Teacher exposing breast.

This sounds bizarre and I think it is really. Dsd is in year 6 and they are having the sex ed programme. Anyway, this week it was all about pregnancy and birth. The teacher has just returned from maternity leave and imo went into way too much detail for 10 and 11 year olds(discussing stitches etc. dsd was very intrigued, arriving home with a lot of questions!!) but most astonishingly showed them her breast to explain how the baby feeds. Now this is nothing new to dsd per se who has seen me bf all year but I was amazed. Dh wanted to go in and complain today and I received a couple of phone calls asking me to sign a petition "We think that this teacher needs further training etc." Quite moderate in tone really. AIBU or was this teacher totally wrong?

BTW, I think a petition is entirely inappropriate. A parent needs to talk sensitively to the school and suggest that the teacher be advised that this is inappropriate behaviour.

jesuswhatnext · 12/03/2008 16:34

so babybore, will you be happy for a male teacher to show your dd how to use a condom, in reality???? it is natural to get a stiffy you know!

EiWishFor3MoreWishes · 12/03/2008 16:34

i was about to say almost that exactly soapbox i think it is inappropriate for the teacher to have showed the children her breast. if it was a man showing his penis for the purposes of explaining how it worked etc it would be classed as highly inappropriate and he would likely be sacked and prosecuted. i would be really concerned about the methods of teaching that was happening in this school if it were my DD coming home with these stories, the teacher would have been unable to show the class the methods of breastfeeding and so shouldnt have gotten her boob out and showed the class IMO i would speak to the head about it TBH

Well it's a novel way of ensuring 100% attendance I guess. She's full of the joy of new motherhood, she's not thinking quite straight (sleep deprivation, anyone?). A quiet word would do the trick, surely, rather than a petition? If she's otherwise a decent teacher (?) it would be a shame to hound her out. Breastfeeding mothers can be pretty unabashed about their boobs, she'll probably feel mortified in years to come.

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 16:34

Wonder how OFSTED would have rated the lesson LOL

wheresthehamster · 12/03/2008 16:34

Perhaps it's because I'm knackered and not thinking clearly but I can't see anything to get worked up over. Bit bizarre I agree, but more of a hoot than something to get a petition up about. I'm sure the children aren't traumatised.

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 12/03/2008 16:35

babybore, you are 'aving a laff!

To be honest I'd hate any teacher to reveal any part of their anatomy to illustrate a point. Even something as innocuous as armpit hair, to show what happens during puberty. It is a personal exposure by somebody in a position of authority.

I'm not a prude, honest!

I show the Xrays of my DH's shoulder dislocation. And I tell them they're his. Is that OK?

Cam - glad you know how I will feel in the future better than myself. Perhaps I will consult you on other matters if that's ok...

I know I would not care in 'that' sense. I'm more worried (already) about the effect of stick thin celebrities and soft-porn pop videos that objectify and degrade women, than a primary school teacher showing her boob once to demonstrate bf.

jesuswhatnext · 12/03/2008 16:38

fallen madonna, i can't think of anything more disgusting!!!

Cam · 12/03/2008 16:38

x-ray of a shoulder not the same

pukkapatch · 12/03/2008 16:38

showing your own body parts to a class full of children is innappropriate whether it is breasts, penis, or even legs. its unprofessional.

bamboostalks · 12/03/2008 16:39

This is not a wind up at all totally true. It is so weird that you would hink so but its not. I have better things to do with my time than think up bonkers stories. Just asking for opinions really as was very taken aback. Some very funny comments though and boco i laughed at your link. Opnion seems split so am glad to know that I am not the only one who finds this very odd.

Phew!

My lessons are filled with family anecdotes actually. I am fortunate to have a family who are prone to both accidents and slightly odd medical conditions.

They're less fortunate of course...

Blandmum · 12/03/2008 16:40

Is this for real?

Or is it part of the drive to get 200 posts?

If true, she is utterly insane and will have the devils own job in getting back her professional 'persona' with the kids. Totaly unprofessional.

If she did it.

Greensleeves · 12/03/2008 16:40

Sadly I think this is a wind-up, but if not I feel sorry for this teacher. I wouldn't be upset if my child had been in this class, although I think it's obvious many people would be up in arms about it. I think it's a sad indictment of our attitudes towards women's bodies that she couldn't do this very matter-of-fact and informative thing without being slated for it - but I think if this isn't a wind-up she probably WILL lose her job.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 12/03/2008 16:40

Stop being ridiculous. Showing a breast is not the same as showing a penis.

The teacher shouldn't have done it though.

Cam · 12/03/2008 16:40

babybore you're missing the fact of the professional line that the teacher has crossed

There is a professional duty of care here

FWIW my dd is 11 and if we have her friends to stay the night I am v. careful re keeping covered up at all times in front of them

I don't have a problem with what she did - but I'm not sure yet why

Maybe I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about breastfeeding and how little we see anything/how underpromoted it is - so because she is breastfeeding I think it would be interesting as a 10 year old to see breasts in a non-sexual way and maybe see some milk come out. Strictly because in our society we see breasts in the media as something entirely sexual.

I don't think this about penises and spermies however as that is a sexual thing or armpit hair for that matter because everyone has it - so just on the numbers because so few people breast feed and because breasts are so over sexualised then yes, I'm ok with what this teacher did.

I think.

Blandmum · 12/03/2008 16:41

I also use personal experience in lessons. It helps if the kids ask questions related to their own experience, today, for example they were asking how bones 'knit' together, as we were talking about bone formation.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 12/03/2008 16:41

I have a pre schooler as well as 2 at school and I don't think it is okay.
