Is coming to our Sunday roast dinner today. My son has invited his new gf (great!) but only just told me she's pescatarian. We are having roast gammon with roasties, carrots, broccoli etc. what could I make her (or pref buy - I'm not feeling that great) that would go with the same sides?

As a life long veggie i do not agree that anyone would be happy with more sides instead of a veggie option and would not enjoy this "meal" at all. they are sides for a reason. they do not constitute a meal. your friends might not like meat substitutes but there are plenty of actual veggie dishes available that aren't fake meat. your friends might also be trying to be polite. i don't know anyone who would be happy with a meal made up of side dishes. so i came here to say don't do this. it would make me feel uncomfortable and very aware that i was an after thought / a bit of a nuisance you couldn't be bothered to (easily) cater for. bunging a pre made goats cheese tart in the oven is not hard.

Edited

I would be happy, and it's often exactly what I have myself. I go to Toby Carvery and have a plate full of "sides". I don't feel hard done by.

A salmon fillet. Pop it in the airfryer or pan fry it; it will go well with potatoes and broccoli.

This sort of thing - ask your DS what fish she likes and get the bung in the oven version of it.

fish is amazing baked, fried, in a curry etc. Very easy and fast to cook as well. As it’s cold maybe with potato on top. I like good very well seasoned but with a good sauce.

Excellent idea!

You can give his GF the fillet and your DS a ding round the lughole for leaving important information intil the last minute.

Otherwise, apologise profusely to GF and explain to her that her BF is an idiot. Do not omit the ding whatever happens.

For future reference, lidl do nice individual frozen vegetarian wellingtons, I have them for short notice dd visits, both are now vegetarian though one will eat fish at a pinch, being frozen then just sit in the freezer until an emergency meal is required, they are quite saucy negating the need for veggie gravy (though lidls "meat" gravy is vegan!

Aldi have just started doing a Camembert, Mushroom and Parsnip pie. It’s my new favourite.

Yum! Adding to my aldi shopping list now…

bubblicious47 · 05/11/2023 13:11

Goodness - seems like there are strong opinions here!
Well I've made the cauliflower cheese, and DH is going to Aldi/Waitrose and will get salmon and a vege alternative. We can then ask what she'd prefer. It's all very new so we just want her to feel comfortable. She's already having to meet my mum!

My favourite fish is tilapia. Wrap in paper with baby spinach and asparagus, pop in oven.
Yum

But veggies are weirdos to the kind of people who chow down on scorched flesh three times a day. They call themselves vegetarians? Give 'em the vegetables.

10HailMarys · 05/11/2023 13:21

My mum’s pescetarian and is always very happy just to have a plate of sides when there’s a roast being served, especially when there’s something like cauliflower cheese included. But something like an individual supermarket veg pie or something would also be fine, I’m sure, or a salmon fillet as others have suggested.

I suspect she will be more than happy with whatever you put in front of her, as she’ll be a lot more nervous about this meal than you.

Will do caulk cheese (is only me that likes it so a good excuse to add it) and the gammon is going in the slow cooker so no juices added to anything until the gravy, can do a separate sauce. I did wonder if salmon might be odd. Will pop to supermarket and look at vegan range.
Would send son but he's ND and not very experienced. Hence why we are so happy re gf and willing to put up with late notice. Everyone welcome to a Sunday dinner here

What time do you want me then @bubblicious47 ?

dcsp · 05/11/2023 13:43

I'm a veggie and my general preference is to have something which is as similar as possible to what the meat-eaters are having. In this case that'd be a quorn ham roast, which are very nice... But I'd expect her (via your son) to give you some guidance as her preference may be different.

The thing I'm not a big fan of is what I'd call "a meat-eater's idea of veggie food" by this I mean that a lot of meat eaters may sometimes have a veggie meal when they just fancy something quick and light, so their ideas of a veggie meal is something like an omelette or some quiche or cauliflower cheese (as a main rather than a side) rather than what I'd consider to be a proper meal.

People seem to be getting confused over the definition of a pescatarian. A pescatarian eats fish but not meat. It’s not the same as a vegan. As a pescatarian I would be upset to be presented with a lentil surprise as my dinner. Grin

I'm a pescatarian and the thought of fish on a roast dinner makes me feel a bit grim. I like gravy and (for me) gravy and fish does not mix.

Newnametoavoidtrouble · 05/11/2023 15:07

We have a pescatarian in our family, so often prepare food for her.

Salmon en croute, is popular for a special meal. Home made pizza can be popular, Pilchards or sardines or mackerel fillets with anchovies.
Worth checking with her on shell fish, Mussels and prawns are not always popular.
