A friend recommended it. Have listened a few times. Just seemed to be endless discussions about stopping the small boats. Presumably this is a hard right leaning Station?

Have you watched Andrew Doyle's Free Speech Nation @Moonwatcher1234 ?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 18/11/2023 01:18

Never seen it and have no plans to do so.

brokenhearted2 · 18/11/2023 07:13

I always knew it as a hard right propaganda channel. Bit like Fox News but less glossy. But I'm confused by Alastair Stewart, Stephen Dixon, Anne Diamond and Dan Wootton being presenters. Have I misread them ?

I'd say Andrew Doyle and whoever is on his show (he always has 2 comedians as a guest panel, different ones each week, but recurring) and all his guests, tend to be basically left wing. Other shows have more right wing presenters, OR not noticeably leaning towards either. I think it's a good thing to have a balance, and I like the fact that the presenters CAN state their real opinions.

lljkk · 18/11/2023 07:53

From what I can figure out ,the Doyle programme is debate, people being opinionated. I watched a clip on Youtube. It was only funny if you enjoy getting riled. The strapline was something like "Isn't this infuriating!" So the point of it is to tap into anger?

Fox News gets away with it's worst programme because they are classed as entertainment (eg Hannity) not news so no pretence of neutrality. Entertainment that is about the audience getting angry.

Why are folk so interested in other people's opinions and keen to get angry?

Dull.

I must be very thick wankery and right wing then as I don't mind it

I quite like Kate and Ben
Can't stand Susannah
Love to see Tory boy and Sunderland man arguing
Always hope Ranvir will divulge details of her toy boy
Quite like watching the vegan sausage roll arguments

I do not of course look at it as a serious balanced political information base but I look elsewhere for that

Yes, you must be.

Shelby1981 · 18/11/2023 10:17

It's basically the Daily Mail on tv isn't it?

LakieLady · 18/11/2023 10:24

I think they have a damn cheek including the word "news" in the name of the channel, when it's just a load of narrow-minded individuals expressing their opinions.

The actual news content on there is minimal.

ClareBlue · 18/11/2023 10:27

Why not watch it and form your own opinion

Halllooo · 18/11/2023 10:31

It’s trying to be the Fox News for the U.K. - so instead of the presenters pretending to be impartial or telling both sides of a story it’s very much right wing. And the news anchors spout their opinions on stories

I watch it sometimes to remind myself how lucky we are to have the BBC ( despite its faults) and other news channels that at least present facts rather than opinions and acknowledge that there may be more than one viewpoint.

aThe BBC did a small boats story, showed the facts, had local people commenting who were very much against immigrants but also had someone from a charity and the police on explaining why small boats happen and why they aren’t breaking laws.
GB news the same day - rant rant rant WHY do ‘t the police arrest them, why don’t the Navy intercept them, WHY are they all men - who are probably sex attackers- WHY Britain

  • on and on without actually answering any of the questions posed. which they could have answered by actually interviewing a police officer or someone from the charities who support refugees
avocadotofu · 18/11/2023 10:36

It speaks to a certain demographic and is biased. It's not my cup of tea!

Fantasyanswer · 18/11/2023 10:53

MockneyReject · 17/11/2023 20:11

I suppose it's easier to dismiss anything outside of your own echo chamber, than it is to actually listen.
Dame Jenni Murray is not a Nazi. Honestly. Neither are any of the other feminists who've been given a platform on GB News.

Yeah.

I wonder how many of the posters hear shouting ‘racist, thick bigots’ have actually watched much GB news? Or if it’s just that their mates have said it’s like this and they are just parroting that?

I’ve not seen much but have watched a fair number of interviews and discussions on GB news and I don’t recognize the description of it from posters here. So it’s certainly not all like people say.

To be honest I find the name calling and polarization on this thread depressing. It’s not good for society to be like this. It’s not good to dismiss groups of people with vicious name calling rather than engage with their arguments. I mean, that’s one of the reasons I like Andrew Doyle on it.

Like pp I too am a former hunt sabber, left wing feminist, gay rights activist with two masters degrees so so am certainly not the demographic that posters here think watch GB news.

Maybe some posters could consider that the strength of language with which one abuses one’s ‘opponents’ is no measure of the rightness of one’s opinion? In fact, I rather suspect there’s an inverse correlation going on there.

Jumpingthruhoops · 18/11/2023 10:59

A channel with airhead right wing presenters who cater for the airhead right wing market.

As opposed to a channel with airhead left wing presenters who cater for the airhead left wing market? Like basically ALL of the mainstream media! 😫

(FYI: I don't align nyself with either)

Halllooo · 18/11/2023 11:13

I thought you were about to reveal Suella's new gig - fully expecting this.

Yes I am too

brokenhearted2 · 18/11/2023 11:17

@MockneyReject @Fantasyanswer for me it's more that I have limited time to watch anything so choosing to watch a show which revels in shoutiness and angry debate just doesn't appeal to me no matter what side of the political spectrum the people might be on. It's just not my kind of show.

Moonwatcher1234 · 18/11/2023 11:41

to the poster asking if I’ve watched Andrew Doyle’s free speech nation, yes, I have. Still think the channel is a hotbed of rabid populism designed to appeal to people’s basest instincts.

Exactly. They are a news channel up to the point where OFCOM are looking at them for many breaches of impartiality and then suddenly they are not a news channel but a series of current affairs shows

They are a joke

User135644 · 18/11/2023 11:49

Funded by hard right hedgefunders so it's a mix between the The Sun newspaper and The Telegraph on TV. Gives its predominantly Conservative voting Boomer viewers the same echo chamber they get from their newspapers.

Echo chambers don’t just exist on one end of the spectrum.

The media spans a range and you’ll get similar at the other end

They do but there's hardly a left wing equivalent to GB News. Right wing media is more prevalent because there's always big money (billionaires/hedgefunds/rich tax dodgers) looking to buy influence for Conservative interests.

Therefore they subsidise huge losses and can get big name right wing politicians and commentators on big salaries. The left don't have that.

I don't think any of those things make you immune from turning into your parents at some point though, in fact I'd say the most politically outspoken youngsters are the furthest swinging back adults because their rebellion was born of contrariness and never conviction.
