bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

Mitchum is a brand of deodorant …

Which is why I thought she might have heard it on a deodorant advert.

Yekaterinap · 22/11/2023 20:33

God help you if you actually had real worries.

CitizenofGotham · 22/11/2023 20:33

😁

My guess is Rexona for the deodorant name

tachetastic · 22/11/2023 20:34

Whiteday · 22/11/2023 20:31

@tachetastic is sure for men ok as a gender neutral name?

You think I'm going to opine on anything gender neutral on MumsNet? Do you think I'm looking for trouble??? 😱

WandaWonder · 22/11/2023 20:38

You must go to papers, now it has started where will it end, buying a place in the same area, shopping in the same supermarket think of the children this must not go on!

Minerbird · 22/11/2023 20:39

I have a very rare name (worldwide) but there was another one in the year below me at school, and now I work with another one haha! It doesn’t bother me.

Bouncyball23 · 22/11/2023 20:43

You don't own a name if people like it they can off course use it!!

maximist · 22/11/2023 20:45

Alan Bennett did a brilliant monologue on this subject that I haven't been able to find. It was about the more recent Jacobs and Samuels being middle-class rather than their working-class forebears - and the Gertrudes and Ednas being unlikely to make a comeback.
If anyone knows where to find it, I'd be grateful.

I remember this - was it one of the Talking Heads series? I think it ended with a man being admitted to a care home and them saying, "our first Kevin," or a similar name.

SnowflakeSparkles · 22/11/2023 20:46

Is it Loveday?

I really wanted to name my DD that; she was born in 2015. It was sadly vetoed by DP but I'll save it for if we have an accidental baby later in life or a female pet 😅

ActDottie · 22/11/2023 20:47

Lol

Keep it for a pet! 😂

Cumbrianlife · 22/11/2023 20:49

I saw a unique name recently...Destyni. Don't all rush out with your deedpolls.

jays · 22/11/2023 20:49

Whiteday · 22/11/2023 19:54

Give over! You don't actually believe that a not that common name can't be used by others.

Maybe people should get a copyright?

It would piss me off! Under the circumstances the OP gave, that would piss me off. It would piss loads of folk off in real life.

Eejitmum101 · 22/11/2023 20:49

@WhatWhereWho agree!
who do these parents think they are owning “unique” names
i grew up with a “popular “ name and it’s not that bad!!

ZoeCM · 22/11/2023 20:50

I'm genuinely bewildered by the MN obsession with having a "unique" name. People complaining that their distant cousin "stole" their child's name, or expecting their child to be the only one in the whole SCHOOL - not even the year or class - with that name... it's so odd. I was one of three girls in my playgroup with the same name (and it wasn't even a Laura or Jessica sort of name), and my parents didn't bat an eyelid. It's just a name!

waitholdup · 22/11/2023 20:50

bitchatty · 22/11/2023 17:05

Yep

and a load of other adjectives that would probably get me deleted

I'm with you

Whiteday · 22/11/2023 20:51

@jays why? You do actually think you own what ever ridiculous name you've chosen? You don't think they'll be other people as totally ridiculous as you that think "that's nice!"

Bertiesmum3 · 22/11/2023 20:53

A lady I know 30 years ago named her twins Keyan & Kelsey, since then it’s gotten quite common where I live 🤣🤣

RoseAndRose · 22/11/2023 20:54

Without knowing what the name was, it's really difficult to know if OP's expectation of rarity was well-placed. Or if it's actually quite common in many places

Or if it's a name that it's quite likely beloved grandparents might have.

Or featured in a film or on the telly - either recently or in the formative years of the parents.

trainboundfornowhere · 22/11/2023 20:54

I have an incredibly common first name (think top 5 the year I was born) and yet I was the only person in my entire schooling both primary and secondary with my name. Unless you make your child’s name up you can never guarantee a unique name.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 22/11/2023 20:56

Toottooot · 22/11/2023 17:14

Did ye trademark it min?

For a moment I read that as the name being "Trademark". Now that would be unique Grin

jays · 22/11/2023 21:01

Because it would. And no I don’t. I’m not the OP on this thread. I gave MY opinion that it would piss me off under those circumstances. I don’t had to argue my case to you. Just because I’m not taking part in a pile in here and have a different opinion to you doesn’t mean I have to justify it to you, move along and just live with the fact that someone has a different opinion, it not the end of the world.

lightand · 22/11/2023 21:03

Why didnt you choose a properly unique name, not copy someone else?

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 22/11/2023 21:03
