To eat bolognaise I left out over night?

shorterthanaverage · 11/11/2023 09:50

I cooked a big pot of bolognaise last night and left the remainder on top of the oven in a big aluminium casserole pot with every intention of portioning it up and putting it the fridge for today.

Would it be ok for me to have for lunch or do I need to waste it now?

I would. Especially at this time of year when it's cold. Wouldn't cross my mind not to.

Zanatdy · 11/11/2023 09:54

I’d definitely and have done that. Height of summer maybe not but this time of year no problem

shorterthanaverage · 11/11/2023 09:55

I forgot to add I did not portion it up and put it in the fridge, it's still in top of the oven.

Unless you keep your house ridiculously hot overnight, I would.

Instead of microwaving it though I would heat it thoroughly in a pan

Dacadactyl · 11/11/2023 09:56

Yes I do this all the time (and not by accident either)

caringcarer · 11/11/2023 09:57

In the summer I'd bin it but it's cold at night so get it in the fridge quickly.

MassageForLife · 11/11/2023 09:57

I would eat it.

When I was a child, we didn't have a fridge. We ate leftovers and had no problems.

shorterthanaverage · 11/11/2023 09:57

Thank you for replying. I shall heat and enjoy.

I wouldn’t. But no matter what you post about on mumsnet when it comes to ‘should I eat this’ you will get plenty of replies telling you it’s absolutely fine so I’m not sure it’s even worth reading the replies on this subject 😅

hedgehoglurker · 11/11/2023 09:58

I wouldn't. I have thrown out a huge pot of chilli in similar circumstances. However, if your kitchen is under 5 degrees overnight, not a problem to eat it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/11/2023 09:58

It's fine. I do this all the time, often it is too warm to put in the fridge (which can causes its own issues) or Mr Monkey leaves food out after he has eaten dinner late following a work shift. We are not dead.

Just reheat it properly before you eat it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2023 09:59

Done it for years. Blast it in the microwave or bubble on the hob. It’ll be good, tastes better next day.

Riverlee · 11/11/2023 09:59

I do that all the time. If the meat is still warm, I never put in the fridge.

VerrryNiceIndeed · 11/11/2023 10:00

It is probably fine but it would put me off and I wouldn’t enjoy it.

VerticalSausages · 11/11/2023 10:01

Of course it’s fine. I would also reheat it in the pan for longer than usual rather than microwave.

Or maybe it just shows you that the vast majority of stuff is totally fine to eat ages after the best before date (and sometimes even the use by date)

I leave stuff on the top in the summer overnight too and never been ill.

39and · 11/11/2023 10:02

Yes it should be fine at this time of year

gawditswindy · 11/11/2023 10:03

I would. The food waste in this country is shameful. Just make sure it's piping hot.

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/11/2023 10:05

I'd eat that. I've just eaten a leftover sausage from last nights tea, that's been left out all night.

Can guarantee nothing will happen.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/11/2023 10:06

Exactly. People have lost sight of food safety norm. How do you think people manged before fridges were common? What is more important IMO is to ensure it is covered properly.

I wouldn't leave a pan of food out of the fridge at the height of summer, but then I am probably not batch cooking meat stews at the height of summer either!

Gerrataere · 11/11/2023 10:06

I recently chucked out a curry sauce I’d left to cool (was meant to be a freezer portion and had used cream as an ingredient), but my small kitchen stays very warm between the heater, cooker and tumble dryer. I have the window open until the depth of winter during the day to balance it out. If you think it had been cold enough overnight then don’t see an issue. My mother used to make stew in a massive pot in winter and leave it in the pot until the next night - that second portion always tasted so much better…

TeaKitten · 11/11/2023 10:11

Well they probably didn’t batch cook to put portions in the fridge or freezer for one thing. Houses were also colder.

but on the other hand, lots of people are dead from eating reheated pasta or meat that has been left out overnight, so not sure what you not being dead personally proves

Only the people who are not dead will be replying to this thread. The people who did this and died will not have a very high posting rate

before fridges were common, food was smoked, salted, pickled, placed in larders, etc. My 400 year old house has a larder - it is much colder in there than the rest of the house, it was designed to be. The house four doors up has an ice house

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/11/2023 10:19

I'm pretty very few people have ever died from reheating pasta!

You are more likely to cause issues putting warm food in the fridge.
