Anyone else dislike Channel 4’s current ‘ Carbon Skidmark’ trailer/ad?

I support the underlying message/cause but I just find it gross and crass. 🙄

It is very, very rare for me to object to TV. I am not easily bothered by anything but this was on while watching TV with my 4 year old and I was appalled. DH and I were completely shocked.

Absolutely disgraceful to be shown before 9pm.

AllAboutThaBase · 09/11/2023 18:52

I knew some people will come with the "Oh you pearl clutchers. Oh you must have lived an extremely sheltered life. I'm so edgy I can take tacky things" posts. That so-called insult is so tired and old, it means nothing.

Anyway, the ad got people talking quite alright but about what? Barely anyone's talking about the environment if they weren't already doing so before this incredibly stupid and gross ad. They're only talking about a stupid and gross ad which they'll happily forget. If that's the aim of the ad, then they succeeded.

bellac11 · 09/11/2023 19:01

Yes another one who rolled their eyes and wondered why they thought that this would win hearts and minds and encourage people to buy into the message

I htink its hugely off putting, its aggressive, crass, hostile and inappropriate for kids to see, why the need for the sexualised moves connected with skid marks, connected to the environment?

Yes as usual ad makers trying to be shocking and edgy, but its an own goal as with many of these types of ads, what they do is turn people off and disenfranchise the target audience.

(the same happened I think to the ad with all the kids telling adults off for ruining the planet, cant even remember who that was for now, but it died a swift death)

LoveHopePeace · 09/11/2023 22:12

And yet, here we are... These ads are not made for people my age.

WinkyTinky · 09/11/2023 22:24

Absolutely bloody awful. I saw this thread pop up earlier today but didn't read it, then when visiting my brother tonight I caught it out of the corner of my eye and knew straight away it was this trailer. Wtf are Channel 4 thinking??? The writers, the actors, how could anyone come up with this and not think it will drive people away from wanting to watch something about a very important issue?!! I only half watched it as I was trying to keep my brother distracted so we wouldn't have to acknowledge the awfulness of it, but I got enough to see that I would hate my kids to see it. And this was 7.30pm just before The Simpsons! It's not often I have Channel 4 on, but I actively avoid leaving it on my own TV just in case it comes on. Totally unnecessarily grotesque. Yes, it's got people talking, but not in a good way ffs. I usually pop in to see my mum on a Friday afternoon and we watch Countdown. I'm praying this bloody thing doesn't come on!!! 😣

SallyC82 · 10/11/2023 14:15

It's got you all talking so I guess its done its job.

Lets face it, we are killing the planet and a lot of that fault lies with politicians and big businesses. Highlighting that through shock value and getting people talking is the purpose of the ad, because we need to be having this conversation right now.

It’s got us talking about the trailer. I think it’s done quite the opposite in terms of promoting the cause.

It still links climate change to “unconventionality” , which is already the problem.

It needs to be seen as something compatible to mainstream living.

Americano75 · 10/11/2023 14:49

It's got us all talking about the trailer, not the message.

hattie43 · 10/11/2023 17:12

Grim

TimeMovesOn · 10/11/2023 19:36

I think the point is that you are repulsed.
It's repulsive.
But so is flying for 14 minutes to get to a meeting, as in the first scene.
The point is, we're working hard to recycle things whilst some groups of people are laughing in our faces and using a million times more fuel than we're saving.
Just look at the statistics on private jets.

The point is they don't care.
The point is, they ARE repulsive- you're feeling what you're supposed to feel.

I hate the advert but I think it's clever, and I think I'm supposed to hate it.
The programmes will be interesting....

John5956 · 10/11/2023 20:49

I do agree with you. Soooo much. It's just awful!!!!!

John5956 · 10/11/2023 20:51

I do agree. It's a real disgrace.

Clafoutie · 10/11/2023 21:17

I saw it again this morning ( 8am) They seemed to have taken out the scene of the woman dragging her bum across the floor leaving a skidmark on the carpet. Maybe they will have a rethink. I doubt it though 🙄 Glad I wasn’t alone in hating it anyway.

I think it's a bit grim and not clever/funny/edgy as C4 probably think it is. Still, it's got people talking!

This.

Cat131 · 10/11/2023 22:12

I was shocked when I first saw it, I get the message but what’s with the thrusting. It should be on after watershed (if at all)
C4 have done their job though getting ppl to talk about it! X

We just saw it for the first time and that scene was there. Maybe it’s a post watershed version.

Monkeytennis97 · 10/11/2023 22:50

I watched it with my mouth open too the first time. I just thought how did they manage to get that many actors to do that?... how degrading. Yuck.

To talk about what, though?

Mumgoingrey · 11/11/2023 06:40

I think this advert has a vile and needs taking off, I understand they are trying to make a point but they don’t even get this vile when advertising nappies

That’s my point though. The advert is playground politics with its “nasty shitty business people fucking us all over”. Them and us. I think it’s daft to pretend that given the same wealth, we wouldn’t make much the same choices. Giving up stuff that makes life easier or nicer is hard.

Chanel 4 will have used a ton of money and resources on that trailer. Do you think the creatives behind it are living frugally with the essentials or enjoying the same excesses the rest of us do? Those actors aren’t saying it’s a complete waste of paper, white boxers etc, weeks of paying people to do very little are they. They are saying “well it’s advertising a greater cause”. Same as business people think profitability helps everyone. If it means jumping on a plane so they can do it rather than a 3 hour train ride they will.

Barking2684 · 11/11/2023 09:15

Please take a minute to lodge a complaint with the ASA.

This is the only way we can stop our children and grandchildren being shown such disgusting content and sexually overt dancing.
I have done this today and it does just take a minute.

Disgusting.

susiedaisy1912 · 11/11/2023 14:12

I saw a TikTok the other week that's said airlines will fly an empty plane rather than pay a fine for not using the slot at the airport and that this happens thousands of times a year. Not sure if this is true but if it is it certainly makes a mockery of anything we are doing to recycle.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 11/11/2023 14:28

Isn't there some weird sex fetish with shit? I remember reading a book where a bloke can only get his kicks by being shat on 🤮 that's all I think about when I see the advert. Totally inappropriate for children, but the idiots who buy into this are the same idiots who believe you can change sex, it's all about sexualisation, and if people can't see it then more fool them. Much more powerful and hard hitting ways to get the world to wake up to climate change, and this isn't one on them. I find it depressing that supposedly intelligent people who script this dross can't come up with anything better. Complete waste of university fees.

OneTC · 11/11/2023 14:34

If your mind is going to sex when you see some shitty kecks waggled about then I kindly suggest therapy

Finteq · 11/11/2023 14:34

Oh god.

This was showing on the TV the other day. Was put of the room for a split second.

All I saw was half naked people dancing in their underwear on returning to the room.

Grabbed the remote as quick as I could to change the channel. Kids just laughing.

At least I know what it was about now.

Thought it might have been about lockdown parties cos I saw them dancing in what looked like the house of commons.
