To think this cafe was being ridiculous

Fuckeditup1 · 01/11/2023 17:11

I went to a cafe and it just sold hot chocolates and other chocolatey things like biscuits and chocolate bars.
One of their hot chocolates came with a few individual chocolates.
but I wanted a different hot chocolate along with their individual chocolates and asked how much it would be but They refused.
they would only sell the chocolates with that particular hot chocolate.
there was no other way to buy individual chocolates and they looked really fancy.

I hate places like this. It’s so unfriendly and unwelcoming to refuse something you clearly have in stock and that a paying customer wants and is offering to pay for. I worked in hospitality for years and if a customer asks for something you really really can’t do, you at least try to offer them some kind of alternative. That kind of customer service won’t get much repeat custom.

Duckskitbank · 01/11/2023 19:30

YANBU I can’t bear places that are so inflexible.

zelda10 · 01/11/2023 19:32

Of course you’re not being unreasonable. What ridiculous comments. It’s some chocolates and a drink, I can think of no logical reason for the refusal whatsoever.

Mariposista · 01/11/2023 19:32

So you couldn't have a coffee and a chocolate? That's my favourite combination! Not a fan of HC.

Americans all agree on, our food service does its best to make customers not want to be there.

Is that why so many American menus have the phrase 'No substitutions' prominently displayed?

I go to the US every month and eat out 4 times at least, different venues every time. I have never seen that on a menu and have only ever had a change catered for....

Not sure where you are going but it's not where I am going 😂

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 19:38

The pub in the village I used to live in had a sign outside..."If you have food allergies, don't eat here".
Since they only served awful cheap burgers, it wasn't a problem.

Businesses have every right to operate how they want.

You sound rather "precious" OP.

Precious??? for asking for what she wanted.

Honestly... I swear some posters just see what others have posted at the beginning of a thread and just jump on a bandwagon without thinking. Adding an extra boot into the kicking as it were.

Of course she wasn't precious, she just wanted what she wanted. Not difficult in the circumstances, it's a bloody drink! The cafe should have just accommodated this.

curtaintwitcher78 · 01/11/2023 19:42

Say chocolate one more time

Viviennemary · 01/11/2023 19:48

Well you can ask but they are not obliged to agree to yqour request. Qq

This would really piss me off, how difficult could it possibly be to make another drink and throw a couple of chocolates on there, I doubt there are many people asking for a different drink so it's hardly a hardship. I wouldn't bother with them again!

The whole point of promotions like this is to make customers buy things that aren't selling well, or that the cafe has a surplus of.

So, in this case they probably have loads of (say) orange hot chocolate for some reason, and are therefore giving away free chocolates to everyone who buys orange hot chocolate as way of getting rid of it.

Giving the chocolates away to someone buying an already popular hot chocolate (say, white chocolate) defeats the whole point.

Or provide what the customer wants and stay in business. It's the one thing that Americans all agree on, our food service does its best to make customers not want to be there.

As I said one of two changes, but I was in Wetherspoons (a cheap and cheerful pub chain that specialises in cheap drinks and cheap mass production food, which is often cooked from frozen). The guy in front wanted this changed, the chips from that plate put with another meal, the egg scrambled not fried, this exchanged, that exchanged...you get the picture. In the Italian restaurant around the corner that's more acceptable, but this was just too much and I've seen it done too often in similar places.

To top it off he'd got most of it wrong and sat there and let his family whinge and be rude at the young waitress to an extent that she was near tears and I had to step in as a customer and tell them to shut up and it was his fault (and theirs) that the food wasn't right.

If a menu says egg and chips...It's bloody egg and chips not egg and mash!😁

HeddaGarbled · 01/11/2023 20:00

If it wasn't selling well.....there's their answer right there

Businesses sometimes make mistakes. What are they meant to do? Throw it away? Of course they’re going to try to promote that particular product.

I expect they’ll go bust soon anyway, the poor sods.

Bunda · 01/11/2023 20:03

I'd probably be annoyed for a few mins but never enough to post about it so for that YABU

MeMySonAnd1 · 01/11/2023 20:10

This reminded me of the time when we had a party at Pizza Express and one of the kids was allergic to dairy. We asked them not to put cheese on the pizza.

A few minutes later we had the manager come to us a bit embarrassed to let us know they couldn’t cater for that allergy as the pizzas came ready made in boxes and they just popped them in the oven.

Maybe what you ordered came as part of a package/group so they couldn’t give you different chocolates with the hot chocolate you wanted.

This is classic AI

Well this is rubbish as you literally can see the pizzas being made at pizza express

Citrusandginger · 01/11/2023 20:43

Was going to say that Ainsley

FrangipaniBlue · 01/11/2023 21:09

YABVU this is Mumsnet...... nobody needs hot chocolate AND fancy chocolates.

Far too much sugar.

Hmm
VanityDiesHard · 01/11/2023 21:29

YANBU. For all the people saying 'first world problems' get a grip! Is there a rule that we only have to post important stuff? While I agree with the PP who say it is probably a stock issue, I have to say I find that kind of inflexibility highly irritating. Same with bars (back when I used to drink) that would only offer one size of wine glass, instead of the standards of 125, 175, and 250. It is occasions like those where I feel that the much abused saying 'the customer is always right' is actually valid.

RicherThanYews · 01/11/2023 21:46

Hope it wasn't Hotel Chocolat, the staff in my Cardiff branch are lovely and always give me 15% discount.

Not that I go often.

Thank you for your detailed and highly patronising explanation of "stock issues"

I don't need any of that explaining to me like I am a five year old.

I understand business well enough, that for the sake of a bloody hot chocolate and a happy customer they could have just changed one drink. I doubt they had a queue of people demanding "say, white chocolate" with the orange chocolate chocolates.

Ridiculous stance to take.

EmmKay13 · 01/11/2023 23:16

I can match that.

Popped into an independent cafe / deli place last year, about 45 mins before it closed. We wanted two sandwiches to take away.

DP asked for whatever it was he wanted and as I saw nothing on the menu that was vegan I asked for a salad sandwich.

Owner said they didn't serve salad sandwiches. I said, "But you do cheese salad sandwiches, if I pay the price for one of them can you make it and just leave the cheese out, please?" A bit like when your order in a restaurant and ask them to leave the peas off etc..

She repeated that they don't sell salad sandwiches. If Jeremy Beadle was still alive, I would have been convinced he was about to jump out, guffawing.

We ended up going to Subway as the owner wouldn't budge. 😅 It was a mad exchange / fuzzy logic.

This is an outright scandal and what are the government doing about these situations? NOTHING

I suggest you write to your MP.
