Is coming to our Sunday roast dinner today. My son has invited his new gf (great!) but only just told me she's pescatarian. We are having roast gammon with roasties, carrots, broccoli etc. what could I make her (or pref buy - I'm not feeling that great) that would go with the same sides?

Or is it bill?

MurielThrockmorton · 05/11/2023 08:06

Don't get ultra processed meat, substitution options, unless you know that she eats them, many people don't. I'd probably look for something like the mushroom wellington, nut roast, or maybe even stuffed peppers if the flavours go.

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 05/11/2023 08:07

Oooo @GrumpyPanda that's so interesting!!

Bouledeneige · 05/11/2023 08:09

I'd do salmon. That's what my pescatarian DD has at Christmas.

MyCircumference · 05/11/2023 08:09

there are fussy pescatarians though, who dont like mushrooms for eg, can you ask him what she would like?

Tiredtable · 05/11/2023 08:10

I am pescatarian. A piece of salmon would be great. Veggie sausages also great. Some strange meat substitute thing that you host has got in especially for you and asks eight times whether you are enjoying it when you might not even like it equals stressful. Salmon or veggie sausages are safe options. Don't overthink it.

Hotcuppatea · 05/11/2023 08:10

I'd do smoked haddock. It's salty like the gammon and would go well with your veg. Don't get her an ultra processed vegan meat substitute. They're absolutely rank.

Mummumgem · 05/11/2023 08:11

I’m a pescatarian, if I was coming to you today salmon would be my first choice over meat substitute any day, served with cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, steamed veg and I would be in heaven
just make sure you potato’s aren’t cooked in goose fat !

Whataretheodds · 05/11/2023 07:56

Agree a veggie or vegan Wellington or pie would be good.

Actually salmon en croute would be good - there might be a ready made one in the supermarket.

Do you use animal fat for your roast potatoes?

Only use animal fat at Xmas - have fantastic roasties with olive oil

A piece of fish wrapped in a parcel with a splash of oil and wine and some herbs wrapped in foil and chucked in the oven 20 minutes before you serve. Please no ready meals. You want her to feel welcome!

Off topic but i know a 'pescaterian' who eats duck...
Because its a water bird 😶😶
But yes the salmon idea.

Ha ha. My young child has just announced she is becoming a pescaterian but can I make her a bacon sandwhich first.

LeakyPipes · 05/11/2023 08:19

My sister, the vegetarian, suggests sardines on toast :)

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 05/11/2023 08:20

Please don't buy a meat substitute, she's pescatarian, get her some fish! There's loads of options, fish pie, any plain fish, salmon Wellington. Get a couple of sauces which you guys would eat and let her pick one.

I'd be so disappointed if I was given a meat substitute, they are all vile

Goldwhisper · 05/11/2023 08:22

I’m pescatarian and much prefer something like this with a roast rather than salmon or vegan alternative to meat 😊

It's just following traditional fasting rules. The 15th century Council of Constance defined "fish" as anything that lives in water, hence including beavers. Allegedly leading some monasteries to drown piglets in their ponds in order to re-classify them. And then there's the apocryphal abbot who solemnly baptized a roast piglet as "carp."

Maybe worth a try for new gf?

Thank you for that wonderful nugget of knowledge, completely new to me, and which passed me by during years of studying Medieval History at a Catholic school, @GrumpyPanda Halloween Grin

bubblicious47 · 05/11/2023 08:39

Wow love the look of the Emmental parcels! I'm a coeliac so don't eat or make pastry, that could be a good option. I have salmon in so I think I'll let her choose. Lots of dissent between what people like, I guess it's v personal!

Loads of people are allergic to Quorn so check she’s not or you won’t want her in your house 💨 🤢

lilyblue5 · 05/11/2023 08:45

Salmon en croute with a roast is lush. IMO

AnxiousPangolin · 05/11/2023 08:50

People seem to be getting confused over the definition of a pescatarian. A pescatarian eats fish but not meat. It’s not the same as a vegan. As a pescatarian I would be upset to be presented with a lentil surprise as my dinner. Grin

tabulahrasa · 05/11/2023 08:50

Honestly - the cauliflower cheese with the other stuff would be fine.

I’d be quite happy with that over a bad meat substitute or something that doesn’t really go.

Normal bistro is vegetarian btw.

SummaLuvin · 05/11/2023 08:51

heads up OP, if you are making cauliflower cheese be sure to check whatever cheese you use is veggie, many varieties like parmesan are not.

Sarvanga38 · 05/11/2023 08:53

If you just want to throw some money at something easy as you’re not well, the Charlie Bingham salmon en croutes are lovely.

TheDogthatDug · 05/11/2023 08:55

Aldi/Lidl do some nice vegetarian/vegan dishes. Lidl vegan nut roast with gravy is delicious. I'm not vegetarian BTW

Lemsipper · 05/11/2023 08:57

Salmon en croute vote
