When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

@Oliotya I know exactly where some of the local allotments are but I CANNOT get to them. I don't drive. They are too far to walk to.

You can't usually take rubbish to allotments anyway. You need the council recycling centre. Or bin your wooden spoon because you know very well that wooden spoon aren't the issue.

Needmorelego · 21/11/2023 23:47

@Oliotya the allotment was because you said I should put a wooden spoon to make compost.
I wouldn't take household rubbish there - I know that's not where rubbish goes FFS.
I also know exactly where the council run rubbish and recycling centre is but again I CANNOT get there because I do not drive and it's to far to walk to.
You are missing my point completely. We (as a country) need to recycle more. The world needs to recycle more. I agree there is far too much "stuff" in the world. I agree many of the manufacturing methods are bad. But nothing will last forever so things do need replacing from time to time. But instead of having a good a well run system of recycling things to be used again we put stuff in landfill and replace it by making even more stuff.

My daughter buys her dresses from Shein. She went to a very luxury hotel dinner party and the host said she was the best dressed there.. and everyone else complimented her on her lovely dress.
You do realise that many more items from clothes to gadgets to TVs and tech are made in China in same factories? Get over yourself and stop being a snob.

They were being sarcastic.

You're wrong. We don't need to recycle more. We need to consume less.

Jumpingthruhoops · 22/11/2023 02:11

I used to wonder this OP and was certainly a bit 🙄 about Shein when it first came on the scene. But then I'd started seeing friends wearing a variety of nice things - and 9 times out of 10 they'd tell me that's where they were from!

I was still a little sceptical about it as a business but, against my better judgement, I placed an order... it arrived within a few days and I was really happy with the quality for the prices, which are frankly insane - six or seven really lovely items for less than 50 quid! I like that styles often come in multiple colours and it all washes up nicely. In a CoL crisis, this will be a no-brainer for some people.

Oh, and the little bags the items come in, are really handy to pack things up for Vinted (so recycling, too!).

I'm not about to fill my entire wardrobe from there but I'm definitely in the 'dont knock it till you've tried it' camp when it comes to Shein.

Needmorelego · 22/11/2023 06:23

@Oliotya if we recycled what already exists then people would consume less new stuff.

Bigminnie1 · 22/11/2023 06:30

smilesup · 20/11/2023 17:46

Because people are thick. They don't give a shite about slave labour or dodgy chemicals being brought into their home or the environmental impact.
Shop on vinted if you are skint that's what lots of us do!

The problem with Vinted is that everything I have bought, bar one jumper, hasn't fitted properly or looks like shit.

Recycling is making new shit out of old shit. It's still polluting, it still uses energy. Less and better shit is the only solution.

You have to get better at picking! Go to brands you know,I often try stuff in the real shops and then look for it on vinted, and choose sellers with good reviews.

Bigminnie1 · 22/11/2023 07:08

@smilesup I know- that's such a much better idea than just buying because it looks nice. Sadly, I just don't have time to go to the shops and try on stuff.

Dinkydoo17 · 22/11/2023 07:16

Sadly it's not always possible to shop ethically when you've hardly any disposable income and children that grow out of stuff quickly. Shein is great and affordable.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/11/2023 07:17

Needmorelego · 21/11/2023 22:37

But why does all this stuff "end up in landfill" ?
Why aren't we (as a country) investing more in recycling methods?

Many )not all) customers have a "wear once then chuck" attitude but try and make themselves feel better by giving it to charity.

The charity thrm aren't able to price cheaply enough to sell on as generally the next customer will be a lot to buy similar brand new for less.

Item gets sold on to the companies who buy fabric for ragging.

Item them goes to landfill or "donated " to a impoverished country. Often this means it's dumped with a shit tonne of other clothing on a beach.

Please people - I get we need to buy stuff from time to time and don't all have the luxury of price picking.

But Shein and the like encourage so much over consumption and take fuck all responsibility for the consequences.

Feralgremlin · 22/11/2023 07:25

Probably going to upset at least 90% of people on this thread but COL is no excuse to shop from and support a company that uses forced labour and child labour, has a well documented list of labour abuses, creates clothing containing alarming levels of lead and other dangerous chemicals, and helps the planet burn in the process.

Yes, life is prohibitively expensive for a lot of people but wearing the latest fashion is not anywhere on Maslows hierarchy of needs, and there is decent clothing (free of human rights abuses) to be found in charity shops and on vinted for much lower prices than on the high street.

So many points to make here but I seriously can't be bothered. Hope you have a lovely day.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/11/2023 07:47

Hmm…some people here have never struggled financially and it really shows.

Have you been in charity shops lately? That aren’t the bargain hunting troves they used to be. Everything is only about £1-2 cheaper than the shops.

If you have a few quid left to buy your children clothes (because Tories give zero fucks about impoverished children) - and fashion May not be in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (🙄) but I can’t imagine people want their kids walking around naked. On Shein and Temu you can, unlike in charity shops, be guaranteed to find a size you know will actually fit.

Also it feels like poverty shaming - some of your middle class shops will be just as bad but many think they’re above the poor people because they shop at Edinburgh Woollen Mill not Primark.

It’s not on the shoulders of the most vulnerable to fix loopholes that allow big companies to exploit workers. It’s not on the shoulders of the everyday consumer either.

bippityboppity87 · 22/11/2023 07:56

@SurprisedWithAHorse I'm talking about clothes not pants plastic tat

Edited

Second hand is always going to be cheaper than new, even at Temu/shein prices. Especially kids clothes. I just bought a bundle of next clothes for DS7, 3 tops, 2 jumpers, 2 trousers for £12 delivered. Even shein can't beat that.
The £10 jeans that were mentioned earlier in the thread, get on Vinted, new with tags, many hundreds of pairs to choose from, less than £10 posted.
It's on everyone to make responsible purchases.

Dinkydoo17 · 22/11/2023 08:00

The judgemental, must be lovely living in your utopia shite on here is really ticking me off. There's naff all in most charity shops. I'm outa here.

We don't even have a charity shop in my town and when we did it was all crap bobbly, holey stuff from asda and primark anyway and more expensive than if you bought it new!
No one has to justify their choices to you or anyone else!
It's not your job or anyone elses on this thread to police peoples freedom of choice! You and me and everyone else is entitled to their opinion, but what's that saying... oh right, opinions are like arseholes and everyone has one!

Needmorelego · 22/11/2023 08:25

@Oliotya so if I can't recycle or buy new what am I meant to do when something reaches the end of it's life - either wears out or breaks?

UglyModernWindows · 22/11/2023 08:30

I’ve lived on very small income, had a part-time job on top of my full time job. Had about £160 of disposable income a month after bills. I’m also an immigrant so no family support whatsoever. Funnily enough I never had to go to work naked 🙄 No, I didn’t have a vast array of clothes but it was fine. Always had something appropriate to wear. Now people expect to have new stuff all the time.

The people I know who shop from Shein are ALL high income families. But they just shop, shop, shop. One said she has 42 pair of jeans yet buys more.

Z1hun · 22/11/2023 08:34

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 21/11/2023 21:24

Oh do bore off, you just can't admit that I have caught you out with your superior "I refuse to shop knowingly made in China goods" attitude!

Hun, you didn't catch me out on anything. I have a right to choose not to shop Chinese goods - you don't like that and that's your choice. Move on.

Needmorelego · 22/11/2023 08:39

@Oliotya about recycling....
A big thing last summer was many towns having school uniform exchanges. There were loads all over the country.
The one in my parents town was literally you could pick what you needed for free. Others were "pay if you can" or 50p an item.
These exchanges were all run by volunteers.
This is the type of thing that should become standard in a society. This is one thing I meant by recycling more. Facilities need to be made easier for people to be able to do this. With school uniform it's easy to do because you can drop the clothes off at your child's school as the pick up point.

wingsanddreams · 22/11/2023 08:43

It's not all plastic. There're cotton, bamboo, wood, stainless steel, and better quality plastic items to choose from. Many designs are so much better than the ones you get here. A lot of factory direct sales, which means the money goes to the factory and the workers there. Bigger brands also make their products in China. Some people feel they pay more so that it must be good for the world. But how much of that is going to the factory workers really? The profit mostly goes to the bosses in this country.
