Could they not just spell it normally?

So the next storm is on its way. But really, what is wrong with calling it Debbie or Deborah. Why do they have to make the storm sound chavvy with its Debi spelling?

I must say I swooned dramatically when I first heard the storm’s name, and I’ve been clutching my pearls excessively since. I’m not sure why they could call it Storm Ophelia or Storm Penelope. This would never have happened before Brexit.

fuzzystar · 12/11/2023 13:11

Why so rude to all the Debis out there?

CecilyP · 12/11/2023 12:57

Don’t know about chavvy, but Debi and some of the other names just sound too tame and cosy, whereas Deborah sounds like a really good stormy name!

I remember hearing something on a podcast (No Such Thing as a Fish, IIRC) years ago about storms with female names causing more damage for this very reason. People have this perception that female-named storms won’t be as ferocious as those with a male name, and don’t take appropriate action to protect themselves and their property.

Pablova · 12/11/2023 13:17

Maybe take it up with Debi Garft, a Scottish flood policy team member, after whom the storm is named.
I’m sure she’d love to hear your opinion on her chavvy name.

How Storm Ciarán and other UK storms get their names

The UK's latest storm is named after a civil servant in Northern Ireland.

Believe it or not, the UK isn’t the boss of all the storms.

😂That gave me a much needed chuckle. Thanks Elle!

A chavvy name! Whatever shall we do?!

😆

There you go, OP.

We'll have a Storm Stuart at some point if we get as far as S (hopefully not).

If it's anything like the Stuart I know we should expect a lot of wind...

Talisin · 12/11/2023 13:28

A thread complaining about a chavvy storm has to be absolute peak mumsnet.

stayathomer · 12/11/2023 13:30

I’ve never seen the name ‘Debi’ (am Irish but I don’t know if it’s over here, I may just have seen it). There is something very cute about it! Is it pronounced the same as Debbie?

WombatCowgirl · 12/11/2023 13:31

That's correct as a poster said, research shows that storms in America with female names are more destructive because people feel they are less of a threat and so don't cancel their journeys or strap their trampoline down or seek shelter. You'd have thought Hurricane Katrina would have set a standard! Storm Minnie definitely sounds like a cartoon tornado.

I’m sure she’d love to hear your opinion on her chavvy name.

Debi Garft recently retired and was a Senior Policy Officer in the Scottish Government Flooding Team and Scottish Flood Forecasting Service.

Maybe, the OP believes those with 'chavvy' names should be banned from holding senior roles in government teams.

Obviously, the OP needs to take it up with Debi's mum and dad.

Oh god not one of those grey tracky bottom wearing storms.

Howling as I'm sat here in grey trackie bottoms. Didnt know it was the height of chavyness

SleepingStandingUp · 12/11/2023 13:47

Oh golly, what does one do when the storm is so clearly working class?? Does one need a special umbrella from Primark??

Zone2NorthLondon · 12/11/2023 13:54

By denouncing the name Debi as chavvy you’re demonstrating your own bad manners and lack of social currency

Worriedmum159 · 12/11/2023 14:03

Debra is the most chavvy spelling. Especially when coupled with a fake double barrelled surname. Grim.

I don't think the OP will return until they have furthered their education somewhat.

CharingX976 · 12/11/2023 14:18

I think they should have gone with "Deborah", a formidable Old Testament prophetess who led her people into battle when the men wouldn't step up. Much stormier. Debi sounds too cuddly.

LlynTegid · 12/11/2023 14:20

Presumably if it gets to it, people will moan about Storm Minnie!

AnneValentine · 12/11/2023 14:21

Oh dear.

itsmyp4rty · 12/11/2023 14:24

Surely Debbi would be the chav spelling? Personally I don't have a problem with the term chav, nothing sums up the mother with 15 kids, never worked a day, smoking fags at the school gate and screeching at their kid to get the fuck over here quite like it.
