Re-watching Buffy and Angel ……

I used to love those shows and had a huge crush on Angel. But seriously rewatching now:

  • men smacking women around. Angel beating up a pregnant Darla
  • Angel obviously a lot older than Buffy and climbing in to her 16 year old bedroom…..
  • Fred is annoying as hell with her babbling
  • What happened to Wesley’s English accent in Angel?
Not sure the show would be as well received now!

I don't think men smacking women around is too much of an issue since they both have vampire strength anyway. It's kinda the point of Buffy that the woman is strong.

The age difference is a bit 🤔. Not even taking into account the fact that Angel is 200 odd years old I think he was about 26 when he was turned so already too old for a 16 year old!

Fred was sooooo annoying!

I guess as Wesley's character evolved he dropped the accent a bit.

I suppose yes it would not be received well nowadays however that's probably why modern TV is so shit! I still love it tbh, especially Buffy season 1-3.

Buffy season 2 and Angel season 2 were the best ones. Loved the Pylea episodes
Angel ending: crap

Yes I would agree and an absolute travesty what they did to Cordelia!

Celia24 · 19/11/2023 19:58

I think the show has held up pretty well compared to others of it's time like Charmed.

If you haven't already you should give the new podcast series a listen. Charisma definitely gets a decent storyline to make up for some of the crap of the past!

Aaron95 · 19/11/2023 20:00

It's not men smacking women around. They are vampires or other creatures with supernatural strength. Also the main character is a woman who is capable taking on anything male or female, which is sort of the point of the show.

Yes the age difference is creepy as hell. He's 200 years old, she's 17. But that is sort of the point. The relationship is not healthy. This is explored in season 2 and doesn't end well.

Throwawaytoast · 19/11/2023 20:03

Oh you're making me want to re-watch them all now!

I'll never forget that episode in Angel where Buffy came and she had some kind of spell on her (I think?) where she'd forget what happened or something. Gosh it's been so many years I can't remember the story line, but essentially she kept saying "I won't forget" to Angel after they'd had an amazing weekend or something.... and then she forgot! That episode used to give me wet eyes.

Are they on any streaming platforms?

I thought the Angel ending was great, particularly given that it was rushed due to cancellation.

Season 4 of Angel was absolutely terrible though.

FrankWelker · 19/11/2023 20:07

It’s on Disney +
I’m watching it to death
Angel bulked out a lot as the series went on and wore horrible clothes!!
Angel became human in that episode. But got it reversed when he realised Buffy would fight the fight alone.
I liked Lindsey Macdonald as well

Omg yes. That episode was so heartbreaking, Angel just had to go on and Buffy had no idea! I think they’re on Disney +?

Maybe the show wouldn’t be made now but it’s wonderful. Am looking forward to rewatching the lot with my kids. Buffy is still my hero

incywincyspiders · 19/11/2023 20:11

Buffy is one of the only 90/00s shows that does hold up rewatching it now IMO

CharlieBoff · 19/11/2023 20:13

The older I get (and the more times I rewatch) the more I start identifying with Giles and his exasperation with everyone! And Xander is a bellend! I actually loved the ending of Angel, the bit with Wes broke my heart, but yeah, they screwed Cordelia over big time!

Yes Charmed does not stand up at all! The way they have Alyssa Milano half naked all the time is a bit grim when you rewatch.

The battles are so weak as well!

I rewatched them both with my youngest dd when she was 13. It was like watching them again for the first time, I'd forgotten how absolutely obsessed I used to be with them when they aired. And also how much I used to fancy the pants off DB! Blush He's definitely still got it!

DD (now 17) also became obsessed and is now such a huge Buffy fan. Grin

junbean · 19/11/2023 20:15

I never watched it the first time around but my 13yo daughter decided to recently. We made fun of it the whole time and she didn't want to watch any more! It was cringey on so many levels.

Omg yeah one of my favourite episodes , Angel was turned human by demon blood. He ends up going to the oracles who turn back time so he can kill the demon before it turns him human. Angel is the only one who keeps the memory of what happened.

return2sender · 19/11/2023 20:19

I was obsessed with Angel.

Gunn was a firm favourite.

I used to have the hots for David Boreanaz but see him in a different light now.

Connor was a pain in the arse - what was the point in him!

Oh God I feel like I blocked out the memory of Connor! 🤣

return2sender · 19/11/2023 20:21

He was such a weasel!

And Gru 😂😂😂

Friendfoe1 · 19/11/2023 20:25

David Boreanaz was the first boy on my bedroom wall 🥰 I still love watching re-runs of Buffy. Becoming part 1&2 are my favourite episodes.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/11/2023 20:32

There's a rewatch podcast you know...

CyberCritical · 19/11/2023 20:36

I love David Boreanaz, he was fab (and hot) in Bones too.

Best Buffy episodes is difficult because there are many good episodes

  • Hush (the silent one with The Gentlemen)
  • Once more with feeling (musical)
  • Graduation day (when the whole school fought with her)
  • Beer bad (when Buffy turns cave girl)

The best Angel episode is when he turns into a puppet 😂

StampOnTheGround · 19/11/2023 20:42

David Boreanaz was hot as angel, but aged even better and was hotter in bones 😍

StampOnTheGround · 19/11/2023 20:43

You're also making me want to re-watch!

Lostinbrum · 19/11/2023 20:52

I rewatched all of buffy a few years ago. Angel never did it for me now or back in the day when i was a kid watching it but my god I became a huge Spike fan when I rewatched them all again.

The one where Buffy finds her mum having passed away was heart breaking and had me in floods. Hush was terrifying as a kid and was still very creepy watching it as an adult.

I think it's aged pretty well and it's great it portrays a strong female lead who still has vulnerabilities and makes mistakes. Never really got into Angel but I'm not a fan of DB

PurpleCar02 · 19/11/2023 20:55

I think it has held up fairly well compared to other shows from the same era. Riley could start a parade with all his red flags though!
