I got angry with nursery staff today

My DD wasn't allowed to come into nursery today because she's on antibiotics and it hadn't been 48 hours since she started the course - although she has actually been on antibiotics since Wednesday..

In any case, they have a rule which states that even though she's been on antibiotics since Wednesday, because they she was put on a different one on Saturday- that's what counts and it's therefore counted as if she only started Saturday - hence Monday morning makes it less that 48 hours.

Official websites suggest you need to stay off work / school for 24 hours after starting antibiotics.

In any case, I lost my cool a bit. No shouting by any means but I showed that I was less than impressed. I said something like ' it's just not good enough and a ridiculous rule '.

I've never done anything like that before with nursery as I am usually very very nice/ complaint with them, as they look after my precious baby. I was feeling super stressed as I missed a lot of work last week due to the illness and I'm really falling behind and had a lot of important meetings today, so really needed DD in nursery.

Would you apologise or just ignore ?

You sound entitled

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/11/2023 20:11

Apologise

TomatoSandwiches · 06/11/2023 20:11

I would apologise and reiterate you do appreciate how well they look after your DD.

Sunshineclouds11 · 06/11/2023 20:11

Yes apologise

Nov07 · 06/11/2023 20:12

You should apologise. You want to send your child to nursery when she is clearly unwell. Doesn't sound great to be honest.

CirceIsMyHomegirl · 06/11/2023 20:12

Of course you should apologise. Even if it is a stupid rule, you were rude.

Itrymybestyesido · 06/11/2023 20:12

I think you have been fair in your annoyance. You pay a lot of money for nursery and it sounds like someone was being a jobsworth. I understand there are rules but there should also be an element of common sense involved also in cases like this.

She sounds like a stressed out mother which is normal, but it doesn't excuse bad manners with childcare providers.

No she's not unwell anymore.

Apologise but ask for the rationale behind the rule... the room staff have no choice but to enforce it, but asking g why might make it easier to accept or challenge.

DysmalRadius · 06/11/2023 20:14

Why is that rule in place? I'd assume it's to ensure that there aren't any adverse reactions to the antibiotics, in which case it haha sense that a new prescription resets the clock.

TwiddlingMyToes · 06/11/2023 20:14

What's actually wrong with her that necessitates antibiotics? For me it would depend whether she was infectious.

But why did you tell them the antibiotic had changed? Surely you just tell them she's been taking them since last week?

Tweddle · 06/11/2023 20:15

Do you think the women you shouted at make the rule?

YikYok · 06/11/2023 20:15

I totally understand the work stress when my you thought you’d be back at work this week. I don’t think you sound entitled, I think you sound at the end of your tether - and I’m sure that’s what nursery will think if you are usually nice.

I would probably call the nursery manager and say, “I’m sorry I got cross yesterday talking to your staff. I was so sure I’d be able to bring dd, and I’m so exhausted from dd being sick and so behind on work, it was the last straw! I hope you can explain to the team that I didn’t mean to get cross with them, it was just the situation I found myself in.”

I know my nursery manager in this situation would have been unbelievably lovely about it all. Don’t worry, you are allowed to find it hard to cope sometimes, we have all been there.

I didn't shout at anyone

That rule sounds arbitrary and I don't blame you for feeling annoyed. Yes, not ideal to lose your temper, but I don't think you sound entitled.

LeedsZebra90 · 06/11/2023 20:16

I'd apologise, but i dont think you sound entitled. I have similar responses if I am stressed - especially when things are out of my control like your situation - but the policy is the policy, its no one's fault. you're fine to be annoyed as it is annoying, but just not great to take it out on nursery staff. Just explain you were having a bad day and apologise. Hope things get a bit easier once she is back in.

Because they said she's only been on this antibiotic since Saturday so she can't come in and I explained that actually she has been on antibiotics since Wednesday and then a different one from Saturday.

Yeah it states you need to stay off work for 24 hours after the antibiotics, not 48. That's ignoring the fact she'd been on other ones for many days before that. It just seemed like keeping a rule for a rules sake.

ColleenDonaghy · 06/11/2023 20:20

I think resetting the clock to 48 hours is fair enough given they have the period in case of a reaction to a new drug. But the 48 hour rule is ridiculous, ours is 24 hours and I think that's standard (assuming they're then well enough to attend, and we know how quickly kids can bounce back).

I would apologise but ask for the reasoning behind the rule and ask them to consider relaxing it to 24 hours if you can find guidance from the NHS that says that.

MontblancTheSecond · 06/11/2023 20:22

I would apologise and next time only tell what’s necessary.
And it does suck, those illnesses. Hope DD and you will feel better soon!

Sorry, I meant resetting it to Saturday was fair enough but I think you understood me! Good luck OP, it's awful when they're sick and you're up to your eyeballs.

What states this? The medication itself? I've only had antibiotics a couple of times but it wouldn't occur to me to stay off work unless I felt unwell. I've never known it to be a rule at any school I've taught in either.

angrym · 06/11/2023 20:24

@Cactifly nhs website states for these kinds of infections. Medicine doesn't state anything and I'm sure most people just go about their business as usual.
