bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

Damn it, I just told people to be nice on another thread so I can't say what I want to or I'm a hypocrite 😂.

tinytemper66 · 22/11/2023 21:06

And?

Topsyturvy78 · 22/11/2023 21:06

I reckon it's Abcde pronounced Ab-ce-di. It's a popular name in the US apparently.😳

If you live in such a small place that everybody knows everybody how did it take you so long to find out another parent had copied your child’s name?

Sounds like an abscess and a cavity.

I sympathise. My dc was one of 6 with their name the year they were born. Three months later someone I knew gave their child a very similar, even less common name. I wasn't thrilled because, had things turned out as expected, that would have been 2 children in a class of 5 (rural area) with very similar names, with the friends name being the pronounciation more likely used for both. (My dc's name is easy enough to pronounce, but the other's is more expected and people seem to revert to that one if they're not thinking about it.)

As it turned out for circumstances it was nice the two did have similar names, and we've had to move away do it's not an issue any more.

MermaidMummy06 · 22/11/2023 21:24

When I gave my DD her name I'd never heard of it before finding it on ONE obscure naming site. I even checked name rankings online. Not in baby books etc.

By the time she was two the name and a similar one, were everywhere. DS's pead said she'd never heard it before but had met four with her name in the last week!

It irritates me, mostly because a similar name, spelled differently (DD's name is simple and spelt exactly as it sounds) and everyone calls her that name instead. I have the same issue and it makes me sad she'll have to constantly correct people.

Sheer lunacy over “unique” names! Think of the poor kid in 20 years time sitting in an office answering phones and having to say they’re called Rumplestiltskin or summat just cos the mother wanted to stand out from the crowd.

Duckswaddle · 22/11/2023 21:29

Haha, you loon.

Chichimcgee · 22/11/2023 21:29

@MermaidMummy06 thats always the way isn’t it. My ds had an uncommon name at the time, never heard anyone else called it and now it’s ridiculously popular. My daughter was born just before the Netflix Wednesday hype and Enid was the front runner, I’m glad I didn’t go with it or she’d be one of thousands now

Would Abscess and Cavity be for a boy or a girl?

Whiteday · 22/11/2023 21:32

@WandaWonder it's gender neutral 🤦‍♀️

Ankerdam · 22/11/2023 21:32

It's really quite sad that you appear to limit your daughter's uniqueness to her name, as opposed to appreciating she is unique in her own right as a human being.

billycat321 · 22/11/2023 21:32

If that's the biggest cause of anxiety in your life you are a very fortunate person

AmazingSnakeHead · 22/11/2023 21:37

I don't think this is too bad. One of the little boys in DS's nursery class had an absolutely beautiful name that I had never heard of before. I just loved it and DP did too. Looked it up and it is a very rare name, only a handful a year. I'd imagine there's a good chance that the boy won't meet another one his age through schooling.

If I were to have another DS I would use the name for him. Why not? I don't know this family so it wouldn't be awkward or confusing. I don't see why I would avoid using a rarer name just because I heard it first in real life instead of online.

billycat321 · 22/11/2023 21:38

I once taught a little girl called Lazuli named after the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli. Never come across it before or since.

I chose an incredibly uncommon name for my dd 25 years ago. Grace.

Really not that uncommon at all 25 years ago.

The only way to fix this op is to have a son and name him Gary, Kevin, Wayne or Nigel.

I know a 5 year old called Nigel. Its amazing !
