bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.

Blimey OP, you’ll have to let this go or you’ll drive yourself mad. Maybe they did hear your child’s name and like it, maybe they already had it in mind before they even conceived.

I picked out two possible names for eldest, neither popular at the time. I only knew one adult with the name we settled on. Since then I’ve come across a lot of kids with this name. We used our other chosen name for DS2, and then that name and variants of it seemed to get very popular.

Is this the name? That would be unusual!

My DS is called Qwertyuiop.

It came to me one day. I don't know where I got it from. Divine intervention probably.

Anyway, so far I haven't seen any other other Qwertyuiop's at school and it's quite easy to spell. On a keyboard anyway.

My daughter's opinion on the unusual name I gave her:

lol. I know 2 Farah’s on my street. One only moved here recently, so her parents definitely didn’t copy the other.

If it's unique then you made it up - in which case, poor kid for having a made up name that they will spend their life spelling to people.

If you didn't make it up, then others might use it too.

So...say you have a daughter called "Ellalottiba"
You take her to school and a bogstandard Olivia joins her class. Olivia's mum hears there's a girl in her class called Ellalottiba and thinks "ooh, I like that name. Then asks her daughter "Olivia, how do you fancy Ellalottiba being your name now!? Great! Let's get it changed"

I grew up with a "unique ish" name and hated it. I envied the kids who multiples of their name in class or school. Great news for me is now everyone is using it. So many 0-7s with my name, it's really taken off after 30+ years of being the only one. Better late than never aye?

I've also met a few babies/ kids with what I thought were unusual names/ names I'd never heard of (in the white middle class category) and then met loads more kids with the same name. (Work with kids so hear a lot of names.)

Honestly weird unique ish names are in, which I think is nice because having one is rubbish, so at least they're all spared that.

I'd say it's a good thing. I have a very unusual name and I f**king gate it. Would have loved some people to copy it in my village instead I faced being laughed at all through school. Even as an adult people react to my name because having a unique name is stupid
