Shall I pay for shoes

Doginthebed · 12/11/2023 19:05

My daughter had a friend over today, said friend left shoes downstairs and puppy chewed them slightly. She has been over before and told to put shoes on stairs out of way. I was in bathroom when she arrived . Aibu to not refund £150 for shoes . They are very wearable just nibbled on on top back area .

Erm, this is my house and I have a puppy. Guests have been told the rules . If they don’t them then that’s up to them

Why have you posted then? If this is your stance

I'm amazed at how many people think that £150 is extortionate for shoes. Do people not prefer to buy good quality (and often expensive) shoes that last years rather than cheap ones all the time?

15yr old's feet are still growing.

RantyAnty · 12/11/2023 23:44

Yes, you should pay.

This isn't an XL 'puppy' is it?

From the OP's aggressive attitude and poor grammar, I'm going to bet a large amount that it is in fact an XL Bully status symbol

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 13/11/2023 03:36

I wouldn’t pay for the shoes. She has been told. I would ask DD not to invite her over again.

SD1978 · 13/11/2023 03:36

She's been made aware of the rules, several times. I wouldn't be paying anything towards them.

You think it’s ’dog-hating’ to not want your footwear to be chewed up by a dog? Because the dog needs love?

Do you also say, ‘aww he’s just being friendly’ when your dog bounds up to and jumps on strangers?

Yes, exactly

FestiveSandman · 13/11/2023 07:38

Ah, I see another entitled dog owner who taking no responsibility for their mutt.

My child would not be coming back to yours.

It’s a shame. Your kind make it hard for decent dog-owners and turn people against dogs.

Not really, I’m a great dog owner, just have a sense of humour and don’t stress about the little things

OP, why post if you just want to fight? Seems you just want opinions supporting a decision it seems you've already made.
FWIW, saying "she's been told" etc would be appropriate re you own child, not a guest. If you don't want this problem then you and daughter need to take responsibility to unsure guest's items are properly out if the way.
I'd be mortified my pet caused damage to any guest's belongings and would have rung the parent immediately to apologize and offer reimbursement for a like replacement.
You say it's a puppy- it's not the puppies fault. It's yours.

Edited

Nope, not wanting a fight . Just asking others opinions. If it happened to my daughter of course I’d be a bit cross but it’s a life lesson… remember rules in houses

Guest should look after her own property, parents can be gutted, but if they can afford £150 they should tell child to take care of their shoes when told where to put them or replace/repair them.

Guest has learned a lesson. Several probably.

My thoughts exactly

So rude. I’m not entitled. I have a puppy. Guest been before . Told to put shoes on stairs . Puppy can’t get them as there is a stair gate . How is that entitled?

And the record your child wouldn’t be invited a first time if they are as rude as you !

Your animal caused damage. You won’t take responsibility for that. That’s what makes you entitled.

You are part of the reason why we have so many dog attacks these days.

And also exactly why I would never allow my child to stay over at a house where there’s a dog. You can’t be trusted.

Ponderingwindow · 13/11/2023 08:00

It isn’t up to a guest to remember that shoes go in a particular spot in a house. It isn’t the same as remembering a rule in your own home. The host should remind upon arrival.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/11/2023 08:00

Can't get over this as well as other posters' views on this - of course you are responsible for protecting a visitor's belongings from your untrained pet.

They were told to put them on the stairs. You should have checked & ensured that did, and supervised your dog.

That said, I wouldn't go asking for money or a replacement if it was my DC it happened to. But I'd certainly be gutted.

If I were you I'd offer a voucher or small payment.

And for those aghast at the cost - teens wear expensive trainers (I've 3 teens). They get them for birthdays or Christmas only. It's completely normal - if expensive. I wouldn't spend it on myself but it's absolutely the norm for most teens.

TeenDivided · 13/11/2023 08:02

@FestiveSandman But the OP had set up and explained a system of how the guest could keep their shoes safe. The guest is 15 and would have seen the stairgate as a visual reminder. It isn't the OP's fault a 15yo failed to safeguard her own, expensive, property.

Maddy70 · 13/11/2023 08:05

Your dog chewed them. You should offer to replace(but say you can't afford 150 but you can buy a cheaper pair )
You didn't tell her to put the shoes away this time

Unbelievable.

It isn't the 15 yo guest's responsibility to guard their property against an untrained, unmanaged pet.

How hard would it be for OP or her DC to make sure the shoes were out of reach of the dog, having thought to remind the visitor?

HoppingPavlova · 13/11/2023 08:08

To my mind it depends whether you make people take their shoes off or not. If not, and the girl took them off and left them lying around, then her tough luck I think. Whereas if you make people take shoes off, then you have more of a responsibility for them once they are off and asking for people to toss them into some stairs seems a bit weird and prone to error. What if one falls off? What if one is knocked odd as people go up/down, there should be a secure shoe closet in the case of a shoe munching dog if people are made to take them off.
