bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

My granddaughter started nursery aged 3 and would come home talking about someone called Syphilis - we found out later it was a little boy called Zephyrus.

Several years later - there's more of them. 🤔

Concannon88 · 22/11/2023 22:58

What is it

JulianFawcettMP · 23/11/2023 00:32

RubberyChicken · 22/11/2023 17:11

'very uncommon and unique'

It cant be both

What a stupid thing ti say. Bet it's not unique t though

JulianFawcettMP · 23/11/2023 00:36

ButtonSister · 22/11/2023 17:26

Uncommon and unique? Can't be both.

How silly. You clearly don't understand the words.

Uncommon and unique? Can't be both.

The lack of basic comprehension is driving me mad. Uncommon is not unique but unique is by definition uncommon

one of my dds is Kiley-Rae and I wd be raging if someone stole it of me.

Oh do grow up - you can't "steal" a name

theduchessofspork · 23/11/2023 00:42

catphone · 22/11/2023 17:19

It was a small place where everyone knew everyone, the parent knew of my DDs name and when she eventually had her own child she took it

What did the police say?

NewtonPulsifer · 23/11/2023 01:29

When I was born my parents thought my name was very usual, and indeed it was in our part of the country. When they told an elderly aunt in Exeter, she said “Everyone is called Newton around here” and my parents thought she was being mean, but she as right, they were. Just one of those things.

Thedogscollar · 23/11/2023 01:43

Honestly @catphone this has been done to death.
No name is unique in a planet of over 7 billion people.

Don’t mind me. Scroll on, nothing to see here.

ocarinaflow · 23/11/2023 02:34

It's always like that. This pattern (we were convinced name was impossible unique, 1 year schoolmate with that name too, more in coming years) was roughly the same for all 3 of my kids. Probably our subconscious picked it up somewhere and mistook it for originality. I bet that mother thinks you stole her kid's name too!

Hee he, this pissed me off 23yrs ago. I called my boy Caleb. Didn't know of anyone called this. He was at nursery with another wee boy and his mum had a baby and called him Caleb, I was outraged at the time, like I owned the name! Now it's just, nearly as common as Jayden, Jaxon and Chelcee, 😆

Did you get the name from American Gothic? That was out around that time, so I’m not surprised a few sprouted up!

Gorgeous name by the way.

Jumbalya0367 · 23/11/2023 08:46

I knew my daughters name wasn’t unheard of, she is 2 I just liked the name. Only recently I’m learning how popular it is at the minute….. I don’t care 😂

I did indeed, it was the name I picked for my eldest but he didn't look like a Caleb. So kept in for another 3yrs. Thanks x

Mamabear487 · 23/11/2023 11:29

Lol are you for real?

Bookkeepermum · 23/11/2023 11:34

So who did you "copy" the name from? You've obviously heard it from somewhere too.
You are being very unreasonable.

ColesCorner7814 · 23/11/2023 11:37

Well you stole it from someone! Uncommon and unique are very different. How do you know there’s not 100s of them running around in primary schools? You don’t know everyone’s name.

Glitterblue · 23/11/2023 11:37

You must have heard it somewhere so what’s to stop others hearing it somewhere and liking it? You don’t own a name.

when we named our daughter 14 years ago, we chose a name that wasn’t very common at the time but it suddenly became really popular again - it’s just one of those things. We liked the name and it suits DD, it’s classic and will suit her whatever age she is.

BlueGrey1 · 23/11/2023 11:43

I think I might be flattered

You don’t own a name

Its quite a common thing to happen,

Hereforaglance · 23/11/2023 11:45

Unless you brought exclusive rights to that name and patented it n made legal ruling no one can use it ever n every person with that name must change it for legal reasons then u have zero comebsck

wishingiwas20something · 23/11/2023 11:58

Ridiculous. Unless you invented the name yourself (doubtful), you copied it in the first instance, but no one must copy you? Sure, that’s how life works 🤷‍♀️

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 23/11/2023 12:04

Ha! Happened to my best friend. Wouldn't say the name until she was born as it was so unique. Announced the name and my cousin's little girl is called it.

Started school and there are 3 of them in the same class! 🤣 Her nose was proper put out!

I would be flattered too, most uncommon names are uncommon because they're tacky mis-spells or don't sound appealing. So if it's getting popular it must be a nice name.

dottiedodah · 23/11/2023 12:05

I understand you feeling miffed ,but as other PP have said here its not privately owned by you! Lots of names start out being unique ,but as time goes on they get more popular.Lots of ladies here are upset by another new mum pinching "their"babys name .Alas nice names will be popular !

Caleb has long been used in the U.K.! OK, not at all common in recent decades but certainly not unknown.
