Re-watching Buffy and Angel ……

FrankWelker · 19/11/2023 19:39

I used to love those shows and had a huge crush on Angel. But seriously rewatching now:

  • men smacking women around. Angel beating up a pregnant Darla
  • Angel obviously a lot older than Buffy and climbing in to her 16 year old bedroom…..
  • Fred is annoying as hell with her babbling
  • What happened to Wesley’s English accent in Angel?
Not sure the show would be as well received now!

I had the entire collection of Angel on vhs tapes. That's how old I am. 😁

So did I! Grin

My favourite Buffy episode was 'Once More with Feeling'

My favourite Angel one was all the ones with Quinn in - I loved him. The actor has sadly died Sad

return2sender · 19/11/2023 21:05

And I loved Cordelia's ghost in her apartment 😂

SarahShorty · 19/11/2023 21:06

I have both Buffy and Angel, Bones, Officer Down (a movie that didn't do well at the box office) and SEAL Team.... yes, I still have a crush on David Boreanaz. I can't help it! The man is hot!

FrankWelker · 19/11/2023 21:11

Lorne actor has also died 😞
The Pylea episodes were my favourite

Yeah, Andy Hallett. I don't know exactly what happened but I do know he was in hospital for a really bad tooth infection, allegedly the infection spread to his brain.

Edit: Completely wrong. He died from cardiovascular disease.

And Glenn Quinn, aka Doyle, I believe he overdosed on heroine.

May they both RIP.

SauronsArsehole · 19/11/2023 21:17

But wasn’t that the whole point of angels character and their story arc Across the whole series. He is a vampire and a monster. the whole turning into a monster after having sex with buffy for the first time is also a huge fear of most teen girls and we’ve all had that man being Prince Charming just after a shag then becoming an arsehole. It was a great but painful story.

angel just could never fight his nature for her and keep his soul even though she did love him and vice Versa. so it was always doomed. Love wasn’t enough for either of them. A tough lesson

the same with spike, he did what angel couldn’t do. He became the better man but buffy just didn’t love him.

take out the supernatural stuff there’s a whole lot of real life moral shit we women have dealt with right there.

FrankWelker · 19/11/2023 21:19

Doyle : drugs overdose
Lorne: cardiomyopathy after dental infection
both were great in it
Charisma Carpenter has aged spectacularly well!
Xander has had trouble with drugs/alcohol
Willow and Wesley got married in real life
I’ve so got back in to it!

My sons GF hadn’t seen any Buffy , so they've just watched the lot ! The week before last we all went to see spikes one man show , Buffy revisited I think . It was brilliant! 7 seasons in 70 minutes

Bigbirthdaycomingup · 19/11/2023 21:24

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the other slayer Faith. Her episodes were my favourites. First rule of slaying... don't die.

crankit · 19/11/2023 21:27

I loved series 5 with glory

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 19/11/2023 21:27

Can anyone give more info about the podcast- name/ what it’s about etc. is it a continuation of the story.

I think the problematic parts are fairly standard for a TV show of that era.

Figgygal · 19/11/2023 21:30

Another one who had them on chunky vhs boxset

God I loved buffy, angel less so as hated the Connor/jasmine season but that last season with spike was glorious. I still cry at the episode where Doyle died - "is that it? Am I done"

cakewench · 19/11/2023 21:30

I loved Buffy. I re-watched several seasons over lockdown. I had to stop at the Spike season 😒But I might re-re-watch and see how I feel about it. I suspect I'll still dislike it (even more now as an adult, I remember thinking it was weird and creepy how that one season just turned into them banging all the time, but it's going to be even more obvious to me now as an adult that it was Joss Weadon wanting to watch SMG in those situations 😖creeper.

Five by five!

I liked Faith too.

Xander had done some smaller acting roles, he had a repeat part in Criminal Minds for a while.

ShadowCipher · 19/11/2023 21:34

we needed more of the Initiative program and just how much the govt would know about all the demonic going ons.

Figgygal · 19/11/2023 21:34

Buffy favourite episode was the wish - I can still replay those last 5 minutes in my head music and all.

ShadowCipher · 19/11/2023 21:36

i never understood why Giles got mad with willow when willow basically became all powerful with the magics, i mean without practice, how can one master the magics,

CyberCritical · 19/11/2023 21:37

Oh for goodness sakes, just realised I haven't mentioned the wonderfulness that is Drusilla, so brilliantly odd.

"Ooh. I'm ringing. Do you hear it? I'm ringing all over!"

"I met an old man. I didn't like him. He got stuck in my teeth."

TriceratopsRocks · 19/11/2023 21:53

Lol, I just spotted this thread while actually watching Buffy 🤣 I'm currently working my way through them all again (for about the 4th time). I'm up to Buffy season 4, and am now watching that and Angel together, mostly alternating Buffy and Angel episodes, but using a guide to get them in the right order so the crossover episodes work well. Never watched them like this before. Actually, I never even got to the end of Angel before, as last time I tried it was removed from the streaming service I was watching it on before I'd finished it. I'm really looking forward to season 5 as a Spike fan who's never seen it.

Throwawaytoast · 19/11/2023 21:55

I love this thread! Sorry if it's already been mentioned but remember Darla?! I used to love her!

Never did like Riley.

Noleafclover1 · 19/11/2023 22:02

'Bad Candy' was my favourite Buffy episode - something to do with chocolate bars making the adults act like teenagers. And Giles shagged Buffy's mum on the bonnet of his car Blush

TriceratopsRocks · 19/11/2023 22:09

Band Candy was excellent! There were so many great episodes though. Seasons 2 and 3 were my favourite, but I loved the musical episode. I went through a stage of listening to the soundtrack in the car on my way to choir practice (a 45 min journey so it fitted nicely). After about 2 months of listening to it every week, I realised I may be a little obsessed 🤣

TheIsleOfTheLost · 19/11/2023 22:13

It was wonderful at the time and now it is of its time. Buffy was so groundbreaking in showing the power of women and lots of things that came after were possible because of Buffy. But there were some pretty big problems that we didn't notice at the time. Mostly due to Joss Whedon being a closet misogynistic controlling arsehole. I never understood how the watchers were so wealthy, yet the slayer had to fight for free and be repeatedly punished. Charisma Carpenter's character ended up so bad as he was annoyed that she got pregnant in real life. I didn't know much about California in the 90's, but I am pretty sure the racial balance is waaayyyy out. I love individual episodes still, but can't imagine it being written that way now.

PurpleCar02 · 19/11/2023 22:23

Something Blue was my favourite, when Spike and Buffy got engaged 😂
