Just fucking sick of dogs

crazyaginglady · 03/11/2023 19:00

Sorry but I am. I was cycling home from
picking up DS from school with him on the back and a dog came running up beside
me snarling and snapping at my feet on the pedals. I nearly bloody went over but managed to keep my balance and get past it (electric bike). Owner called an apology and I just rode on as it was still off the lead and I was worried for DS.

This is a national cycling path and much used school route so there are always bikes and children 8-9 and 3-4.

A sausage dog decided to bolt towards my 2 year old last month in the park for no apparent reason and I had to scoop him
up to avoid contact.

And don’t get me started in the ‘oh he’s just being friendly’. I don’t want your fucking dog jumping on me or my children or scaring my kids when we are just going about our day.

They should ALL be on leads unless they are in a dog park/field.

@Maatandosiris why is it relevant that you hate cyclists? Same question to all those criticising cyclists really.

I was riding in a reasonable way, about 10 ft clear of anyone, to the side and on a shared path. The dog came at me and DS from an adjoining field. I get that some people find cyclists annoying but it’s not the point here.

It is the point. We all have our likes and dislikes, None of the actions of these dogs would bother me in the slightest. You state your dislike as being dogs. I’m stating my dislike as being cyclists.

what did you start the thread for? What were you hoping to get out of it?

ChewbaccasMrs · 03/11/2023 22:15

I love Dogs,we always had Dogs in our family when I was growing up and we have Dogs of our own now but I would have gone fucking nuclear if someone's Dog had nearly had me and my DC of a bike or had charged at my toddler.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with some dog owners it's like their bloody brain dead and yet people wonder why so many children and adults are fearful of dogs.

If someone can't control and train their dog properly or keep it on a lead they shouldn't bloody have one.

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 03/11/2023 22:15

Never found a post that I agree with as much as this one. It’s the sheer number of dogs that are about now. I’m sure 30 years ago much fewer people had dogs. Now every other house has a dog. The number of people with terribly behaved dogs since covid is ridiculous too. At least half the people I know with dogs regret getting them too (comments about having to stay home because of them etc).

Only thing worse is the number of bloody cats that shit everywhere.

all 4 houses around me have a dog each and 2 have a cat each as well. Luckily none of them are a massive problem, but just illustrated to me how common dog ownership is now.

Stressedafff · 03/11/2023 22:15

I’m fed up too. I’m allergic to them and they’re just everywhere, cannot wait til dog mania dies down

You have my 100% support OP.

We have a relative who uses a manual wheelchair. Stepping in dog shit is one issue. Getting it on the wheels of the chair, then having to go on pushing those wheels is quite another 🤢

As for "He's just being friendly" well I'm not. Piss off you horrible mutt, I am not part of your friendship group.

You and I are in a minority though OP. All the dog lovers will hate us 😂

My god🤢🤢 Of course! Of course this must and does happen!!😡.

Poor wheelchair users!! It had never occurred to me before. Disgusting!! How antisocial can it be to leave your dogs excrement on the pavement where people traverse, or the grass, where children play?!!

Appallingly selfish.

That said I don't know why I am surprised. I live near a victorian cemetery. I think less people have been buried there since 1850+ than the amount of dog turds! The place stinks if the heat rises. People have zero respect and I don't think dogs should be permitted in such places!! Yet everyday there are hundreds walked and allowed to toilet there. The graveyard.

But nothing is sacred as far as dogs are in this country.

Sick of seeing them...in shops, cafes just everywhere. I just walk out now as soon as I see one in a shop/cafe. No business from me. As far as I'm concerned it just devalues anything a company has to offer/sell it It allows dogs. So unhygenic.

Well we go into these places because they allow dogs so i guess the owners weigh up which is more profitable.

crazyaginglady · 03/11/2023 22:20

@Maatandosiris you honestly wouldn’t be bothered if a dog came chasing you and your 4yo child nearly knocking you off your bike whilst growling and trying to bite your feet? if a husky ran up and jumped at you nearly knocking you over at 40w pregnant and scratching your pregnant stomach? And there are many many other stories in this thread similar.

I don’t disagree re cyclists, they should ride safely and wind me up when they don’t and there should be better enforcement of the Highway Code. One view doesn’t cancel out the other so it’s not the point.

Agree, hunts are full of complete arseholes. They don't come here anymore because they get bother, more people agree than not.

Another dog owner here that completely agrees with OP. Dog owners can be so entitled!

not really. If a dog chased me on my bike - I’d stop my bike to stop the movement thst it was chasing.I’d have pushed the husky down before it got off its front legs. Not great dog ownership but I’d be a bit meh!

abominablesnowman · 03/11/2023 22:25

"He's just being friendly" is not a valid excuse when a strange man tries being overly 'friendly' with you and it shouldn't be a valid excuse for dogs.
I am not a friend of dogs. I do not consent to him being 'friendly'. I try to keep a wide berth from dogs but sometimes they really want to come up to you.

I think this problem has been largely caused by the fact that there are just so many of the damn things. I don't know the statistics but I swear the shear number of dogs has skyrocketed in the past ten years, so inevitably there are more of them around to be in the way, and more of them that are totally untrained and unsuited to public life.

TheCave · 03/11/2023 22:33

Totally agree. Recent incidents I've had:

  1. Dog goes berserk at my child in a cafe. My child did absolutely nothing to provoke it. Owner explanation: "he doesn't like children", no apology. The cafe is located in a very family friendly Common area. Dog shouldn't have been allowed in if it doesn't react well to children.
  2. We went for a meal over the summer in Cornwall. The restaurant was relatively expensive with gourmet food. People were smart / smart casual. Not a place you'd take young kids to - definitely a date night / special occasion kind of place. Table behind us had a small dog. Which was fine (although I don't really expect dogs in restaurants, a pub or cafe maybe but not a fancy restaurant) until said dog vomited on the floor. And the owners didn't even notice. We had to discretely point it out so that it could all be dealt with. Generally everywhere we went in Cornwall we were basically tripping over dogs. Including on dog-free beaches.
pickyourown · 03/11/2023 22:36

We went for a walk last weekend with the DCs. Sat on a bench to have our picnic and 3 bloody dogs ran up to us trying to get the food. Cue the usual “oooh hahahah sorry about that hahaha” (whilst slooowly wondering over to fetch dog).
No. F**k off and put a lead on it if you can’t recall it.

Goodornot · 03/11/2023 22:37

@TheCave I've had similar in an expensive restaurant. In this case the dog was whining and yapping for food at people's tables, not just their owners.

I finally asked them to deal with their pet as I'm not feeding it and don't want to be barked at.

When did this become acceptable. Dogs used to be left at home unless they were being walked.

And I'm fucking fed up of cyclists on the pavement, flying around the local park at high speed (limit 5mph clearly displayed), going through red lights, etc etc. But fortunately I don't think every cyclist is a complete pillock. Just a lot of them.

the 5mph is for motor cars/ trucks and not cyclists

Banana1979 · 03/11/2023 22:41

I wholeheartedly agree with you. My neighbour has two great big fucking XL bullies. They are the size of lions no lie about it I’ve never seen such two dogs so big . The pictures on the Internet do not do them justice
many time I get in the lift, neighbour has tried to get in the lift with me and my DC . I have told my neighbour, I do not want to share a lift with two massive dogs who may view us as a threat in a tiny lift . If they were to get hold of me, there is nothing I can do. Plus dogs can feel threatened if cornered -

im not knocking them just for being alive . However, but the owner seems oblivious that some people are afraid of these dogs

local park where I live seems to be full of dogs. It seems everybody has a dog. They are constantly pissing up lampposts walls in the summer or you could see is piss spots everywhere. You cannot walk or sit for being accosted by dogs. I don’t dislike dogs, however, I don’t have a strong care toward them either.

foxlover47 · 03/11/2023 22:43

I absolutely
Love my three dogs I really do
But that's me !
Mine are always on their lead under control and only free when they are at their paid for enclosed dog park time.
I wish people
Would just keep their dogs on a lead

Banana1979 · 03/11/2023 22:43

Drdoomish · 03/11/2023 19:17

That's because the feckless owners give MNers something to complain about.

I had breakfast last week in an expensive restaurant. A large dog kept coming up to us sniffing, licking and wagging.

Owners "he's just being friendly"
Us "he's spoiling our breakfast. Please keep him away". Ignored.

We complained to staff. They were young. They would "pass our concerns onto the managers ". They didn't have the maturity to talk to the dog owners.

We asked to speak to a manager. They repeated the same line and didn't speak to the owners either.

Our breakfast had been ruined by this point. We left. We won't be returning.

Dogs used to be pets that stayed at home and were only taken on walks. They were perfectly content. Why on earth do people need to baby their dogs? They're animals, pets. That's all.

I say this as a dog owner.

@Drdoomish I wouldn’t have paid
I would have said dog licked the food, or dog hair got I. The food therefore I am not eating or paying it and walked out
you are within your rights

god that must have been terrifying!
Dogs in parks are a reality, and you seem to be heading towards instilling a fear of the. In your child, which will cause all sorts of problems down the line.

Isittimeformynapyet · 03/11/2023 22:44

GreyhpundGirl · 03/11/2023 19:13

The owners are the problem. Direct your anger at them, not the dogs. I have two greyhounds who are never let off the lead because I'm a responsible dog owner.

I agreed to look after a 2yr old setter a while ago in an emergency. I was so worried about letting her off the lead (largely because of all the anger displayed on MN) that I had a very stressed and agitated dog on my hands for 2 days before researching online for good local places to allow her to run.

Turns out it's not responsible to never let dogs off the lead.

trythisforsize · 03/11/2023 22:45

It’s the sheer number of dogs that are about now. I’m sure 30 years ago much fewer people had dogs. Now every other house has a dog.

The dog population has increased by 3.5 million since 2019 and is around 12.5 million.

Before that it was a steady 8/9 million for 12 years.

There has been an explosion.

That's terrifying. If you live in a building with shared lifts, probably your neighbour isn't allowed the dogs in the terms of their tenancy / leasehold agreement anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't get in the lift with them. Just make an excuse that dogs make you sneeze or even just say you're scared of dogs.

My neighbour's dog is tiny but it's got issues and leaps to bite people. No way I'm sharing the lift with it.

What gets me the most about these ASB tenants getting dogs in breach of the rules is that they're causing a nightmare for anyone who needs a guide dog.

Daisymae55 · 03/11/2023 22:51

I live on a tightly packed estate. Everyone has their dogs running off leads outside the front of their houses. In the past month I’ve had dogs charge at my toddler while walking to a play area around the corner from us and while trying to get her in the car.

I love dogs but I completely agree with OP
