Women's nightwear rant

Kangaroobrain · 08/11/2023 13:35

Went to a well known clothing store yesterday to buy new pyjamas for myself, and for my 86 year old mum as a birthday gift.
Not all, but I'd say a good 70% of all the women's nightwear looked like it was designed for little girls - pastel shades with teddies, Minnie mouse, glitter, babyish slogans etc.

I really struggled to find some nice, grown up looking designs. Am I missing something - why is there an assumption that adult women want to dress like 5 year olds at bedtime?

Can't believe I'm writing this but I really like the nightwear in Primark!

So do I
jammies and knickers are the only things I get from primark.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 08/11/2023 14:14

You're not alone OP, I despair at some of the choices.

I bought these a couple of years ago on Amazon and really like them. Pretty much perfect and very comfy and flattering.

Don't knock Primark! Last year Primark was where I got pjs for my very specific requirements after M&S abandoned their 100% cotton version: 100% cotton, t shirt top, long legged bottoms, no buttons or ties, non childish print or baby pastels, could mix and match. A year on they're washing and tumble drying well. A friend told me she got some in Next to the same requirements. I too would love somewhere that did them as separates in block colours (and lovely grown up jewel colours, cosy greys, bright yellow and oranges, etc).

You are not alone

Where can you buy plain, flattering, ok quality PJs for women in 50s http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/4931336-where-can-you-buy-plain-flattering-ok-quality-pjs-for-women-in-50s

Lovelydovey · 08/11/2023 14:24

I like the Next William Morris nightwear - but then I'm a sucker for those patterns.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 08/11/2023 14:30

Recently everything in Primark has been slippery polyester. They used to excel at brushed cotton pj bottoms. I've had success in peacocks recently. Also Asda and Sainsbo.

Cheeesus · 08/11/2023 14:33

I think you need to say where you were shopping, OP.
Primark is probably largely targeting 14 year olds because they are its biggest market?

Minglemangle007 · 08/11/2023 14:35

Uniqlo do some great ones, tartan or floral satin that are thick, wash beautifully and have the biggest pockets imaginable!

Watchthesteppy · 08/11/2023 14:37

I have been nowhere but m+s since they started doing pjs with pockets!
Omg how can something so basic be so amazing! I no longer feel like my nan with a tissue up my sleeve or tucked in my boobs!
Please include if anywhere else has started doing pockets too!

Caledoniadreaming · 08/11/2023 14:40

I've seen Cyberjammies and Their Nibs mentioned upthread - would add Chelsea Peers to the list for "proper" pyjamas. M&S are still a go to as well.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/11/2023 14:42

I don't have this problem. I've got plain, checked, striped etc. Which shops did you try?

sockarefootwear · 08/11/2023 14:43

YANBU Not long ago I went to M&S hoping to buy nightwear- assuming that this would be a sensible choice for someone in their 50s. In the men's section there were loads of comfy looking items in plain colours available in either packs (including multi packs with several pairs in similar colours) or individual bottoms/tops and with a choice of leg length in some. In the women's section the options were:

  • floral old fashioned nighties
  • Pyjamas with woodland creatures or cartoon characters on them (all supposedly long trousers but actually cropped on anyone over 5ft 4, and no choice of leg length)
  • Fluffy fleecy shorts (hot pants length) and tops (who the hell wants fleecy nightwear with short shorts?)
Otterock · 08/11/2023 14:50

Cyberjammies have some good stuff

The clothing part of Poundland have nice PJ's, also home bargains

Yeah, this. I've got quite a lot from there recently, and it all seems to wash well too, which is a bonus.

CesareBorgia · 08/11/2023 14:55

YANBU - really dislike cutesy nightwear.

Gowlett · 08/11/2023 14:57

I found the same. My mum likes long sleeves. Knee length or longer. Thick cotton. Nothing. We both go to a local lingerie store that gets in the stuff we want. Expensive, but worth it.

Definitely washes well, especially the men's PJ's from home bargains

Try m&s, you might need to order online first.

I hate this too. There are many designs with Disney characters and cutesy animals on. I’m a woman ffs, not a child!

I detest all the wishy washy colours, and there are so many sets that are sleeveless, and/or come with shorts in Autumn and Winter.

I bought a gorgeous pyjama set from Nobody’s Child last year. The fabric has a gorgeous pattern and colourway, but they are satin (higher quality satin than most retailers nowadays), but I’d really prefer it if they were brushed cotton for example, for warmth and comfort.

LaughterintheRains · 08/11/2023 16:14

You can name the store, you know.

Is it M&S?

Try

It was Matalan. Don't often shop there but just happened to be handy where we were.

I have definitely noticed this trend elsewhere though!

I bought my DS a pair of men's from Asda. But found he gets too hot wearing them which triggers seizures. So I wear them instead they're so warm and comfy. I'll be buying men's again next time.
