Women's nightwear rant

Kangaroobrain · 08/11/2023 13:35

Went to a well known clothing store yesterday to buy new pyjamas for myself, and for my 86 year old mum as a birthday gift.
Not all, but I'd say a good 70% of all the women's nightwear looked like it was designed for little girls - pastel shades with teddies, Minnie mouse, glitter, babyish slogans etc.

I really struggled to find some nice, grown up looking designs. Am I missing something - why is there an assumption that adult women want to dress like 5 year olds at bedtime?

What store did you go to?

Maybe try a different store.

Garlicnaan · 08/11/2023 13:37

Yanbu!

I have found nice PJs in Tesco and more high end in Jigsaw, but most of it is either really boring or childish.

Sparklesocks · 08/11/2023 13:38

I think some do!
It must sell or they wouldn’t stock so much.
but the other end of the scale is women’s nightwear that is seen as too ‘frumpy’ or old fashioned.

personally I quite like bright PJs/nighties but not into Disney pictures etc.

Mercurial123 · 08/11/2023 13:38

I've never had this issue.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 08/11/2023 13:39

I've had luck in Asda. And they sell separates too which is great if you are different sizes top and bottom

SylvieLaufeydottir · 08/11/2023 13:40

There's nearly always a basic tartan and/or dark option. There are also an increasing number of "traditional"-style PJ makers e.g. Their Nibs. What are you actually looking for?

bluebeck · 08/11/2023 13:40

Where did you go? I get mine from M and S or Next. Admittedly I do like animals on my PJs but no cartoon characters.

Fionaville · 08/11/2023 13:41

I agree. Most stores stock lots of childish nightwear for women.
I tend to shop online mostly now. JD Williams and simplybe do nice nightwear. I've got a few pairs of really nice PJs from them and not too expensive.

DressedForWarmth · 08/11/2023 13:42

I'm having similar problems. I want a decent wide, fabric covered waistband - not a thin strip of elastic - and 100% cotton. Thicker material and pockets would be a bonus. Plus I don't want a huge gaping neck. I usually buy mens pyjamas but at the moment even these seem to be mostly made of polyester.

SirenSays · 08/11/2023 13:43

Fable and Eve have some nice sets

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 08/11/2023 13:44

Agreed!

I need, Tall pjs, 100% cotton, not fast fashion quality (like Tesco) and not pink checks or sausage dogs on the front please.

Found some at Next but having to return due to being faulty already.

Devilsmommy · 08/11/2023 13:44

The clothing part of Poundland have nice PJ's, also home bargains

MrsHughesPinny · 08/11/2023 13:46

Agree! I get mine (and often for my DM too) from Cyberjammies. Stupid name, but lovely nightwear.

TheChristmasPig · 08/11/2023 13:46

I buy black yoga pants or similar , black thermal vest or similar eg from M&S and a black fleecy hoody type thing to cover up. I always needed to be able to leave the house in my nightwear when DS was at the stage of climbing out his bedroom window to do God knows what and now I cant get out of the habit.

Ktime · 08/11/2023 13:48

I’m obsessed with Tesco for PJs, especially the cotton ones that feel like lawn.

AgnesX · 08/11/2023 13:49

Have you tried John Lewis everyday range?

ThinWomansBrain · 08/11/2023 13:51

some pastels, but not a disney character or glitter in sight - Damart
Also cotton traders

TheRealMaudOHara · 08/11/2023 13:53

Someone needs to create a pyjama line where you can get coordinating colours and prints and pick the shapes you like. I like plain colours but being able to have 4x different tops and 4x different bottoms I can mix and match depending on weather and mood would be ideal for me. I've been thinking about going @TheChristmasPig route and just getting all black to make life easier.

Where are you shopping? Primark?
Sounds very Primark.

Try John Lewis or M+S

Ha, I also immediately suspected Primark!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 08/11/2023 14:04

Can't believe I'm writing this but I really like the nightwear in Primark!

NotSorry · 08/11/2023 14:09

I get mine from John Lewis or Cyberjammies
