewhere, why can't they have? Also, how do you know very few people in world have it? The UK yes, from ONS data, but the world?

She maybe googled it... if you google something and none or one person comes up its likely pretty rare. Most names even rare ones will bring back lots of hits.

There was a woman on an American reality show called StarWishi... according to google it seems she maybe the only person linked to that name.

diamondpony80 · 23/11/2023 12:56

Lol, isn't that how people choose names? They hear a name they like and use it for their own child? You don't own it.

ChilliNoodleGoodness · 23/11/2023 13:02

thats generally how names are chosen

Notimeforaname · 23/11/2023 13:09

OP you're a lunatic or this has to be a joke...

Lovemusic82 · 23/11/2023 13:10

People usually chose a name because they have heard it somewhere and liked it. She heard your DD’s name and liked it so chose it for her child? That’s what people do.

My dd2 has an uncommon name, I chose it because I went to school with someone who had the name and I liked the sound of it. I don’t get annoyed when I hear of anyone else with that name.

SoSo99 · 23/11/2023 13:12

This goes for so many things. We all like to think we're original and inventive, but in fact we're picking up on the same zeitgeist as many other people. Hence all end up doing the same thing whilst kidding ourselves that we're not following a fashion.

Turfwars · 23/11/2023 13:14

Can't believe she stole your name.

You need to log it with 101.

Inyourwildestdreams · 23/11/2023 13:19

People are insane when it comes to names IMO 😂

When I had DS (now 3), a girl from my town who was a couple of school years below me sent me a private message on social media telling me that she thought I was out of order for having not only copied her sons first name, but also his middle name 😅😂
I’d never spoken to the girl in my life and only vaguely knew who she was through other people. Had no idea she even had a child but he was 2 when my DS was born apparently.

Both first and middle names are common boys names. DSs middle name is spelled differently to hers and is directly after a family member. I now occasionally bump into her at playgroups etc as she has a second child and she is very frosty with me 😅

I really don’t see the issue myself but she ain’t happy 😂

SmellyNelliey · 23/11/2023 13:19

Stole a name lol
My DD name was once very popular! But in the 7 years of her being here we haven't heard another child with it! (Mary) and it fits her perfectly 🥰

Fmlgirl · 23/11/2023 13:22

@Inyourwildestdreams that woman sounds like a complete nutcase.

KeepSmiling89 · 23/11/2023 13:23

OP, just share the name! There are over 8 billion people in the world so I find it highly unlikely that you and the 'name thief' are the only people in the world to have chosen that name!
It's not "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii" is it?

Inyourwildestdreams · 23/11/2023 13:28

Fmlgirl · 23/11/2023 13:22

@Fmlgirl 100% 😅 When I hear a child with the same name I just think “they have good taste” 😅 but clearly she doesn’t 🙈

viques · 23/11/2023 13:29

Aw hun that is so mean of them, after all the trouble you went to to make sure your lil one had the best possible start in life. They have literally practically ruined her life now, so no forgiveness owed. I would burn down their house ( obvs not with them in it, you don’t want people to think you are crazeee batshit ) honestly babes, there’s not a jury in the country would convict you.

SurelySmartie · 23/11/2023 13:29

Did you make it up yourself of was it a name you heard from someone else?

Fmlgirl · 23/11/2023 13:30

Same. My son’s name is a bit traditional, it seems to not be popular in the mum groups. Don’t often get a reaction that it’s a nice name tbh, so when I hear about another kid with the same name I just think they have good taste as well :-)
