To be genuinely shocked by the apparent illiteracy of Andrea Jenkyns?

Have we really reached the point where it is acceptable for a senior MP to publish a serious (presumably) document that is barely legible?! It's not a text or a tweet or a Mumsnet post for goodness' sake. It reads as though she spoke it into her phone and hoped for the best. If this is what passes for communication nowadays, no wonder people struggle to connect and constantly misunderstand each other.

Why are some posters' fonts going all weird?

It was very sobering to think that politicians of this low calibre who absolutely disgraced the position they hold over Brexit could actually return to power.

I assume the YC in the rest of your quote is Yvette Cooper? Yes, how would she ever measure up against the intellectual heavyweights of Jonathan Gulllis, Lee ‘30p’ Anderson, Andrea Jenkyns, Suella Braverman,
Mark Jenkinson, Chris ‘failing’ Grayling and Trudy Harrison. The cabinet is made up of such deadbeats that Rishi had to draft in David Cameron 😅

But they ARE the cabinet, she is not, dont you understand my point, they read the public mood, she didnt and that is why she is not in government, she and her cronies thought they were ABOVE the will of the voters and that is everything that is wrong with modern politics and the modern world - "Oh no, I don`t like what other people think, lets just change that!"

Coldcaller · 14/11/2023 18:44

I think this post is not a impartial political one but is a bashing based on political tribalism. The posters must be waiting with baited breath then to see what sort of grammar comes up in the writings of the Rt Hon MP for Ashton- Under Lyne !

For the record i struggle with grammar and punctuation due to un- diagnosed at the time SPLD and Autism . However, I do have a Degree albeit a 2:2 due to no doubt the ignorance of those marking my work on my poor grammar rather thn the content. I also went to a grammar school from 11-18.

Coldcaller · 14/11/2023 18:45

Than the content.

RunningUpThatBuilding · 14/11/2023 18:46

In today's climate of AI and various online grammar tools there really is no excuse for churning out such a letter.

Mikimoto · 14/11/2023 18:47

Maybe she went to school with Rayner?

Maybe they only went to Grammar School?

Crikeyalmighty · 14/11/2023 18:49

@CrashyTime I totally disagree with you on that . If we went along with what many voters wanted (especially many over 65s) then we would have conscription, death penalty and anyone claiming unemployment regardless of circumstancesmade to work for it -- ignoring the fact of course that they did none of these, had full grants, non contributory pensions etc.

Going along with simply what the public want 'in that moment of time' is madness.

Yorkshirelass04 · 14/11/2023 18:50

It reads as contemptuous to me.

Like something written in a huff to demonstrate that no, she's not going to write it properly with grammar and everything. Bit like slamming a bedroom door.

LOL, unless they had voted Remain, then there would have been radio silence from YC etc., "Best of Three" only applies if you lose it seems?

cardibach · 14/11/2023 17:10

You would be wrong in thinking that. Spelt is a grain. Spelled is the past tense of the verb to spell (though spelt is becoming more accepted)

spelt is the traditional British English spelling.

minou123 · 14/11/2023 15:25

It isn't great.

I understood what she was trying, and failing, to say, but she really should have asked someone to proof read it.

As the former under Secretary of State for Education, I give her a D-. Poor, needs to try harder.

Wow, you're the former under Secretary of State for Education?! Do tell us more.

😁 bravo.

Luckily I'm not writing a no confidence letter.

Just fart-arsing about on mumsnet.

pollymere · 14/11/2023 19:00

It reminds me of kids who don't really know how to write letters but are trying to get a 5 for GCSE.

It was terribly written but weirdly contained sibilance and plosive as well as a rhetorical question.

This whole statement is wrong, there was a festering division in the Tory party and the country over Europe for decades, the voter turnout for the Brexit vote was in line with all time historical highs, no way that a death penalty referendum would ever see the light of day in the modern UK IMO, the numbers and interest are just not there.

Karwomannghia · 14/11/2023 19:03

She should have slept on that before sending it (not literally).

anotherside · 14/11/2023 19:03

The funniest but is saying they need to stop “Starmer’s socialist cabal”. Starmer couldn’t be more establishment if he tried. Ludicrous as it is, the fact that she even dares to call him socialist shows just how batshit crazy right wing some of the Tory Party has now become.

Mavissdaviss · 14/11/2023 19:03

Surely she’s dictated it to someone junior and someone forgot to do any proof reading? Or perhaps she wants to appear as scummy as many of her voters. Worked for Trump.

StarlightLady · 14/11/2023 19:07

The grammar is awful but her logic is worse still.

If you know that you have a weakness in something, which she claims to excuse how badly written her letter is, then surely you get someone to assist?

catsanddogsandrabbits · 14/11/2023 19:11

It annoys me when people say "But it's clear what she meant". What they mean is "I believe I understand".

Often in these situations it transpires that different people understood slightly different things - and some misunderstood completely.
It's already evident that some people have understood her abilities, tone and character to be other than what she seems to have intended by the method she has used.

The point about language is it is a means of communication. So being clear is important. And if it doesn't matter - and next time you find you didn't quite realise that XXXX or YYYY when you signed a rental agreement, a credit card application or bought an insurance policy, then you'll maybe see why.

GotNewHair · 14/11/2023 19:16

It’s dreadfully written, and as such will be marvellous fodder for deconstruction whether by wits or language students.

She is known locally for being both a bit stoopid and with an over inflated sense of self. Certainly her impulse control and proof reading skills are shocking.

Everanewbie · 14/11/2023 17:36

@donquixotedelamancha hopefully the attached explained what the fuck I was on about.

As a card-carrying member of the apostrophe police, I'd agree that that's an absolute shocker of a tweet.

But there's a difference between a tweet (are they always going to be called tweets? are they ever going to be known as xxxs?) and a formal letter of resignation, printed on headed notepaper and signed in ink. In the unlikely event that anyone ever writes Dame Andrea's biography, this would be a key document referred to in the record. Ministerial resignation letters are a big and permanent deal, especially the ones which go beyond the bland "honour to serve, more time with family, will continue to support from the back benches" and put the boot in publicly.

My Year 6 class assessed it today with the writing moderation guidelines and SPaG programme of study. Our opinion is that she does not achieve age related expectations for Year Six!

Now this has made me smile. I wish you’d taught my kids.

But giving the middle finger to crowds outside Downing Street is really classy, right?

Well to be fair a baying mob were shouting abuse at her, which she says had been going on for years and included death threats.

She didn't call the majority of the voting population "scum".

Tories are not “the majority of the voting population”. Do you not understand the UK’s first past the post system? This Tory party did not have the majority of votes.

Considering everything from the past 13 years, I am amazed anyone still supports them. How disappointing.
