My daughter had a friend over today, said friend left shoes downstairs and puppy chewed them slightly. She has been over before and told to put shoes on stairs out of way. I was in bathroom when she arrived . Aibu to not refund £150 for shoes . They are very wearable just nibbled on on top back area .

They are wearable and not destroyed right?
Unless there is a direct request from the parents, I wouldn't give it a other thought.

PlipPlopChoo · 12/11/2023 19:56

To those suggesting that OP make an offer. Can you elaborate as to why?

The shoes are nibbled a bit. Are you suggesting that OP offer money towards having them professionally restored? If not then the money can only be as a token of guilt. But OP has not done anything wrong to warrant this.

Doginthebed · 12/11/2023 19:56

I think so

Guest been before. Knows our protocol about things left lying around .Guest 15 years old

Presumably you’re not a puppy farm though, so this instruction to put shoes on the stairs isn’t something that’s been every week for the last 3 years?
The devil is in the detail. If she’s been told once, a couple of weeks ago, and not stressing why (like, “please put them out of the way of the puppy on the stairs” (which could just mean they’ll get played with) compared to, “you need to put shoes on the stairs right away from the puppy or the WILL get chewed and damaged”) then it’s no surprise a teen would forget.
I live with a teen who you could remind every day living there, who’d still forget!
So possibly you - or your child as host - should have done more.

Teens have a good a memory as any other adult. They let things slip their minds when it does not interest them. I bet now her £150 shoes have been nibbled she will remember the correct place to put them every single time.

MonumentalLentil · 12/11/2023 20:00

Guest should look after her own property, parents can be gutted, but if they can afford £150 they should tell child to take care of their shoes when told where to put them or replace/repair them.

Guest has learned a lesson. Several probably.

PinkArt · 12/11/2023 20:00

Presumably it wasn't her choice to take them off, nor was it her choice for you to have a shoe eating dog. If your dog can't behave around shoes, it is really unreasonable of you to expect guests to take them off until you train it properly.

Dds friends always told to leave on stairs out of reach. I was in bathroom but friend been before and told “house rules” Not reminded this time as I was in bathroom .

How many times has she been and been told the rules?

1990thatsme · 12/11/2023 20:02

YANBU.

She had been told not to leave them lying around and why, so it’s her responsibility.

”Hi. Just a call to let you know I am getting married! To myself. I am registered at Manolo Blahnik”

your thread made me think of this episode of Sex and the city! But in fairness you did warn her…

Me too!

feelingalittlehorse · 12/11/2023 20:03

I’ll go against the grain. There have been multiple unfortunate puppy snacksidents in this house- and if it’s ever been anything that belongs to someone else, I have replaced like for like without question.

If the shoes had been £30, would you have offered to pay? Whilst the cost is different, the actual scenario isn’t.

Doginthebed · 12/11/2023 20:05

Erm, this is my house and I have a puppy. Guests have been told the rules . If they don’t them then that’s up to them

Just tell them you are sorry their child left the shoes where she knew the puppy could eat them, and perhaps she coud wear some old ones if she visits again.

No way would I pay for them, especially if they are still wearable. It was her own fault.

I'm amazed at how many people think that £150 is extortionate for shoes. Do people not prefer to buy good quality (and often expensive) shoes that last years rather than cheap ones all the time?

But for a 15 year old's everyday use?

Absolutely agree, but the OP sounded like it was a younger child, and even though I could afford £150 on shoes for my little ones, I am aware their feet will grow too quickly to get the benefit of the quality.

UpUpUpU · 12/11/2023 20:13

£150 is a ridiculous price for kids shoes, or any shoes for that matter

Meeting · 12/11/2023 20:13

@OhComeOnFFS most trainers from Nike etc will set you back a minimum of £100 these days, and they would be for every day wear. The price per wear ends up being next to nothing.

youngestisapsycho · 12/11/2023 20:15

Nike Jordans? DD has a pair. Yes i paid £150 for them… her 16th bday present. I’d be a bit pissed off they got a bit ruined but wouldn’t ask for money if she knew the rules of friends house and that there was a puppy there likely to chew them!

CrikeyMajikey · 12/11/2023 20:18

And what about OP’s DC in all of this? DC is presumably fully aware of your house rules and why. If it becomes an issue, I think I’d make DC pay half the replacement cost with the guest meeting the other half.

My 12 year old son has three pairs of Nike air Jordan's. He loves them and my sister, who is childless and treats him like her own, gets them for him!

Busephalus · 12/11/2023 20:25

I'd hope my kids didn't attach such importance to trainers

Tally00 · 12/11/2023 20:27

£150? Do you think the shoes really cost that much or the parents are chancers?
