When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

So I am assuming that you are whiter than the driven snow in your purchasing habits, and research every detail to see where your purchases are made and who are making them? If so I applaud you, but you must have more time on your hands than the average person.

I do hope you don't have, or plan to purchase, an electric car.

None of us are "entitled" to probably most of our purchases, but I still defend the right of people to spend their money how, and where, they wish without being judged by those who perceive themselves to hold the moral high ground.

Enjoy your despairing - it really isn't going to make one iota of difference!

No- I don’t think I’m whiter than white which is why I’m my post I said I count myself in the cohort of the entitled.
However Temu and Shein are taking it to a far higher level in many ways than the likes of other high street stores.
Please see my post further up. It goes far far deeper than bad working conditions and stuff shipped from China.
The consequences for more and more people using these sites (and the many more similar sites that will surely spring up Over the coming years) could be devastating and far reaching for our economy in the UK- which affects all of us.
You live in a society where the actions of others directly affect and impact you and your family. It’s up to all of us to ‘judge’ in certain situations and make changes for what we believe is right for all of us, if it affects us- which it will do if these sites are going to grow bigger and bigger.
Its no good plugging your fingers in your ears and turning a blind eye and claiming your not judging Susan and Steve next door for their Temu window stickers. Get informed about this-we should all be concerned - it goes way deeper.
I get it though. You probably don’t care because it’s not something that’s affecting you right now. By the time we wake up to this it may be too late.

Bit of a disingenuous question OP. You know the answer don't you? I mean really, you do.

It's cheap.

That's it. and you know that.

Why don't you just put it out there what you're really trying to say. Something about global consumerism and sustainability and the legacy and impact of all this throwaway tat.

You've lost most people at the faux innocent - "I wonder why....?"

I agree, @HappySunday1

It's really depressing how little thought people give to their consumption.

So? Vinted and ebay are cheap sources of pre owned clothing, as are numerous other sites.

It's laziness and self-indulgence in my opinion.

I recently lost 3.5 stone and I aim to lose. Another few stone. Sorry I didn’t keep wearing the stuff that looks like a tent or the trousers that fell down whilst I was out walking. I may only be wearing things for one season right now so I don’t want to spend a fortune. I tried vinted and can’t understand how anyone finds anything amongst all the shite that pops up. I dint have time or money to waste. Shein gives you the measurements, returns are easy, if you read the reviews you can see how items actually look. I bought 3 Sumer dresses, 1 winter dress, a few jumpers and some jeans to see me through. One dress is fantastic quality and gets compliments all the time.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 21/11/2023 02:53

It's cheap and I like their stuff.

filthypride · 21/11/2023 03:07

There was another post on here about this a few weeks ago and I recall the OP got absolutely slammed with negative comments because they said they shopped at Shein and the post got deleted.

I personally haven't purchased anything from these cheaper sites but that's only because I buy charity shop clothes.

If someone wants to use cheaper sites, it's none of my business :)

orangeginaa · 21/11/2023 03:33

None of us are perfect when it comes to this -
But what I don't get is people mourning the loss of their local high street and the number of empty shops and then buy cheap tat they don't need online. The connection between their shopping habits and their community traders (or lack of them) just isn't there in their mind.

user1477391263 · 21/11/2023 03:41

Everyone I know personally who buys stuff at these places is someone who thinks it's normal to buy clothes for this or that season, buy something new for each wedding or event, buy multiple dresses and tops each time, etc. etc.

When they say they "can't afford anything else," they do genuinely believe it, but they could afford better companies if they bloody bought less.

Ihadenough22 · 21/11/2023 04:23

Several of my friends shop on shein. One of my friends is on a limited income and wears plus size clothing. On shein can find out the material type and get the exact size of the item before ordering so she has a good idea if they will suit her. She normally order things a few times a year that work with things she already has. She said it helps her money go further as plus size items in some shops can be expensive.

I think it very easy for some people to say why do people buy on shein but with the current cost of living people have less money but still need clothes.

Oliotya · 21/11/2023 06:13

The biggest issue is how cheap it is. So people end up buying mountains of stuff that they didn't really need.
I remember a poster on a different thread fiercely defending her use of temu to buy things for her hobby. Turned out her hobby was collecting themed stuff. It's just consumerism for the sake of consumerism.

Z1hun · 21/11/2023 06:33

I agree with OP I refuse to shop knowingly made in China goods. I know its cheap but I personally don't want to contribute to a shady communist country that actively encourages concentration camps. Yes I do realise I can't help that I have to buy some things made in China but I do feel massively guilty about it.

Don't ever move to this part of the world then, as you would be hard pressed to find anything which isn't made in China. You do realise that not everything made in China is "cheap"? They make a lot of high end stuff. My dinner set is all the same brand and pattern and is a mix of Made in England, and Made in China.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/11/2023 07:55

@autumnpumpkinlattes oh those fucking cat back packs are awful. Who would think it was a good idea to cart a cat around in a bag?

I saw one of those in a local shop recently, a woman was wearing a backpack and as she turned around I saw thre plastic window with a terrified cat peering out. I was half minded to report her to the RSPCA. When did people get the idea it was ok to treat animals like accessories?

It’s come to something when questioning the use of slaves to facilitate cheap window stickers and stocking fillers is seen only as the ‘perceived’ moral high ground

I've discovered some people refuse to buy on Temu because of 'ethics' but are happy to purchase the same stuff from Amazon (just more expensive).

Temu is great if you're on a really tight budget. I helped a friend get all sorts of kitchen utensils etc for her first home from Temu. She's really pleased with them.

Frabbits · 21/11/2023 08:47

Obviously, because people value cheap shite over the massive ethical and environmental problems these sites present.

Most of the time people are buying stuff they don't need, so the argument that they have no choice but to use these sites is totally bogus.

GaggleTheGoose · 21/11/2023 08:55

I don't give a shit where people buy their stuff from. It's their money their choice.

Frabbits · 21/11/2023 09:12

People should at the least have awareness of the consequences of those choices though.

Kitchen utensils are available for cheap in any supermarket/department store/ikea, with the added benefit of not being full of untested chemicals. Nobody needs utensils from temu.

My friend has to use one to take her cat to the vet as it refuses to go into its cat box but happily climbs into the backpack with the big air holes. She carries it on her front and believe me her cats are loved more than most children. The vet thought it was a good idea as dealing with a stressed out older cat was not nice for any party involved. It climbs into the backpack and settles in nicely. It’s only ever for vet trips.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/11/2023 09:47

Yeah vets is fine. This owner was going shopping with her poor petrified cat in a backpack. Not good.

I know that not everything from China is cheap. Its the slavery that china endorses as a whole that makes me morally object to their products. There is a website called not made in China which I use to avoid buying things made in China. And when I referred to cheap I was referring to temu and shein... which part of the world are you referring too. I have no intention of moving from the UK to China. And good for you, glad you enjoy your dinner set.

ToffeePennie · 21/11/2023 09:58

Because if you properly look there’s some actual bargains to be had.
for example this year my youngest child wanted colouring pens and colouring books for a birthday gift. I managed to get 5 nice books, a pack of 106 pens and they all fit into a neat case for £4.
For Christmas I have bought the scratch-cards they sell. You can write anything you want into them so we’ve put things like “popcorn and film night (date)” “you choose the park (date)” so my children will be able to have the excitement of scratching off their cards and seeing what treats they have on different days of the year!
