Air bnb owner ott or do we deserve to be chucked out?

We were forced out of our house due to a water leak in the house. The insurance company said we had to move out due to the severity of the work.

A bit of a nightmare for us as we have a large dog. He’s been called a wonderfully mannered dog by a qualified behaviourist outside the house who really doesn’t care about people/other dogs. But he is a breed used for guarding and therefore very barky at home (we have a command that gets him to be quiet but it doesn’t stop the impulse to bark initially). Not to make excuses, we were working on this with the behaviourist pre-pandemic but our progress stalled so we just manage the situation. Ie we have gates all around our house/garden, don’t allow strangers and the dog to meet inside the house (he’s totally fine with people when they are not on “his” property). Our house is basically Fort Knox and only DH and I are here so it’s all pretty easy to manage.

We told the air bnb owner that please tell the cleaner not to enter house or garden without telling us as dog will run up and bark at strangers. He agreed. We explained the situation and he said he understood.

Yesterday pm, cleaner comes into the garden when I was playing footy - she was fetching something from shed. Dog ran towards her and barked. I gave the recall command which worked initially but then my dog ran back to cleaner and barked. It’s no doubt intimidating. After 20 ish secs dog was in the house and I apologised. Recall is not full proof hence why we never rely on it. We would never have found an Airbnb where we were not assured we would be informed of any person entering the property.

Owner has messaged now saying the cleaner won’t return whilst we are here and that means we have to leave as the owner is not ok with the house not being maintenanced.

Cleaner has visited 4 times without incident as the right procedures were followed.

Who is being unreasonable?

Why won't you say the breed?

Why should he? It's not relevant.

Travis1 · 12/11/2023 20:26

Dog or no dog I would not be happy with a cleaner turning up unannounced. Imagine what she’d have said if she’d walking in on you and the husband at it on the couch 🤣

Hippobot · 12/11/2023 20:27

This country has gone absolutely crazy with out of control dogs everywhere. To have to have a property set up like Fort Knox because you have chosen to live with a massive, dangerous predator is nuts. If you cannot or will not train it then why have such a "pet". Some of these dogs are so dangerous and terrifying you might as well have a pet tiger or grizzly bear. What are people trying to prove by buying these savage beasts? The airbnb owner is quite right not to lose his cleaner or have the liability of someone being maimed or killed on his property. Amazed anyone would agree to allow such a dog in their house to begin with. That animal is a tragedy waiting to happen.

museumum · 12/11/2023 20:27

In an Airbnb I think a reliable cleaner is probably more important to the owner than specific guests are. It doesn’t matter who was right. You need to move on as the owner needs their cleaner. Sorry.

Vriddle · 12/11/2023 20:27

No one should enter the property - including the garden - without warning the current residents. The cleaner was in the wrong.

Owlsoutsidethewindow · 12/11/2023 20:27

Think you need a new behaviourist ASAP if you spent thousands on it.

Good behavioural services aren't cheap.

QWERTYoutside · 12/11/2023 20:28

You are being massively UR.
“”Every week I ask the owner to let me know when the cleaner is coming so I can take dog out. This visit was unannounced. I explained fully why we HAVE to know. Owner said “no, problem”””

Your capital shouty HAVE to know suggests very strongly you know the dog will react and your own house according to you is Fort Knox due to the dog. Ffs imagine if it got out ! Is it a GS ? They are so territorial, it’ll bite someone in its territory. That is why they are guard dogs. Yabu and ridiculous to expect anyone to pander to your dog which sounds dangerous

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 20:28

To all the people implying I’m lying about having a well trained dog outside.

What bread is the dog?

Warburton's.

Mrsttcno1 · 12/11/2023 20:30

I suppose the problem is it’s not your house you’re currently living in, so the behaviour you might be okay with in your own home from your dog is your business, but your dogs behaviour in someone else’s property is their business.

QWERTYoutside · 12/11/2023 20:31

You are still not correct about the behaviour of the dangerous dog you own, you have one person’s opinion. Which means shit.

Busephalus · 12/11/2023 20:31

Why have you got a dog that is such a handful

Dinglewoop · 12/11/2023 20:32

To all the people saying it's fine that the Airbnb owner has changed their mind - I'd love to see how you would react if you got kicked out of your Airbnb mid holiday.

This is even more concerning. It says he's fine if he has lots of space but not in a narrow space. Imagine it felt cornered when out in public/at the pub. I hope it is leashed and muzzled at all times in public.

MargaretThursday · 12/11/2023 20:32

I suspect that "delightful dog" is probably as much code as "lovely lady" on the GP letters they send out.

Shoxfordian · 12/11/2023 20:33

Your dog is your responsibility to train and you said you gave up on that- yabu really

If I aggressively ran at the cleaner shouting and threatening to physically attack her then I'd take it on the chin and leave.

Not alway the case though ! Seen people who have spent thousands on a dog still having same issues gone elsewhere and have a better behaved dog after going elsewhere.

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 20:35

The vet and behaviourist are two people.

Im not excusing the bad behaviour inside. Just trying to highlight we are not the shit owners some people are making out.

We know we have a safety issue and tried to mitigate it with the owner. Who knew full well the scale of the issue. We would not have booked had we not been given assurances that no strangers would enter the property without prior warning.

YABU. Also, do you not consider your neighbours? I’d hate a dog next door to me barking like that.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 12/11/2023 20:35

So your dog is lovely and no bother when outside. But wasn't lovely and was bothersome when outside in the garden. You have a large, badly trained dog. I blame the owners.

Frenchie stick? Beagle bagel? Sourdog?

Pilloh · 12/11/2023 20:37

We have no neighbours. We live rurally in the Cotswolds. Do not want children.

Yes, but now the airbnb owner realised its a TOTAL BALLACHE to do it. The owner could have anything going on and having to remind people that someone's coming because of an untrained dog, has become a problem for them.

So if you had a member of your party that was scared of meeting new people and could react unpredictability and therefore you'd gone to great lengths to ensure this didn't happen, you'd just take it on the chin if your wishes were ignored?
