Rwanda plan

AdamRyan · 16/11/2023 23:05

Was just reading Suella Bravermans thoughts on how to make the Rwanda plan work, which involve sending staff there to review claims and pulling out of all human rights and refugee conventions.

The plan has cost £140m to Rwanda so far, plus £££££ in legal fees and so far we've sent no-one and found out its illegal. I'm very baffled as to why the government are pursuing it, I keep hearing that "most people" support it. So I thought I'd ask:

IABU: It's a priority as it will deter immigration and the government should spend whatever money and time it takes to deliver this

IANBU: The government should focus time/money on other priorities instead.

Friday it will be 2 years since 33 people drowned in the freezing water of the Channel.

Haven’t rtft but can guess same misconceptions on French solving it or easier processing fixing it.

Things will get harder not just here. The Netherlands elections latest to show the shift.

I think it is interesting that some European countries are electing more right wing governments at a time when the UK is desperately trying to get rid of its version.

Yes Gert Wilders finally gets traction: the Netherlands is challenging the EU imo

Stomacharmeleon · 23/11/2023 11:17

@jgw1 we say that but getting rid of the tories is never straightforward and even now after everything that has happened I don't think it's a done deal.

EasternStandard · 23/11/2023 11:19

We won’t last long as an outlier if EU continues to swing right, which is likely to inevitable

We will be a higher choice for migration and maybe five years that can do a fair bit of damage, but it won’t last, we’re not that different (although mn shows the push back quite well).

We have a strong broadcaster which will see threat to values and push against it, but media on the right will rise

I said it ages ago, lots of insults blah blah, now EU is showing what I meant. It will get harder not easier. Buckle up buttercup is my view.

DuncinToffee · 23/11/2023 11:20

The Netherlands voting for this far right party is utterly depressing as is the rise of Islamophibia.

Sending refugees to Rwanda will not change that.

Wilders may not even get into Govt....let alone become PM.... he has also said that whilst his election promises were to close borders etc, he now willing to compromise.. oh really!

Much like Meloni in Italy, rhetoric is one thing, delivering on unrealistic promises, quite another.

Anyone still going on about stopping boats...... either here or in the Med, has to accept it can only be done with force and that means deaths.

Which values are that?

@Alexandra2001 - yes can he build a coalition is an interesting question. I note that he has moderated quite a lot during the election, potentially in anticipation

Yes, look at the % vote he got? about 25% of the total number of seats.

You can ascribe them as you wish or look them up

Not really up for quote ping pong with you

My overall view stands. EU will shift right and we may get Labour but it will not stop the incoming pressures.

I doubt we are so different to the rest of the world on this

And those that can’t see it will find a need to limit their world view further.

Germany AfD also rising

Germany bewildered about how to halt the rise of the AfD

The far right’s rise is sending shock waves through the country’s political landscape.

bombastix · 23/11/2023 11:32

@Alexandra2001 - it's an interesting one. The UK has the Conservative Party which historically absorbs more extreme right wing arguments and effectively coalesces that element which works for FPTP.

The Netherlands requires formal coalitions. Wilders will soft peddle on lots of things to try and get there, imo.

DuncinToffee · 23/11/2023 11:34

@EasternStandard

It's not playing quote ping pong asking you to clarfy which values you are referring to.

Alexandra2001 · 23/11/2023 11:44

So what if Europe goes more to the right?

What in practical terms can they do about cross Channel/Med migration?

Migration has increased in Italy under Meloni & has trebled under the Tories ... its all talk.

bombastix · 23/11/2023 11:56

I agree. Unless there are legal changes within the EU, then simply nothing will happen.

However, it is interesting from the perspective of the Netherlands as a society.

I don't believe in media rising or whatever. The interesting question is whether the extreme right can moderate their message, not get it broadcast more effectively.

EasternStandard · 23/11/2023 12:00

‘Nothing will happen’

Good thing people are posting on mn not in anyway recorded for posterity (beyond an mn username anyway)

Latest numbers on the asylum backlog. It's baffling why so much money and energy is being spent on Rwanda

BBC

Asylum backlog falls

We've been reporting on the headline net migration data - that is, the difference between people arrving in the UK, and leaving.

But the data also shows that the asylum backlog has fallen slightly – at the end of September there were 165,411 people waiting for a decision on their asylum claim.

That is a drop from 175,457 at the end of June 2023.

The number of cases in the so-called “legacy backlog” – which Rishi Sunak promised in January he would abolish by the end of the year – stood at 39,668 at the end of September.

This number relates to asylum claims made before June 2022.
It is also worth noting, that in the past three months, while the government cleared 28,202 cases from the prime minister’s target so-called “legacy” backlog, the number of “flow” cases – claims made after the end of June 2022 – rose by 19,329.

bombastix · 23/11/2023 12:13

UK migration has just hit a record high of 672,000 today.

Many congratulations to the Conservatives and their many plans of action on this matter for the last decade.

EasternStandard · 23/11/2023 12:32

It’s not heard to get.

EU is shifting right. To the far right in some cases

This is due to migration pressures which will continue to increase.

I doubt we’ll be outliers, for long anyway.

Plus I couldn’t give a shit if not up to your erudite standards of a grunt of ‘eh’ 😬

It’s still what’s happening

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 23/11/2023 12:36

it is ridiculous to characterise immigration concerns as a left/right issue. Have a Google about Denmark.
