To think this cafe was being ridiculous

Fuckeditup1 · 01/11/2023 17:11

I went to a cafe and it just sold hot chocolates and other chocolatey things like biscuits and chocolate bars.
One of their hot chocolates came with a few individual chocolates.
but I wanted a different hot chocolate along with their individual chocolates and asked how much it would be but They refused.
they would only sell the chocolates with that particular hot chocolate.
there was no other way to buy individual chocolates and they looked really fancy.

Maybe they've accounted for it in their stock ordering and allocating, e.g., they have enough ingredients to make xx number of hot chocolates so have ordered xx amount of chocolates to match. If they then sold a set of chocolates with a different drink they'd potentially run out of chocolates for the drink they actually come with.

Iam4eels · 01/11/2023 17:15

To answer your question though, YABU. If you wanted the chocolates then you should have gotten the drink they came with.

PhantomUnicorn · 01/11/2023 17:16

Why are you being a pain in the ass asking for something different other than what they have on offer?

They're not obliged to accommodate some annoying customer who wants to play mix and match with the products.

I think this is the definition of a first world problem, OP. We can't always have everything the way we want.

WhateverMate · 01/11/2023 17:18

Maybe it's a stock thing? If they've advertised them with a certain drink, they'll have to save them for those who buy it?

TheOneWhereWeDontGiveAPhuck · 01/11/2023 17:19

Yeah I think they are being ridiculous, but I genuinely couldn't imagine posting something like this for opinions.

ManateeFair · 01/11/2023 17:19

I agree it seems weird on the face of it, but if the chocolates are usually only supplied with that particular drink, there's a good chance that they aren't listed on the till as a separate stock item and that the staff therefore have no actual means of pulling up a price and putting them through as sold.

This is particularly likely to be the case if the cafe was part of a chain, like Hotel Chocolat or somewhere like that, or at least is a larger business than just a cafe (eg somewhere that also has a chocolate/patisserie shop/mail order service).

So yeah, mildly irritating but probably more annoying for the staff than the customer to be honest and I can't imagine giving that much of a toss about it, in all honesty. They're not obliged to let you have everything you want.

BoohooWoohoo · 01/11/2023 17:19

It's probably because they don't want to run out of the individual chocolates and they order a matching amount of hot chocolate and individual chocolates. Only way to get around it is to buy bother hot chocolates and give away the drink Yabu you don't want.

Zebedee55 · 01/11/2023 17:21

First world problem.🙄

Caerulea · 01/11/2023 17:22

With my industry hat on - yes it looks unreasonable if I'm honest. However, it could be that they are asked this often & have decided a blanket approach of saying no as it messes with the stock. There could be other reasons to do with margins.

It might also depend on how you asked (and I'm not saying this is the case!) but I'm far less likely to be helpful to customers who are entitled or rude.

I'm curious what the hot chocolates were and the prices?

TheOneWhereWeDontGiveAPhuck · 01/11/2023 17:22

YABU to say chocolate thay many times that I had to go straight for a Wispa and haven't had my dinner yet 😭😭

Jewelspun · 01/11/2023 17:23

It sounds like a promotion.

You wanted to chop and change and they said no.

Move on.

MidnightOnceMore · 01/11/2023 17:27

Without further info it sounds an illogical response from the cafe as they reduced their sales, but it may be a stock issue e.g. a promotion on something about to go out of date.

NewPapaGuinea · 01/11/2023 17:32

Intrigued to what the difference between the hot chocolates were?

Squirrelsbite · 01/11/2023 17:36

You should have bought the drink the chocs came with
ho to a supermarket and buy some ‘fancy’ chocs if your that bothered

DominiqueBernard · 01/11/2023 17:41

Seems odd but if you really wanted the chocolates you could have bought the accompanying drink.

Here OP have a nice Biscuit instead of those fancy chocs.

lanthanum · 01/11/2023 17:49

It could just be a case of the member of staff serving you not knowing whether it would be okay with the manager.

ginasevern · 01/11/2023 17:53

Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate.

Elvis1956 · 01/11/2023 17:54

I hate it when people order food/drinks and say things like can I have bacon instead of sausage and mash instead of chips and ...and...one or two things ok...But when you want a bespoke meal rather than what's on the menu...go home

Soontobe60 · 01/11/2023 17:55

Im surprised they wouldnt change the drink - but I’m also surprised there are different types of hot chocolate!

If there’s a Tim Hortons near you, their white hot chocolate is so nice!

Even Costa do different hot chocolates. Their Terry's chocolate orange comes with a mini one. So it sounds similar to that.
The chocolates are provided by the chocolate supplier as part of the promotion.

LakeTiticaca · 01/11/2023 18:00

Just take the other coffee so you can have the chocs. How difficult can it be?
