Air bnb owner ott or do we deserve to be chucked out?

We were forced out of our house due to a water leak in the house. The insurance company said we had to move out due to the severity of the work.

A bit of a nightmare for us as we have a large dog. He’s been called a wonderfully mannered dog by a qualified behaviourist outside the house who really doesn’t care about people/other dogs. But he is a breed used for guarding and therefore very barky at home (we have a command that gets him to be quiet but it doesn’t stop the impulse to bark initially). Not to make excuses, we were working on this with the behaviourist pre-pandemic but our progress stalled so we just manage the situation. Ie we have gates all around our house/garden, don’t allow strangers and the dog to meet inside the house (he’s totally fine with people when they are not on “his” property). Our house is basically Fort Knox and only DH and I are here so it’s all pretty easy to manage.

We told the air bnb owner that please tell the cleaner not to enter house or garden without telling us as dog will run up and bark at strangers. He agreed. We explained the situation and he said he understood.

Yesterday pm, cleaner comes into the garden when I was playing footy - she was fetching something from shed. Dog ran towards her and barked. I gave the recall command which worked initially but then my dog ran back to cleaner and barked. It’s no doubt intimidating. After 20 ish secs dog was in the house and I apologised. Recall is not full proof hence why we never rely on it. We would never have found an Airbnb where we were not assured we would be informed of any person entering the property.

Owner has messaged now saying the cleaner won’t return whilst we are here and that means we have to leave as the owner is not ok with the house not being maintenanced.

Cleaner has visited 4 times without incident as the right procedures were followed.

Who is being unreasonable?

It absolutely does make them untrained 🤦‍♀️

No it doesn't. Just because a dog behaves in a completely normal manner when someone unexpectedly intrudes into a space they perceive as theirs, it does not equal untrained. Dog's are not robots, you cannot and should not suppress all their natural behaviours.

Personally, I don't want a dog that doesn't defend me. Barking is just noise. It isn't dangerous. If you don't want to be barked at, don't come in my garden without specific invitation.

10HailMarys · 12/11/2023 20:01

The owner can obviously do what he likes, but given that a) you told him your dog barks at strangers and that you’d need to be warned about the cleaner coming and b) your dog just barks, I think the host is massively overreacting.

You basically have a dog that tells you when a random stranger appears on your property; that isn’t unusual dog behaviour at all.

I get that the cleaner was scared (I’m sure it was a shock) but they were the one who didn’t do what they were told to do.

Airbnb hosts can basically kick you out any time they like for pretty much any reason, so there isn’t much you can do. But yeah, seems like a massive drama on the part of the host and the cleaner.

GwenGhost · 12/11/2023 20:03

The owner has basically changed his mind. The cleaner may well have been so scared she/he is refusing to come back while you are still in the house.
It’s very difficult for you but that isn’t the air bnb owner’s problem.

Why do you need a scary guard dog anyway? Get a normal breed.

Oh do get over yourself.

Dinglewoop · 12/11/2023 20:04

Having just read the Airbnb privacy guidelines, I'd say the host has breeched them. Hosts and those affiliated or working for them can only enter premises with guest's permission. Your permission was that the cleaner could come but only with your prior knowledge. I'd take this up with host or get Airbnb involved.

I'd also say to those saying your dog was out of control and should have been on a lead - that would be true if this was in public but this should of been a safe and private space and OP sounds like she went to a lot of effort to ensure this was the case.

Selttan · 12/11/2023 20:05

YANBU - I actually don't think what you've asked was a huge deal. The cleaner didn't have to be around the dog, you weren't quibbling about specific days/times for her. You just wanted a simple phone call so you could remove the dog from the premises.

Was the cleaner supposed to call you or the owner?

inapickle2300 · 12/11/2023 20:05

What breed is he?

Definitely untrained

You've got an awful lot of excuses.

Yes the owner OK'd the situation but the cleaner isn't happy.

You've got a reactive dog . The pandemic was quite a while ago with regard to dog years.

You need to find somewhere else.

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 20:06

We have hand written, laminated notes on the front door and side door.

Was the cleaner doing the scheduled clean and just went to the shed unexpectedly or was it an unscheduled visit? If the latter I think the owner is unreasonable. If the former I think you should have had the dog under control while she was at the property.

thelonemommabear · 12/11/2023 20:06

It's been 3 years since lockdown...

Gnomegnomegnome · 12/11/2023 20:07

I really like that the owner is putting the cleaners safety first.

This!

I'm not phased by scary barking dogs but honestly you know most people are. All this Fort Knox stuff. Dogs are like their owners....

We had a trainer day 3 of dog being in the house. And spent thousands on training him. It’s not for lack of trying.

Dog attends agility, scent classes with no problem. Is even a favourite at the local pub. We know there is a problem with him in the house hence why we live the way we do.

How long have you been at the Airbnb? It's odd that you say your dog is so perfectly behaved everywhere else, including pubs (!) yet displaying territorial behaviour at a place which isn't his home?

Beach11 · 12/11/2023 20:08

You’re using the pandemic as an excuse. It was over 2 years ago. If you had wanted to continue with a behaviourist, you could have.
why are you avoiding answering what breed the dog is?

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 20:08

@eurochick unscheduled visit. When the cleaner is here, dog is taken on long walk.

Yes dog is very easy going outside of house. Does not even bark outside the house. People walk over him at our local and he does not care.

YABU for not continuing to train your dog after the pandemic. I think you've done them a real disservice it's not normal to need a house like Fort Knox because you can't control your dog.

I agree that's the saddest bit, you've let the dog down

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 20:10

No, not a bully.

Yes you are you chose to book it

Raspberrymoon49 · 12/11/2023 20:12

I agree with Air B&B owner, dog sounds a liability, Fort Knox, advance warning, laminated signs, all too much
