The world has tried men in charge and look what they have done

AIBU... if the world was run by women it would not be in this fucking mess. Children’s and women’s lives would be worth more than land or grievances. Young men would not be groomed for war and aggression. What the hell are men doing to this earth?

This came up today at work. Just Maggie and that was retaliation no?

Eaglemom · 02/11/2023 23:11

we need authentic women that can get into power without having to prove their male credentials.

I think women would have fucked it up just as thoroughly. It's naïve to think it's all down to the sex of who is in charge. Women aren't some kind of perfect angel.

divinededacende · 02/11/2023 23:17

Full disclosure; I'm a man. But I've also thought the same at times. We're getting better (slowly) but we're still the product of a world that tells us we're the masters of the universe and it'll be a few generations yet before the elite of the world aren't a bunch of dick-swinging morons.

I do think there's a part of it that goes beyond gender though. Of the comparatively fewer examples of female world leaders, there have been some terrible examples there too. I think the issue is with the with the personality types that tend to seek power. Isn't there a saying about those who desire power are usually the least suited or something similar?

What we really need is a world with much better, more representative systems and a lot more accountability but that's a whoooole other discussion.

gegs73 · 02/11/2023 23:18

SoupDragon I tend to agree. Men have made a huge mess of it, but I do think if the boot was on the other foot women would end up doing much the same. Has anyone read ‘The Power’?

Boomboom22 · 02/11/2023 23:20

Generally I'd agree but NZ didn't go well. Or Liz!

No basis for this belief. As for more respect for women and children, I don't believe that either, I've had female bosses be incredibly prejudicial and inflexible as regards my maternity rights. I've never had the same problems under a man. We've seen Nicola Sturgeon supporting male rapists in female prisons. We've seen Teresa May assert she'd happily push a nuclear button if she had to. We've seen the introduction of super brothels with an associated increase in under-age sex trafficking in Germany whilst Angela Merkel was PM.

It just doesn't work that way. You don't necessarily get better government if the person in charge is a woman, anymore than you do if the person is a different ethnicity etc. People are people.

I fact, my personal view is most women in power tend to bend over backwards trying to be manly i and are liable to overplay their hands in order to prove themselves.

Queen Elizabeth the 1st might be an exception.

smilesup · 02/11/2023 23:28

We need majority of decision makers and people in places of influence to be women or at least 50%
Globally most influential people proportionately are men. Not the odd token PM. In the last 100 years we had 14 years of women. PMs and they were heading a sea of men. Media is male dominated, films/TV/theatre is still hugely majority men. Education, the stats on men in teaching likely to be heads compared to the proportion of women is shocking.
Women aren perfect but if the men all fucked off for a bit we would sort it.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/11/2023 23:34

Yeah, we definitely need the likes of Truss/Braverman/Patel in the chair. Jesus wept.

Boomboom22 · 02/11/2023 23:41

I def know more women than men who say having kids was a choice so deal with it. And men are mostly parents too. So I'm not really convinced. More that anyone who wants power shouldn't have it so the problems would be similar.
Do like the Rick and morty feminist world though, I am here if you need to talk.

Toloveandtowork · 02/11/2023 23:47

I don't think we can say what it would be like if women had 'the power' because women are so dominated by the men in power that we can't tell.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/11/2023 23:34

What about the likes of Hancock, Rees Mogg, Johnson, Cummings, Sunak, Raab, Hunt, and Gove?
I don't see those men doing a particularly stella job either, but no one extrapolates that to men shouldn't be allowed to be leaders anymore because those few are shit.
I can name a lot more male politicians who have been involved in scandals and corruption than female ones.

HappiDaze · 02/11/2023 23:50

Also I am finding that male teachers who were probably not that popular or good looking at school do like to pick on the pretty more popular girls more than they should.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/11/2023 23:53

So can I @reesewithoutaspoon , but that's more because I (and everybody else) can name a lot more male politicians full stop.

reesewithoutaspoon · 02/11/2023 23:55

Very few women in power truly have power though. they are operating in a mans world where they often are too busy trying to out man the men
The few times women have had absolute power have been under monarchies as queens and they usually do pretty well.

The point is the women do not do a better job by default of their sex. That's based on some idea of women being nicer. Fairer, less prone to corruption.

I went to a girls school with female based hierarchies, where mean girl bullying shite drove some girls to contemplating suicide. One girl I know nearly ended up dead.

So I know this 'the world would be better with women in charge' rhetoric is a total untruth.

ACGTHelixA · 02/11/2023 23:59

it would be intriguing to see a parallel universe where women ruled

This wasn't the best thought out thread..

MiddleagedBeachbum · 03/11/2023 00:08

1000 percent agree!!!!

TempestTost · 03/11/2023 00:55

Looking at all female and female dominated institutions, I can't say I agree.

My daughter is about to change schools due to horrible bullying from other girls. The management in my workplace is toxic because of several female personalities. Not unique situations.

Women might fuck it up differently but t would still be fucked up.

I think you are absolutely right and this is often something we discuss at home - the issue is that the type of people who would seek to have that power are probably exactly the sort of people you don't want having it. It attracts people that are driven by/motivated by status and/or power for themselves - it's highly likely to attract narcissists and sociopaths at worst, at best the type A personalities, who are ultra competitive, egocentric and can be hostile and aggressive. Not really altruistic people who want the best thing for others/the country/the world as a whole.

The whole system is screwed basically. And don't get me started on the economy and how that is completely fixed against about 99% of the population.

Not sure there is an answer to it though. How do you make personality types that aren't driven by power and status, do a job that offers power and status, and is very very difficult and that you are likely to be constantly criticised for and told you have got it wrong. Any takers?

mjf981 · 03/11/2023 04:41

I work with mostly woman and it can be a nightmare. Back stabbing, bitchiness, sulky. The best workplaces have been about 50:50 male: female, so I'd prefer this. Imagine the drama with all women at the top!

WandaWonder · 03/11/2023 05:03

I presume they would be perfect as every women is, unless you are a MIL, mother, SIL, cousin, sister, a friend of your child, a female teacher, politician etc.
