Is coming to our Sunday roast dinner today. My son has invited his new gf (great!) but only just told me she's pescatarian. We are having roast gammon with roasties, carrots, broccoli etc. what could I make her (or pref buy - I'm not feeling that great) that would go with the same sides?

A salmon fillet. Pop it in the airfryer or pan fry it; it will go well with potatoes and broccoli.

JustCheckingUp · 05/11/2023 07:42

Pop to a supermarket (or send your son!) and grab a vegan fillet to go with the veggies. Make sure you don’t use meat juice on any veggies and the gravy. Done!

VisionsOfSplendour · 05/11/2023 07:45

How old is your son, why did he choose to invite her to a meal that he knows will involve you in extra work? Wont the girl feel awkward, a mid week meal would be much better all round imo

Peepshowcreepshow · 05/11/2023 07:46

I think a mushroom wellington type thing or similar (and a veggie gravy) would go better than a piece of fish with a roast dinner.

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 05/11/2023 07:47

Off topic but i know a 'pescaterian' who eats duck...
Because its a water bird 😶😶
But yes the salmon idea.

SummaLuvin · 05/11/2023 07:47

if you're doing a full roast with roasted potatoes & parsnips, steamed veg, cauliflower/broccoli cheese, Yorkshires, and (meat free) gravy I think that would be fine without additional items. The veggies I am close to much prefer another couple of roasties than veggie meat substitute, and I don't think fish would work. And it is last minute.

RampantIvy · 05/11/2023 07:50

I would ask the son to go to the supermarket and buy domething suitable. It is on him for not giving you the heads up in plenty of time.

bubblicious47 · 05/11/2023 07:50

Will do caulk cheese (is only me that likes it so a good excuse to add it) and the gammon is going in the slow cooker so no juices added to anything until the gravy, can do a separate sauce. I did wonder if salmon might be odd. Will pop to supermarket and look at vegan range.
Would send son but he's ND and not very experienced. Hence why we are so happy re gf and willing to put up with late notice. Everyone welcome to a Sunday dinner here

That’s lovely she’s coming but since it’s last minute and you’re not well!! she can either eat you’ve made without meats or your son goes out and buys her something and he prepares it, it’s not fair on you running about last second and you’re poorly!

That ridiculous 🤣
Almost as bad as when my eldest asked 'is duck a fish' because they served it at Yo Sushi

Mine always got a quorn ‘chicken’ thing with a roast. If you want to be fancy though. the freezers of all the supermarkets are full of veggie roast dinner mains.
lidl do a salmon in lattice pastry thing which is lovely. Comes in packs of two individual ones and no trouble to throw in the oven.

bubblicious47 · 05/11/2023 07:53

To be fair I didn't know I didn't feel well until I woke up

OP posts:
All2Well · 05/11/2023 07:53

Quorn do gammon style steaks and a ham roast.

Or you could serve fish without the gravy. Breaded lemon sole, cauliflower cheese, peas and roast potatoes is a standard meal for us.

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 05/11/2023 07:53

@bubblicious47 mid 20s male? Similar mind set ! 😆

parietal · 05/11/2023 07:54

i'd definitely do salmon. much better than the slightly odd meat substitute options.

bubblicious47 · 05/11/2023 07:55

Thanks for all the suggestions. With a houseful of meat loving men I'm always a bit unsure about veggie options even tho I'd like to do more meat free meals

Agree a veggie or vegan Wellington or pie would be good.

Actually salmon en croute would be good - there might be a ready made one in the supermarket.

Do you use animal fat for your roast potatoes?

MyCircumference · 05/11/2023 07:56

or some veggie sausages?

my bf dm used to make me an omelette with the roast, it was always huge though

I agree, I'm a vegetarian and don't eat meat substitutes because they're pretty grim.

mummyh2016 · 05/11/2023 07:59

I'd say salmon but then you'd have to do a sauce with it unless she had it dry! Veggie sausages? At least she could have gravy.

Caroparo52 · 05/11/2023 08:01

Don't panic.
It's not too difficult..
if you are having stuffing .. and being a lazy arse myself I mean Paxo, I add few nuts and seeds and even dried fruit to that and voila a nut roast 🙂

RampantIvy · 05/11/2023 08:02

DD always has veggie sausages if she goes out for a roast.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 05/11/2023 08:02

My son usually has a veggie parcel in pastry from Aldi with his Sunday lunch, and he gets an extra Yorkshire pudding. Hope it goes really well.

It's just following traditional fasting rules. The 15th century Council of Constance defined "fish" as anything that lives in water, hence including beavers. Allegedly leading some monasteries to drown piglets in their ponds in order to re-classify them. And then there's the apocryphal abbot who solemnly baptized a roast piglet as "carp."

Maybe worth a try for new gf?

Badatthis · 05/11/2023 08:05

Definitely beaver steak with a side of duck beak.
