Could they not just spell it normally?

So the next storm is on its way. But really, what is wrong with calling it Debbie or Deborah. Why do they have to make the storm sound chavvy with its Debi spelling?

Define chavvy

WeekWeekWeek · 12/11/2023 12:35

Your ignorance is showing, OP.

Debi isn’t a British name and was named by Met Éireann.

MojoMoon · 12/11/2023 12:38

Storms are named together by the UK, Irish and Dutch meteorological offices. That's why you have ones like Babet and Piet (on the list for later this year) as those as Dutch names - and also Ciaran, Fergus and Gerrit (Irish names albeit there are lots of them in the UK too).
You can put your suggested storm names forward to the relevant met offices so someone clearly proposed Debi

You can suggest Deborah or other "non chavvy" names if you like here: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/forms/name-our-storms-call-for-names

What @WeekWeekWeek said.

ElleCapitaine · 12/11/2023 12:41

Believe it or not, the UK isn’t the boss of all the storms.

A chavvy name! Whatever shall we do?!

FuckingHellAdele · 12/11/2023 12:44

They are spelling it normally.

Mouse82 · 12/11/2023 12:45

Debi means Bee and also means Goddess in Hindi, it is also of Hebrew origins.

eosmum · 12/11/2023 12:47

The Irish for Deborah is Gobnait according to my late dad. So not sure where the name is from.

Babet was renamed Babette in Sweden.

There you go, OP.

We'll have a Storm Stuart at some point if we get as far as S (hopefully not).

Wait till we get to K, they'll name the storm Klaxon, then you'll have something to shout about!!

TheShellBeach · 12/11/2023 12:53

I thought the same but didn't realise how many countries name the various storms.
So I'm happy to be corrected.

What is wrong with Stuart?

Snoken · 12/11/2023 12:54

This might be the epitome of British classism, a chav-y storm coming. What’s wrong with a nice middle class storm like Deborah?

CecilyP · 12/11/2023 12:57

Don’t know about chavvy, but Debi and some of the other names just sound too tame and cosy, whereas Deborah sounds like a really good stormy name!

Is anyone going to take Storm Minnie seriously?

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/11/2023 12:58

Why are storms named?

Gnomegnomegnome · 12/11/2023 12:58

It’s funny isn’t it that the only people that tend to describe things as ‘chavy’ are those that are probably quite insecure and desperately trying to prove that they are worthy.

Enjoy your chavy storm @SayingwhatIreallythink

Citrusandginger · 12/11/2023 12:59

Are chavvy storms any more sparkly than the usual classic but apparently tasteful variety?

Shitzngiggles · 12/11/2023 13:00

BitofaStramash · 12/11/2023 12:54

I think the poster probably that hopefully we won't get that many storms that would mean having to get as far as S.

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 12/11/2023 13:00

Would you prefer a double-barrelled name OP?

Agapornis · 12/11/2023 13:06

I am very much looking forward to no one being able to correctly pronounce Gerrit Grin (fwiw Gerrit, Henk and Piet are all untrendy old/middle aged man names)
