Last weekend my husband, daughter and I went shopping for winter coats. I was really looking for a nice trenchcoat or ideally a woollen winter coat.
We walked past a luxury brand store that is known for really nice coats. Husband knows I love their coats and suggested we went inside. Normally I wouldn't even consider buying such an expensive clothing item, but husband insisted that I try on the coat I liked. He wanted to treat me if I ended up loving it, as he said it was a timeless item and he wanted to buy a nice Christmas/birthday gift that he knew I'd enjoy for years.

We asked the shop assistant for a size up in the coat I liked. It just didn't fit very nicely. Shop assistant then suggested I try on a couple of other (much more expensive[ coats. Those were really straight fitting coats though and I told her I preferred the other coat because it had a waist belt and didn't look so baggy.
She then told me "that coat maybe it was for you 20 years ago, now it's not for you".

My husband and I found this incredibly rude, but were too shocked to say anything. It ruined the shopping for me though, so we left immediately and husband told her that we didn't want a coat anymore. He was really angry. I am now 44 years old and tried the size 14, which fitted but pulled across the chest. Surely that's not incredibly old or fat to deserve a remark like that? Also what's with the '20 years ago' I really don't even look that old!

AIBU that I found this incredibly offensive and also I think that had I looked really rich she would never have said anything like that? Also I really don't want a coat from that store anymore...

What was the store?

MadeOfAllWork · 06/11/2023 12:57

How rude. It’s your choice. If you looked like a sack of crap perhaps she could have given you more options.

Moltenpink · 06/11/2023 12:57

Who on earth is voting YABU?

Lemsipper · 06/11/2023 12:58

You are only being unreasonable if you don’t a) say which shop and b) post a link to the coat.

that aside, no matter what the coat looks like….she was so rude and you should report her to the store manager

Oreosareawful · 06/11/2023 12:58

Having worked in retail, you sell anything to anyone without batting an eyelid. That is what being professional is all about.

YANBU

Irridescantshimmmer · 06/11/2023 13:02

Its against the law for a start OP. She was rude and offesive as well as her being ageist.

If I was you, I'd complain. The assistant needs a repirimand so she learns to keep her rude attitude to herself.

ManateeFair · 06/11/2023 13:04

YANBU. What an awful thing to say.

MaliciaKeys · 06/11/2023 13:04

What a spiteful comment, name and shame the store.

I don't know if it's allowed to post a brand name here, let's say it's a brand well known for their trenchcoats and the pattern on the lining?
I tried on a woollen coat that looked like a fitted trenchcoat. Does that help? 😀

Honestly I even felt intimidated walking into the store, even though as a 44 year old woman I know that's ridiculous. But my husband said: who cares it's just a store and you've always wanted a coat like that.. go and try it on...

Name and shame OP!

Littlelucas · 06/11/2023 13:06

Burberry?

CrappyBarbara · 06/11/2023 13:07

Got it. Rhymes with Mermerry?

cryinglaughing · 06/11/2023 13:08

Burberry is chavtastic, you did right to walk away.

TheGoddessFrigg · 06/11/2023 13:08

OMG I think I would have burst into tears on the spot. That's so rude. Does she not realise that as you get older, you (hopefully) have more money to spend?
Or does se think they should only be selling to 18yr old supermodels?

Actually my husband got so angry, he actually did send a complaint to the store today. I don't expect any answer though. But it made him feel better 😁

Is it? Well I had a lucky escape then!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 06/11/2023 13:12

Ha I guessed Burberry from OP.

I honestly would complain. It was a horrible, ageist comment, and it cost them a sale. They're not so popular I don't anymore are they? Not amongst the younger market I don't think, and the football hooligans have moved on, so why alienate your target market?

cryinglaughing · 06/11/2023 13:13

Good for your dh making a complaint.
Cheeky bitch needs to be made aware about the error of her ways!

VeridicalVagabond · 06/11/2023 13:14

What a bitch.

This is literally what "the customer is always right" actually means - "the customer is always right in matters of taste"

As in "shut your pie hole you snooty cow, your opinion is meaningless ". If you liked the coat that should've been enough, none of her business to tell you what you "should" or "shouldn't " wear.

Sorry you had that experience OP, hope you get a nice coat elsewhere from a less snobby individual!

GellerYeller · 06/11/2023 13:16

Go get a nicer one with a nicer in store experience elsewhere then go back to Mermerry Pretty Woman style… I’m kidding of course, but how lovely of your husband to do this for you. You deserve better than snarky comments.

funbags3 · 06/11/2023 13:18

That brand is awful. You had a lucky escape.
