To be sad my dd won’t have a sister?

She has two older brothers, but for me and all around me wiht friends and cousins and aunts I see that special place a sister or several holds, and I’m so sad for her she won’t have that. It’s dhs call that we are done with babies and he’s just not very sensitive about things, which doesn’t help. Tell me of your close lasting relationships with brothers to make me feel better! (I have brothers too but it’s not the same)

I don't have a sister but my brother is one of my best friends :)

WickedSerious · 07/11/2023 12:44

I have a sister,we have next to nothing to do with one another.

Fundays12 · 07/11/2023 12:44

Sorry but a sister doesn't guarantee a friendship. They may not be able to stand each other. My sister and I couldn't be more different. We really didn't get on as kids and though get on fine now as adults we are not close friends. We don't even live in the same country let alone meet often.

My oldest two boys don't get on as they are polar opposites. My middle son and younger get on very well and are besties. It's cute but may not last. People pick there own special relationships they are not decided by who they are related to and those that do expect there child to have a super close relationship with x or y just because they are related are putting a very unfair amount of pressure on a child. Its often quite one sided with one party being controlling over the other to some extent.

nadine90 · 07/11/2023 12:45

I have a brother and a sister. I’m close to both but probably more similar in personality to my brother. I have female friends with sisters they hate, brothers they adore, etc. I really don’t think gender matters when it comes to personalities clicking with each other.

SallyWD · 07/11/2023 12:47

Respectfully, I think this isn't a problem at all. You're just assuming it is.
I have no sisters but two brothers. I can't imagine having a sister and I've never wanted one. Me and my two brothers are sooo alike and very close. We're in touch every day. When we are together it's just non-stop laughter (although we can have serious conversations too). I've always been glad I have brothers because I look at my friends with sisters and their relationships seem quite complicated! Everything feels easy with my brothers.
I've always got on well with men and had male friends and I think it's because of my closeness to my brothers.

ajarintennessee · 07/11/2023 12:49

Thanks again to the kind posters sharing their stories about being close to brothers, which logically I understand but it really helps to hear. And to those who understand how I feel.

My mum is one of five. There’s four womem and one man. None of the women speak to one another. Make of that what you will

ashitghost · 07/11/2023 12:50

Get a grip.

jellybeanathome · 07/11/2023 12:51

YANBU to feel what you feel. You can only bring your experiences to your feelings and if your experiences are ONLY close sisters then it's no wonder you feel sad. But I struggle to believe you ONLY know sisters with close relationships. I think it's more likely you're looking at this with rose tinted glasses. Personally, I don’t think gender has anything to do with it and it's your responsibility to cultivate close sibling relationships between your daughter and her brothers - if I were you, I'd be focussing my attention on that rather than feeling sad. Good luck! 😊

I have one sister and we are practically strangers. I'd have loved a brother!

This is me.
My dh has 2 ds
One he is particularly close to
The db not so much though they do get on.
Your DD is one lucky little girl (sisters compete )

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 07/11/2023 12:51

I think age gap has more sway on closeness than gender. A boy and girl with 1 year apart are more likely to get on then a girl and girl with 7 years apart

HerRoyalStressHead · 07/11/2023 12:51

I'm the only daughter of an only daughter and I have an only daughter.

Mum is especially close to her oldest brother who is 17 years older than her.

I'm very close with my younger brother. I'm 10 years older than him. We're best friends. Growing up he called me his second mum, even now we laugh and joke and wind mum up.

My DD is very close with both of her brothers. She loves being the only girl as that makes her special.

I really don't think not having a sister is a problem. I think you're just sad you won't have any more children, which is perfectly valid for you to feel that way, but it isn't sad that your DD won't have a sister.

Ladyj84 · 07/11/2023 12:51

I'm 1 of 4. I adore my 2 brothers am very close to both even tho one is 14 years younger. They will ring ,message, visit and I know they are always there if I need them to.

PinkPink1 · 07/11/2023 12:53

I have 2 brothers and 0 girl cousins. I love my brothers. I know many women who don't get on with their sister or they're indifferent.

VeridicalVagabond · 07/11/2023 12:53

I have six siblings OP, four brothers and two sisters, and I'm far far closer to my brothers.

The two brothers closest to me in age are my very best pals, we still go out together regularly, holiday together, hang out at weekends. My daughter and their kids are close, my younger brother's and my dogs are even best friends.

I love my sisters but sisterly relationships can be SUCH a mixed bag. I know far more people who have difficult relationships with their sisters than good - lots of rivalry. My elder sister thought I was an annoyance so we never bonded, and my younger sister was just so different to me we've never really got on. We're fine now as adults but my brothers are my rocks. I'd say my sisters are my siblings, but my brothers are my siblings and my friends.

CanIPetThatDawg · 07/11/2023 12:53

I have four brothers, and never once did I wish I had a sister. Have always found it easy to develop close female friendships. I really feel I've got the best of both worlds.

Lemsipper · 07/11/2023 12:54

I think you’re setting yourself up for a lifetime of disappointment if you keep imagining this “perfect” family based on far fetched ideas.

I had a sister and many of my childhood memories are feeling bullied, scared to walk past her and depressed because of her not being a nice sister.

You have 3 children already, honestly count your blessings and focus on that.

ABeautifulThing · 07/11/2023 12:55

My relationship with my sister was awful, 18 years of toxic bullying until I could get away.
My DD has a brother who is her best friend. I envy her.
You've got some lovely examples of sisters too envy, but it isn't always like that.

AdoraBell · 07/11/2023 12:57

I have 3 sisters. Not in touch with any of them due to toxicity. Sane with brothers. It’s not automatic that sisters/brothers are perfect.

AdoraBell · 07/11/2023 12:57

Same, not sane 🤦‍♀️

ABeautifulThing · 07/11/2023 13:00

It's a personality thing, not a sex/gender thing!

KimberleyClark · 07/11/2023 13:00

I have an older brother who is a good friend although could be a PITA when we were children. I never hankered for a sister or a younger sibling. Just accepted the way things were.

Are yours young? I don’t see that so much in adults. My youngest sister is 6 years younger. I have two brothers closer in age.

I think this is true about setting myself up for disappointment and I’m trying to move myself along out of this rut 😊 I’m not usually like this, I’m usually very pragmatic!

I would have loved "a sister", but who knows who would have been born into that position in my life. Maybe we wouldn't have formed the bond I wished for. The concept is fine, but it's the reality of the individuals that makes a relationship, whatever position they have in the family.
