Air bnb owner ott or do we deserve to be chucked out?

We were forced out of our house due to a water leak in the house. The insurance company said we had to move out due to the severity of the work.

A bit of a nightmare for us as we have a large dog. He’s been called a wonderfully mannered dog by a qualified behaviourist outside the house who really doesn’t care about people/other dogs. But he is a breed used for guarding and therefore very barky at home (we have a command that gets him to be quiet but it doesn’t stop the impulse to bark initially). Not to make excuses, we were working on this with the behaviourist pre-pandemic but our progress stalled so we just manage the situation. Ie we have gates all around our house/garden, don’t allow strangers and the dog to meet inside the house (he’s totally fine with people when they are not on “his” property). Our house is basically Fort Knox and only DH and I are here so it’s all pretty easy to manage.

We told the air bnb owner that please tell the cleaner not to enter house or garden without telling us as dog will run up and bark at strangers. He agreed. We explained the situation and he said he understood.

Yesterday pm, cleaner comes into the garden when I was playing footy - she was fetching something from shed. Dog ran towards her and barked. I gave the recall command which worked initially but then my dog ran back to cleaner and barked. It’s no doubt intimidating. After 20 ish secs dog was in the house and I apologised. Recall is not full proof hence why we never rely on it. We would never have found an Airbnb where we were not assured we would be informed of any person entering the property.

Owner has messaged now saying the cleaner won’t return whilst we are here and that means we have to leave as the owner is not ok with the house not being maintenanced.

Cleaner has visited 4 times without incident as the right procedures were followed.

Who is being unreasonable?

Owner is not happy have an untrained dog in his property.

Dacadactyl · 12/11/2023 19:28

While I have sympathy with your situation, tbh it sounds like you can't control your dog.

I think YABU to expect an airbnb owner to be able to remember to tell you every single time someone comes to the house, just because your dog isn't properly trained.

DoktorPeppa · 12/11/2023 19:28

The cleaner has a right to feel safe at their place of work, which they obviously don't. They shouldn't have to make prior arrangements to move around

I'm with the airbnb owner on this

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 19:28

Owner was aware of how dog reacts to strangers.

Air BnB is in the right here. She can't do her job.

PrimalOwl10 · 12/11/2023 19:29

You need to house your dog elsewhere the owner is not happy having your dog there.

DoktorPeppa · 12/11/2023 19:29

Owner was aware of how dog reacts to strangers.

Yes but they weren't aware that their cleaner wouldn't be happy with it

hotcandle · 12/11/2023 19:30

I'm sure the Airbnb owner still had to pay for the clean even though the cleaner couldn't access the property.

I think it's fair to say that although you love your pet, it sounds like a nuisance. The Airbnb owner can no doubt get easier money elsewhere so I don't blame them for asking you to move on.

I think it's also in your benefit that whatever Airbnb you stay in is cleaned and maintained so maybe it just wasn't a good fit.

benefitsterrified · 12/11/2023 19:30

I'm on the side of the airbnb owner, sorry (and I'm a dog lover).

jc12689 · 12/11/2023 19:32

What bread is the dog?

Dacadactyl · 12/11/2023 19:32

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 19:28

Yeah but if I was running an airbnb and could get it booked out easily enough AND had to remember to faff about telling people that someone's coming round, I'd just think "it's easier to get rid of them, save me the hassle of having to fart arse about cos of a dog.

Kitcaterpillar · 12/11/2023 19:32

I voted YABU simply for invoking the pandemic as any kind of reason for anything. My baby was born peak pandemic and has been at nursery for two years!

Vriddle · 12/11/2023 19:33

Yanbu. You explained the situation and the cleaner did not follow the guidelines.

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 19:33

Every week I ask the owner to let me know when the cleaner is coming so I can take dog out. This visit was unannounced. I explained fully why we HAVE to know. Owner said “no, problem”.

I love dogs but I am with the owner on this one. What if a delivery person called in or someone called to the wrong house? Your dog doesn’t sound safe around strangers or other dogs at all. Is it a German Shepard?

StarlightLime · 12/11/2023 19:35

You have an out of control guard dog on the premises, the Airbnb hosts are not even slightly unreasonable.

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 19:35

@Kitcaterpillar I mentioned the pandemic as we were doing really well on the desensitising training - having people come into the house with dog remaining calm. Obviously with lockdown this came to an abrupt halt. And tbh we have just got used to not having people in our house so have not picked up training again.

I think you should keep the dog on a lead in the garden. A front garden should be free from aggressive dogs. Inside the house is different

cansu · 12/11/2023 19:39

Tbh whether they are unreasonable is irrelevant. Airbnb can do whatever they want. You are right they should have told you but they can do what they want and they have.

MsBea · 12/11/2023 19:39

Why do you need a scary guard dog anyway? Get a normal breed.

OK, but now it is a problem... So they've asked you to move on. Which I think is fair.

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 19:40

The side gate is only accessible if you know the code. So not a threat to delivery men. We have a locked side gate at home.

We ensured that there was not a side gate that Amazon men would try given the circumstances. We queried access with the owner prior to booking. Would never have chosen this property had it not seemed impenetrable given safety issues.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 12/11/2023 19:40

Why did you not make sure the dog was on a lead in the garden when the cleaner was there?

You might not have thought the cleaner would come outside but presumably you knew there was a shed they might need access to?

Goodness knows why people have dogs they can't control.

The AirBnB owner was very good to allow someone with a dog at all. You'll either have to foster the dog or find somewhere else.

justalittlesnoel · 12/11/2023 19:41

I think unfortunately you've not trained your dog for all occasions and now you can't rely on your usual protocols it's showing in how the dog is acting.

The owner is right to ask you to leave if the cleaner no longer feels safe to come round, and it's part of their normal routine to need it cleaned weekly. Although you'd asked the owner to notify you of the cleaner coming, there's going to be occasions (like this one) when they'll need to get something, and it's not realistic for them to contact the owner and them contact you to let you know about the cleaner, it's just an absolute faff for them.

Might be worth re booking some classes for the dog then you've got peace of mind going forward.

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 19:43

We did not only ask owner to inform us when the weekly clean was. We were EXPLICIT in describing how our dog reacts to strangers. And that we needed the assurance of not having strangers access the property at any time. Owner said sure, not a problem at all.
