Just fucking sick of dogs

1000 replies

crazyaginglady · 03/11/2023 19:00

Sorry but I am. I was cycling home from
picking up DS from school with him on the back and a dog came running up beside
me snarling and snapping at my feet on the pedals. I nearly bloody went over but managed to keep my balance and get past it (electric bike). Owner called an apology and I just rode on as it was still off the lead and I was worried for DS.

This is a national cycling path and much used school route so there are always bikes and children 8-9 and 3-4.

A sausage dog decided to bolt towards my 2 year old last month in the park for no apparent reason and I had to scoop him
up to avoid contact.

And don’t get me started in the ‘oh he’s just being friendly’. I don’t want your fucking dog jumping on me or my children or scaring my kids when we are just going about our day.

They should ALL be on leads unless they are in a dog park/field.

It's the shops and cafes and restaurants that bother me. I don't want animals in places were food is served it's disgusting.

I agree on that one

Nannylovesshopping · 04/11/2023 18:49

I have a rescue spaniel, ten years old now, had her since she was three, she doesn’t particularly like other dogs, apart from my daughters two, always on lead till we get to the woods, very rarely see other dogs as no where to park, occasionally there is another dog who bounds up enthusiastically, my dog is cowering, owner calls, it’s ok, he’s friendly, my answer, well I’m fucking not, call your bloody dog off! generally works as I have a resting bitch face as well.

If you really want to be free of dogs off lead, you really need to be on the road, not shared spaces.

The entitlement! Just sums up the majority of dog owners to me.

As I said in my post, but you chose to ignore, when using shared spaces I do my best to be considerate of others, both as a dog owner and a cyclist. It's actually not difficult. 🙄

When I take the dog to the park, yes she is off lead once we're in the park. She runs around the grass, when she's on the path, she usually trots alongside me. If she does go off I keep an eye on her and call her if she gets too close to children, cyclists or other dogs.

When I'm cycling in parks etc I am hyper vigilant and cycle more slowly than on the road, being aware that a dog, a child or a ball (from either a dog or child) can pop out any time. I dont think its too much to ask for cyclists, parents and dog owners to be similarly aware. I dont think it's too much us ask for everyone to be kind to other users.

Shoesareamazing · 04/11/2023 19:06

I am a dog owner and completely agree with you. I have a fear that a dog off the lead is going to run over and attack my dog. A couple have jumped on my dog in the past. For this reason I stick to areas where dogs are unlikely to be off the lead when I’m walking. On the rare occasion I do venture off the road I only let one of my 2 dogs off the lead and that’s because she does not leave my side. The other dog runs too far ahead so he stays on his lead.
I do see where you are coming from. When you don’t know the dog and it just runs up
to you it can be frightening.

PEEDOFFFACE · 04/11/2023 19:15

I don't mind dogs but hate when they won't leave people alone and the owners act like we are at fault. We went crabbing this summer. Woman in the water and she had a dog with her. The dog ran out of the water and jumped all over us and tried to eat the bacon. Her response " don't come by the water if unless you expect to get wet". So we moved way down the beach. 15 minutes later the dog came over again freaking out my 3 year old. She just stood there shouting it ( which it ignored) I mean the dog looked very playful but it's not her own private area, if you can't recall your dog keep it on a lead

Here comes the belittling of people's experiences......

Exactly. Stark’s dismissive comment says it all about idiot dog owners who think the world revolves around them and sod everyone else. The ‘anecdotes’ are not irrelevant to those who’ve been injured or killed by dogs.

Jo586 · 04/11/2023 19:19

Totally fed up with the number of dogs around nowadays it seems to have exploded since lockdown. Damn things are everywhere, I was in York recently and it seems the stone corner of each shop had dog wee on it. At least the owners use poo bags nowadays at least least in the uk in France they just leave them, disgusting.

Lindyloomillion1 · 04/11/2023 19:20

I completely be agree with you!
Just reminded me of an incident recently where I arrived to meet with friends a bit early. I was sat on the clifftop on a wooden bench. I was looking around for my friends and saw a youngish man pushing a pram, with woman and dog kind of inexplicably close behind my bench. I tried to turn round enough to see what they were doing. THEY WERE LETTING THE DOG PISS ON THE BENCH I WAS SITTING ON!
By the time I'd realised what had happened they were too far away and I watched as the man lifted the dog into (what I had assumed was) a baby's pram.
Revolting, entitled people.

BogHag · 04/11/2023 19:21

The overwhelming majority of dogs / dog owners I meet while out and about are pleasant and respectful but as with many things the few exceptions give everyone a bad name. I have become much more aware of the issue now that I have a toddler. He’s very good about dogs - not scared at all and knows not to approach them without asking first - but I’m forever on guard when there are dogs about for dog poos and the naughty ones.

One thing I see all the time which makes me furious is people who have bagged their dog’s poos and then left the bag on the ground or hanging from a tree branch. Literally what is the point? It would be better to leave it unbagged where at least it could biodegrade without leeching plastic into the environment and making everything uglier. Anyone who does this is a proper twat.

AngieMayB · 04/11/2023 19:36

Too many rude, inconsiderate people unfit to have dogs, and they are well on the way to spoiling it for everyone. The way things are going, eventually all dogs will have to be muzzled when out by law.

Blueink · 04/11/2023 19:36

It’s not the dogs, it’s the unaware, undisciplined owners!

Agree the dog needs to be under control of the owner and not just left to their own devices when there are strangers around.

Had a few issues with dogs jumping up & knocking over, causing scrapes and bruises, pain due to exacerbating hidden injuries as well as emotional distress/fear.

According to the owner, who is not even close enough, to grab them “they just want to play” (nice but now DS is bleeding and terrified of all dogs) or worse the owner hasn’t even noticed as their head is so far up their arse.

Some lovely owners and dogs though!

😴
The amount of dog haters on MN is weird. There's at least 3 threads a week complaining about them. I take my dog to the park daily and left her off lead. I call her when cyclists are getting near and she responds well. My dog is an energetic collie and she needs to be let of lead to have a good run, it;s her breed to need lots of exercise.

OTOH I'm also cycle but when cycling in parks etc I go slow because as well as dogs there are also children, (often on bikes or playing with balls) joggers (often with ear buds in) etc etc and I do my best to be share spaces carefully.

If you really want to be free of dogs off lead, you really need to be on the road, not shared spaces.

“If you really want to be free of dogs off lead, you really need to be on the road, not shared spaces”

Wait, what?! You’re telling me that your dog’s need for shared spaces takes priority over mine?

Africa2004 · 04/11/2023 19:45

the poo!! Everywhere. Even if they scoop it up, surely there’s traces of it everywhere we step. Yuck.

Mummadeze · 04/11/2023 19:49

I literally said to my daughter today, I wish dogs didn’t exist. A planet populated by people, cats and some other harmless animals would be so much better. Dogs are either scary, dangerous or annoying in my view. The odd small one can be nice, but they are few and far between.

LePanthere · 04/11/2023 19:56

Goodornot · 04/11/2023 08:05

Why the hostility, you don't know what I saw.

In a cafe with food on a self serve counter, owner let's its precious dog stand up on its hind legs and have a good sniff / lick of the food.

I walked back out.

Now get a grip and control your dog in public. It's obvious the owner you are.

Dogs are revolting creatures.

Except that’s not what you said in your original post at all.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 also I am extremely allergic to dogs and don’t own any so perhaps you are wholly wrong about ‘what type of owner I am’

if you find dogs disgusting- don’t own one, but the whole world does not pander to your whims so you absolutely cannot expect a closet ban on dogs in public spaces to suit your sensitivities. Grow up.

Interesting that many people would ban dogs but not cats.
Cats coming into my garden and shitting on my property where my children play is absolutely vile. Of course we may get wild animals but when it’s a pet that someone has chosen to have, I feel differently. I don’t want to have a shitting gross cat in the space I own.

Linnette49 · 04/11/2023 19:59

Totally agree with you evilelsa. I’m a dog lover as well and never let my dog of the lead other than when we take him to special dog play areas. We pay £3 for half an hour but Ozzie loves it even though he’s on his own. Other times he’s always on his lead. I see so many walkers with their dogs not on lead and I get so annoyed. We need more wardens out there to deal with this.

LePanthere · 04/11/2023 20:02

Margerine78 · 04/11/2023 17:47

I'm sick of kids harassing my dog, got a rescue puppy recently and two kids chased him down the length of my local park whilst the mother looked on yelling at me that my dog was "loving it" as he was wagging his tail. He was massively scared and irate and I had warned her I did not think he was yet socialised around kids and to keep them away. I agree some dog owners are shit, and the woman should've put dog back on lead immediately but it works both ways.

If he’s not socialised yet and your not sure how he would react why is he off the lead?

Cakeandcoffeea · 04/11/2023 20:05

I agree and I have a dog. He’s always on a lead because dogs can be unpredictable at best. I also have children and it just pisses me off when dogs are left to roam free and Jump on people, and the owner just Shouts, “he’s friendly”! I don’t care if he’s friendly. I don’t want to be jumped on or barked at by a strange dog 😶

78Summer · 04/11/2023 20:06

I agree. Grew up with lovely dogs but they were on a lead most of the time and trained.

A bully type dog leapt up at my elderly dad recently and the owner then had a go at him for complaining. So many are off the lead and untrained. I was in Greenwich park and a ‘friendly’ one was leaping round me in circles biting my coat while his owner raced after him. Glad my coat was so thick or it would be very painful. It’s very worrying for kids in open spaces.

Hoping this phase of so many dogs everywhere wears off!

Why do we need dog wardens to deal with it? It’s not illegal for dogs to be off lead in lots of places, people letting their dogs off aren’t actually doing anything wrong so long as their dogs do no harm.

one of my dogs is very elderly, has had strokes and can be for want of a better word a bit vacant. It takes her a while to realise what’s been said to her so I only let her off in really safe places with not many others around. She’s tiny, toothless and friendly and couldn’t harm anyone if she tried, but may wander into the path of a passing cyclist without realising. So she’s mainly on a lead.

My younger medium sized dog has fantastic recall and I’ve worked really hard to make sure she does what she’s told when she’s off lead. She’s a high energy breed and needs to run or she would be depressed. If a cyclist comes all I have to do is call wait and down and she will lie to the side until they pass. There’s no reason she can’t be off the lead in most places where there’s not a lot of traffic. She likes people, but has been taught never to go up to them uninvited, she isn’t keen on other dogs and if they charge her she may growl, but no more and mostly just wants them to leave her alone and will walk on ignoring them. She would never run up to an on lead dog or anything like that. Why should dogs like her suffer because some people (a very small minority in my personal experience) can’t be arsed to train their dogs.

I also would have scooped up the sausage dog to protect him from a 2 year old.

Many would say the same about men.

Anyway, are guide dogs, sniffer dogs, therapy dogs, the various police dogs (there are dogs trained to find things like mobile phones and SIM cards), cadaver dogs, search and rescue dogs etc

Because you are in a public park, and other members of the public have no idea whether your dog is trained or not. Seeing a dog off the lead when I am out with my kids means I have to be extra vigilant to ensure they aren’t knocked over etc. I wouldn’t have to be vigilant if your dog was on a lead and it would be a much more pleasant experience for us and other park users.

I think all public parks will be lead only in the future. It will make going to the park and exercising a much more relaxing experience. If you want a dog, get a house with a garden big enough to exercise it in. Don’t expect other members of the public to have to endure your lifestyle choices.

It’s very worrying for kids in open spaces.

This is my main issue. It’s a shame dc have to change their activities in open spaces due to dogs running up, jumping on them in some cases, plus most will be ok but not guaranteed
